Distracted driving diverts a driver’s attention away 

from driving safely. 

Types of distractions include texting, using a navigation 

system, using a cell phone, adjusting a MP3 player/radio. 

Text messaging requires visual and cognitive attention 

from the driver, as a result, it is the most concerning 

distraction. The following information may help remind 

residents on the importance of driving safely: 

• On any daytime instant across America, approximately 

660,000 drivers are using cell phones or manipulating 

electronic devices while driving, a number that has held 

steady since 2010. 

• Engaging in visual/manual subtasks (such as reaching 

for a phone, dialing and texting) associated with the use of 

cellphones and other portable devices increases the risk 

of getting into a crash by 3 times. 

• 11% of all drivers under the age of 20 involved in fatal

age group has the largest proportion of drivers who were distracted. 

• Sending or receiving a text takes a driver’s eyes from the road for 

an average of 4.6 seconds, the equivalent, at 55 mph of driving the 

length of an entire football field, blind.

corner. Please avoid becoming a distracted driver, help keep all our

NOTICE REGARDING TRASHCANS 

During recent visits to our community, the most common deed 

restriction violation we find is Owners leaving their trashcans out in 

public view. Trashcans should be placed in view only after 7 PM 

the evening prior to the scheduled pick up day. The cans should 

be removed and stored out of view the same day following pick 

up. The volume of letters sent regarding this issue continues to 

be an increasing expense for Copper Grove Owners Association. 

All expenses incurred, including postage to mail out fines, weigh 

seriously on the assessment paid by each homeowner. We request 

your compliance to help keep cost to a minimum and to keep our 

community as attractive as possible.

On the following holidays, our garbage is not collected and it will not 

be collected until the next designated pick up date. In other words, 

trash will NOT be picked up the day after a holiday.

HOW DO WE LOOK? 

Curb appeal has a big impact on your property value, even if your 

home is not for sale. Buyers evaluate the neighborhood, not just 

one house. Stand back from your house and take a close look to 

see if it needs a mini-makeover. Think about security as well. Has 

your shrubbery become overgrown, covering windows or blocking 

the sidewalk? Do low-hanging limbs obscure the front? Does the 

lawn have brown areas or weeds? Is the siding mildewed or paint 

peeling? You may want to ask a friend’s opinion; it is easy to overlook 

things we see everyday. Make plans now to spruce up. 

Cars that are parked in the street are also a turn-off to buyers. Make 

the extra effort to keep cars in the driveway. It looks better and is 

safer for your neighbors and your car.

HOUSTON AREA EVENTS AND ROAD TRIPS 

June 4 th - Houston Fajita Festival - The Houston Fajita Festival 2016 

is a celebration of Mexican culture, food, drinks and entertainment. 

Come hungry with family and friends to enjoy a day filled with a 

variety of delicious fajita choices! Texas cookers and grill masters 

will have everything from beef to seafood. Enjoy live art at the “Mural 

wall,” play with the kids in the “Playground” or relax with the cooling 

misters in the “Chill Zone.” There will be live entertainment for all to 

enjoy including midget wrestling, local bands, DJ’s, Baile folklorico, 

live artist painting, costume characters, interactive games for prizes 

and delicious carnival treats including Grandmas Boys Lemonade.

Orleans to Aspen draws culinary masters and wine experts from 

around the world. An epicurean extravaganza with more than 10,000 

participants each year, Wine & Food Week’s gastronomic grandeur

legendary wine producers and culinary personalities. A myriad of 

education classes, chef demonstrations, cookbook author events

June 10 th & July 8 th - Summer Nights - The City of Katy hosts Katy 

Summer Nights on the evening of the second Friday of June

which will culminate with the annual Bayou Bowl high school all-star

- The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean 

Association Football (CONCACAF) presents the 2016 Copa America 

soccer championship, which will be held in Houston and nine other 

U.S. cities in June 2016. This marks the first time the event has 

been staged outside South America and will be the most prestigious 

soccer tournament hosted in the U.S. since the World Cup in 1994.

