D34 replaces Nicholson with interim superintendent team

Following the resignation
of District 34 superintendent
Dr. Michael
Nicholson, the Board of
Education approved contracts
with two former superintendents
— Dr. Griff
Powell and Dr. Patricia
Wernet — to serve as interim
superintendents for
the 2016-17 school year
during their monthly meeting
on Tuesday, May 31.
“We were fortunate to
find two highly experienced
educational leaders
who not only share District
34’s values, they also
share a common passion
for putting student learning
at the center of their
efforts,” Board of Education
President Cathe Russe
said.
Powell has served as superintendent
in five school
districts during his 35-year
education career, including
Niles Township District
219 and West Chicago
District 94.
Wernet has served as superintendent
in two school
districts during her 20-year
education career, including
Lisle District 202 and
Berwyn District 100.
Since both are retired,
each is limited to a maximum
number of workdays
per school year by the Illinois
Teachers’ Retirement
System. Each will
be available starting July
1 and both will be paid
$1,000 for each day they
work. Neither will receive
any benefits.

leadership throughout the
entire school year,” Russe
said.
The Board began the
process of filling the superintendent
vacancy by
reaching out to educational
leaders who have intimate
knowledge of D34, resulting
in a list of more than 20
potential candidates. Following
an initial screening
to determine availability
and fit, eight candidates
were interviewed. The full
Board of Education met
with three finalist candidates
and selected Powell

abilities and varied experiences

Powell and Wernet will
maintain the programs and
structures that are currently
in place and help with
the transition to a new superintendent.
The Board of Education
will initiate a superintendent
search this fall with
input from staff, parents,
community members and
other stakeholders.
Nicholson, who still had
one year remaining on his
contract, resigned as part
of a mutual agreement between
him and the Board
of Education. Although
his resignation is effective
June 30, he signed a
six-month contract with
the district to serve as the
executive director of assessment
analytics and
instructional support. He
will maintain his current
salary, earning $108,978
over the six-month period,
and maintain some of his
current benefits, including
health insurance. In his
new role, he will work on
an independent basis offsite
on projects that move
the strategic plan forward.
