Diversity, passion strengths of GBS’ Class of 2016
Chris Pullam, Editor
In a way, first-year
Glenbrook South Principal
Lauren Fagel spent more
than two decades writing
her commencement address.
Between graduating
from Glenbrook North in
1990 and becoming the
GBS principal in 2015-
2016, she spent more than
two decades away from
District 225. She used the
lessons she learned during
that journey as her final
piece of advice to her first
senior class.
“I’ll speak on the concept
of home and what
it means to feel at home
and be at home and leave
home,” Fagel said prior to
the Class of 2016’s graduation
ceremony on Sunday,
June 5, at Rosemont
Theatre. “For me, coming
back to GBS is like coming
home even though it
isn’t the same building I attended
as a student. There
is still that sense of home
and familiarity, so I started
thinking about this year
and how the students and
this graduating class of seniors
went out of their way
to make me feel at home.
Now they’re the ones leaving
home, so I want to focus
on the idea of what that
means and how that feels.”
Fagel spent most of her
first year, which she described
as both exhilarating
and exhausting, building
relationships within D225
and the community. But
she also bonded with GBS
students and cited that interaction
as the main reason
she coveted the position.
Many of those students,
such as student council
president and Harvardbound
graduate Kevin
Gordon, thrived in their
“home” over the past four
years.
Gordon served as class
president his freshman,
sophomore and junior
year before becoming the
president of the entire student
body. He was also the
congressional debate captain
and member of the
Interact Club. During his
four years at GBS, Gordon
helped arrange the
Gym Jam, advertise the
Canned Food Drive and
build class floats for the
homecoming parade.
“Sometimes it feels like
it was all highlights,” Gordon
said. “But the biggest
ones for me were in debate.
State was always fun.
Last year for debate I was
a finalist. Then a lot of the
other [highlights] revolved
around student council.”
Gordon plans to study
history and economics at
Harvard and hopes to work
in public policy, a field that
will allow him to have a
large impact on society.
Classmate Clayton Nimz
will attend the University
of Alabama to study athletic
training. Nimz served
as class treasurer his freshman,
sophomore and junior
year before becoming
the student body treasurer
in 2015-2016. He was also
a varsity gymnast.
Nimz credits GBS for
nurturing his diverse interests.
“I’d say our class was
very involved,” Nimz said.
“GBS does a very good job
of finding everyone a passion
they can get into and
giving everyone options to
explore those passions.”
Senior class representative
Kate Maki nurtured
her passion for music while
a student at GBS. She sang
with Scat That, GBS’ vocal
jazz group, and carolled
during the holidays with
Chamber Singers. She also
performed in the Variety
Show all four years.
“Almost every kid I met
at South is passionate about
something even if they
don’t all want to be decked
out in blue and gold and
totally peppy,” Maki said.
“They are all peppy in the
Following the resignation
of District 34 superintendent
Dr. Michael
Nicholson, the Board of
Education approved contracts
with two former superintendents
— Dr. Griff
Powell and Dr. Patricia
Wernet — to serve as interim
superintendents for
the 2016-17 school year
during their monthly meeting
on Tuesday, May 31.
“We were fortunate to
find two highly experienced
educational leaders
who not only share District
34’s values, they also
share a common passion
for putting student learning
at the center of their
efforts,” Board of Education
President Cathe Russe
said.
Powell has served as superintendent
in five school
districts during his 35-year
education career, including
Niles Township District
219 and West Chicago
District 94.
Wernet has served as superintendent
in two school
districts during her 20-year
education career, including
Lisle District 202 and
Berwyn District 100.
Since both are retired,
each is limited to a maximum
number of workdays
per school year by the Illinois
Teachers’ Retirement
System. Each will
be available starting July
1 and both will be paid
$1,000 for each day they
work. Neither will receive
any benefits.
The Board began the
process of filling the superintendent
vacancy by
reaching out to educational
leaders who have intimate
knowledge of D34, resulting
in a list of more than 20
potential candidates. Following
an initial screening
to determine availability
and fit, eight candidates
were interviewed. The full
Nicholson, who still had
one year remaining on his
contract, resigned as part
of a mutual agreement between
him and the Board
of Education. Although
his resignation is effective
June 30, he signed a
six-month contract with
the district to serve as the
executive director of assessment
analytics and
will maintain his current
salary, earning $108,978
and maintain some of his
current benefits, including
THE NORTHBROOK TOWER
Northbrook couple killed
by son in Las Vegas
A Northbrook couple
and their son were found
dead Wednesday, June 1,
in what police believe to
be a double murder-suicide
in Las Vegas.
The bodies of Arthur
Wulf, 69, Jan Morgan-
Wulf, 66, and Aaron Wulf,
36, were discovered after
police received a call of
a domestic disturbance at
10:49 a.m.
When officers arrived
for a welfare check, they
discovered Aaron dead
of an apparent gunshot
wound on a second-floor
landing and the couple deceased
inside an upstairs
bedroom.
The parents had been
stabbed and shot, police
said.