MENTOR PROGRAM 

The CFISD Mentor Program is a cooperative effort of volunteers 

from businesses, faith-based and/or non-profit organizations, the 

community and the school district designed to encourage students 

(elementary through high school) to finish school and focus on 

future education and career goals. A mentor is a suitable role 

model committed to helping a student with his/her academic and 

social development. Mentors meet with students one-on-one for 

approximately 30 minutes each week. Currently, over 600 mentors 

are matched with students. 

To become a mentor you must attend a training session (REGISTER), 

complete a global volunteer/mentor application and consent to 

a criminal history record check . Training Sessions - Registration is 

REQUIRED. The next session will be Wednesday, June 22nd from 

9-10 AM. 

More training sessions will be added throughout the year. If you 

would like to schedule mentor training at your place of business, 

please contact the Community Engagement department, Leslie 

Francis , Director of Marketing and Business Relations at 281-894-

once you have been approved as a mentor (this is the system that

TWO CFISD NURSES MAKE TOP 10 IN 

HOUSTON, 19 RANK IN TOP 150 

The CFISD community demonstrated how much they love school 

nurses by submitting an overwhelming number of nominations 

during the month of March to the Houston Chronicle’s Salute to 

Nurses program. 

As a result, two CFISD nurses made the Houston Chronicle’s Top 10 

best nurses in Houston, while 19 were named to the Top 150 list. The 

top 150 nurses, selected by a panel of educators and leaders in the 

industry, were honored at the annual Salute to Nurses luncheon on 

May 5th to kickoff National Nurses Week, May 6th-12th, celebrating 

the theme “Culture of Safety: It starts with YOU!” According to the 

Chronicle, the annual Salute to Nurses program mobilizes area 

hospitals, clinics, schools and patients eager to nominate Houston’s 

best nurses. The CFISD community did not hold back, accounting 

for nearly 200 of the approximate 1,000 overall nominations that the 

Chronicle received. 

Spillane Middle School nurse Becky Cushen and Cypress Lakes 

High School nurse Janet Jewitt were selected by the expert panel of 

judges as Top 10 recipients in Houston for their selfless service and 

outstanding care they provide to students.

eight truckloads of cleaning supplies for Cy-Hope. 


CFISD COMMUNITY 

SUPPORTS FLOOD VICTIMS 

When floodwater ravaged homes throughout Cypress-Fairbanks ISD 

in April, a swift and thorough response from the community helped 

put thousands of residents on the path to recovery. After intense 

storms dumped record amounts of rain in northwest Harris County, 

local nonprofit Cy-Hope mobilized a communitywide effort to collect 

gift cards, cleaning supplies and other household items. Just two 

days after posting the announcement on its Facebook page , Cy- 

Hope had collected more than 75 truckloads of cleaning supplies 

and approximately $12,000 in gift cards at Foundry United Methodist 

Church for flood victims. The Foundry began sending out work crews 

that visited damaged houses throughout the week, cleaning out 

houses and distributing supplies to families in affected areas. The 

following campuses joined in the Cy-Hope effort by collecting gift cards 

and supplies from their school communities: Aragon Middle School 

students and staff donated cleaning supplies and volunteered to help 

families clean up homes damaged by the flood; Salyards Middle School 

collected more than $5,200 in gift cards and eight truckloads of cleaning 

supplies; Warner Elementary School, along with Cypress Ranch High 

School National Honor Society students, collected cleaning supplies 

and helped a Warner family that lost its home to a lightning strike fire 

by collecting clothing and gift cards; Sampson Elementary School 

collected seven truckloads of cleaning supplies and nonperishable 

food as well as $2,500 in gift cards; Anthony Middle School filled a 

pickup truck with cleaning supplies and provided gift cards; Francone 

Elementary School collected approximately 700 cleaning supplies; 

Holmsley Elementary School donated four truckloads of laundry, 

cleaning supplies, toiletries, baby formula and diapers; Goodson 

Middle School collected $1,000 worth of gift cards, cleaning supplies 

and bottled water during donation drive. The school also distributed 

water and supplies to 27 families during that week and Jersey Village 

High School baseball players helped Jersey Village families clean out 

their homes during Cy-Hope’s outreach efforts. Food and supply drives 

were also scheduled throughout the week by several other campuses, 

including Cypress Lakes and Cypress Falls high schools and Emmott, 

Kirk, Wilson and Woodard elementary schools.

We give glory to God for our victories at the TAPPS State Vocal Music 

Championships, which took place on April 22 nd in Killeen, Texas. The 

Solo & Small Ensemble portion of the contest was previously held at 

Houston Baptist University on March 29 th . The points accumulated 

from both components of the competition were combined for an 

overall score towards the State Championship. As a team, RCS

KINDERGARTEN BEDTIME STORIES 

CCS welcomed current and incoming kindergarten families to 

listen to the elementary principal and kindergarten teachers read a 

variety of entertaining children’s books. Students were once again 

mesmerized by captivating characters. This year, they met a funny 

old grandpa, a llama in red pajamas, a sparkly rainbow fish, a mouse 

who goes to school and a beautiful full moon. The books they read

GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL 

As the school year comes to a close, Copper Creek Corners Girl 

Scouts are busier than ever! Girls and their “Guys”… dads, stepdads, 

grandfathers, uncles and family friends… all had a terrific time at our 

bowling event. You wouldn’t believe the amount of talent and style, on 

display. We had the “guys” coaching and encouraging the girls and 

the girls showing off their skills and offering pointers to the “guys.” The 

action was fast and furious as balls of all colors rolled down the lanes 

and we did seem to be keeping the pinsetters busy! There was a lot 

of hugging, high-fiving and jumping up and down going on! 

Our Bridging Event celebrated troops and girls moving from one 

Girl Scout level to the next. Many of our bridging troops have been 

teaching younger Girl Scouts and learning from older ones as they 

work on earning a bridging patch. This doesn’t just happen when a 

troop is bridging. Junior Girl Scout troop 16462 shared a meeting 

with their “sister” Brownie Troop 16016. They had fun making 

jewelry, singing silly camp songs and sharing their experiences of 

being a Girl Scout. Julie M., of troop 16462 also represented the 

council Robotics group with a presentation at the GSSJC Annual 

Council. Junior Girl Scout troop 16468 invited Daisy and Brownie Girl 

Scouts to participate in a “Staying Healthy” workshop. The workshop 

included a flag ceremony, informational presentation, a dance 

workshop and a performance session. Daisy Girl Scout troop 113086 

held their “end of year” party at Painting with a Twist… they used 

some of their cookie money for the party and painted hedgehogs. A 

hedgehog was the “mascot” for this year’s Cookie Sale. Fifteen area 

girls showed up for the start of the new Girl Scout soccer program. 

The girls are working hard, honing their skills and looking forward to 

competing with other Girl Scout soccer groups. 

Copper Creek Meadows Community has also had girls involved with 

service projects. Junior Girl Scout troop 16451 presented a “Buddy 

Bench” to Lowery Elementary and also made a video to go along with 

it. This was a Bronze award project. Another Bronze award project 

(by Junior Girl Scout troop 16399) involved creating Bed Time Bags 

for the Houston SPCA. The bags, which contain a new blanket, toy 

and treat, are given to the “parents” of newly adopted pets. The girls 

have also been busy collecting items for the SPCA wish list. Alyssa 

and Kenley from Girl Scout Cadette troop 14298 have created an 

organization called “Fuzzy Friends Care,” collecting new stuffed 

animals. The girls attach “words of wisdom” to each stuffed animal 

and donate the toys to the Shriners Hospital for Children. They want 

to give every child entering the hospital a fuzzy friend to hold and to 

keep them company in their time of need. 

Senior Girl Scout troop 16162 is looking out for the summer needs of 

children who depend on the school breakfast and lunch program. As 

part of their “Sow What” Journey, they are collecting nonperishable 

and easy to eat foods for the Cy-Hope Backpack program. Needy 

children are given backpacks with food to take home over the 

weekend and in the summer when the school programs do not 

operate. During the summer, the program is funded entirely by 

community donations. Troop 113035 sprang into action after the 

recent flooding in our area. In conjunction with Cy-Fair Helping 

Hands, they helped to sew toiletry bags and used some of the money 

they earned in the Cookie Sale to purchase toiletries to fill the bags. 

The bags were then distributed to those displaced by the flooding.

peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made. 

Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. 

Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life 

skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by 

the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which 

includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops 

(boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls 

from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly. Many of our units 

are supported by the local Elementary Schools including: Birkes, 

Copeland, Duryea, Fiest, Hemmingway, Holmsley, Horne, Jowell, 

Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Postma, Robinson, Sheridan, Tipps, Walker

BOY SCOUT TROOP 61 

Young men between the ages of 11-18 are encouraged to visit Boy 

Scout Troop 61 at 7:00 PM Wednesday nights at Peace Community 

Church, 5151 Addicks Satsuma Road, Houston, Texas, 77084. They 

will get a hands-on experience of what Scouting has to offer and 

have the opportunity to visit with the Scouts and their adult leaders to 

learn more about the things the troop has done during meetings and 

activities. Scouting activities include camping, fishing, archery, rifle/ 

shotgun shooting, hiking, first aid, wilderness survival, community 

service, citizenship, swimming, leadership, white-water rafting and 

much more. Troop 61 camps each month and has a group that goes 

to High Adventure Camp and to Merit Badge Camps each summer.

Boy Scouts of America Troop 573 is chartered through Christ the Redeemer 

Catholic Church and meets every Wednesday at 7:30 PM in the Church 

Community Center at 11507 Huffmeister Rd. Guests are always welcome 

to visit and attend our Troop Meetings. The Boy Scouts of America is one of 

the nation’s largest and most prominent values-based youth development 

organizations. The BSA provides a program for young people that builds

The cost per camp per child is $120. You may pay $60 now and the

have it filled out before you arrive, saving yourself time! 

Before each camp session begins, you will hear from your child’s 

teacher so you can learn more about the camp and she will answer

AMERICAN ROBOTICS ACADEMY

Friday from 10 AM to 3 PM. On Friday afternoon we will have a 

family and friends celebration reception so the children can display 

their art and share their experiences in the workshops while we enjoy 

light refreshments. The cost for this four-day art camp is just $45 per 

child and includes all activities, lunch and a t-shirt (while supplies 

last.) A limited number of scholarships are available. Kids who have 

completed Kindergarten (and are age six by September 1, 2016) 

through 5 th grade are invited to come. Registration begins May 1 st and

Lifepath Church is now enrolling for Club T3, our After-School 

Program for grades K-5 th . Club T3 will be every Mon-Fri, 4-6 PM, 

following the CyFair School District Calendar. This is a Faith based 

program designed to Train, Teach and Tutor students with academic 

enrichment opportunities that include tutoring, daily devotions, 

reading clubs, running, b-ball, dance, music, gardening, providing

Epiphany Bingo has been conducting bingo games on the west side 

since February 14, 1986. Epiphany conducts their bingo games 

every Friday night except holidays. THERE IS NO SMOKING 

ALLOWED DURING ALL BINGO GAMES. They have a jackpot 

game of $750. Maximum prize giveaways of $2,500, allowed by 

law, are given away every Bingo Night! They have security, lighted 

parking, big screen color monitor, computerized bingo equipment, 

snack bar and large cash prizes. 

Profits are used for charitable outreach programs, building 

expansion, and payment towards debt. Epiphany Catholic Church 

conducts its bingo games at the Church Community Center, 1530 

Norwalk Dr. (between Fry and Mason Roads, south of I-10 behind 

Nottingham Subdivision) off Highland Knolls every Friday night. 

Early bird games begin at 7:30 PM and regular games at 8:00 PM.