The initial investigation
indicated the son killed his
parents and turned the gun
on himself.
behind the scenes, but the
knowledge and positive
attitude he brings to work
every day translates into
a great experience for our
patients. We are an outstanding
hospital, thanks
to our dedicated employees
like Dan. We are fortunate
to have Dan on our
team.”
Nicknamed “The Legend”
by many of his coworkers,
Niskanen returned
the compliment:
“Every day I get to go to
a place I believe in. In a
way, I am helping our patients
and making lives
better. I love the job. I love
the people. I can’t imagine
working anywhere else.”
But, he added, “I need to
slow down a little bit.”
THE HIGHLAND PARK LANDMARK
Highland Park’s dog
‘leader’ a sight in town
If you drive around
Highland Park much,
you’ve probably noticed
Jeremy Caplan out walking
his canine friends in
an orderly, well-mannered
pack, as many as 12
abreast.
The 29-year-old lifelong
Highland Park resident,
owner of Sawyer’s
Dog House, specializes
in behavioral training
techniques and “constructive
socialization” that
strengthen the bond between
owner and dog and
fortify relationships.
He begins a client relationship
with a “behavior
consultation,” which is
designed to give the owners
of dogs of all ages and
sizes the skills needed to
effectively communicate
with their pet.
“I teach people how to
be present with their dog
and how to express their
confidence and their assertive
energy, which is what
dogs need,” said Caplan,
who is also a certified instructor
in Hatha, a particular
type of yoga.
“What I offer that most
programs don’t is training
amongst other dogs,”
he said, adding that those
walks are a way for dogs
to learn valuable social
skills. “Each dog becomes
a member of the pack,
which allows their K9 instincts
to be fulfilled. This
is a great opportunity for
young dogs to learn how a
pack functions, respecting
other members of the pack
and learning how to walk
with a human leader.
but most people call
me Sunny because
I’m orange like the
adopted younger
siblings, Zonk and
S’maxwell, that I
only barely get along
the grass.
Seniors say goodbye to Loyola at graduation ceremony
Kirsten Keller
Assistant Editor
Saying goodbye was at
the forefront of the conversation
at Loyola Academy’s
2016 graduation ceremony,
as 518 seniors clad
in white suits and dresses
prepared to leave the
school many called home
for the past four years.
Valedictorian Mary
Cormier addressed the
Class of 2016 in the May
28 ceremony at Loyola
University with a speech
that explained how to say
goodbye. She explained
her aversion to goodbyes,
which consequently led
her to consult Google. A
wikiHow tutorial was the
resulting article that provided
a four-step process
on the proper way to bid
adieu.
The first step, said
Cormier, a Glenview resident,
is to recognize when
it’s time to leave.
“We don’t want to leave
the people who mean so
much to us, a place that
has become so comfortable,
but we were never
meant to settle in and
stay,” Cormier advised the
graduates. “Loyola fits us
now like the flooded khakis
I wore for the majority
of my high school career.
It’s time for a new pair.”
She explained that feelings
of doubt about themselves
and the future were
not to be avoided and were
actually catalysts that
would push them forward
and incur exploration and
growth.
The next two steps
Cormier shared advise to
talk about memories and
stay in touch.
“We may not remember
all our classwork, but
what Loyola has instilled
in all of us is the sense of
belonging, the certainty of
being a part of a community.
And we should never
say goodbye to that,”
Cormier said.
The last step — when
it’s time to go, make it
brief and sincere — may
be ill advice, Cormier said.
Sincerity is important, but
brevity is not a must.
“You don’t take the time
when you’re in it to take a
step back and realize how
much it means,” Cormier
told The Lantern. “But in
the last week I’ve realized
that I know I’m going to
miss it.”
Principal Kathryn Baal
told The Lantern she’s
seen the class of 2016
come together to get things
done, including hosting
the first Senior Olympics
and initiating a campaign
to eliminate plastic water
bottles from the school.
“As a class they’re unified,”
Baal said. “They’re
an outgoing group of
young men and women
who have done remarkable
work academically,
but also they’ve really embraced
our mission.”
Andrew Sullivan, the recipient
of the Michael Rebarchak
Memorial Award
that recognizes students
for their quiet yet substantive
contributions to
Loyola, reflected on his
time at the school to The
Lantern.
“I think it’s been a time
of growth for me,” said
Sullivan, of Winnetka.
“Freshman year no one
at Loyola knew our best
selves, but Loyola has cultivated
many opportunities
and experiences for our
growth.”
For Baal, the class of
2016 is one she will miss
as many of the students
have exemplified many
of the characteristics heralded
by Jesuit schools,
including openness to
growth and a commitment
to doing justice.
“Classes have cultures
to them and classes have
an atmosphere about
them,” Baal said. “This is
a class that I’m sad to see
go. They’re a wonderful
group of kids.”
think it’s really cool how
many kids we have that really
love what they’re doing
with the resources at
Glenbrook South.”
The students weren’t
the only ones who enjoyed
2016 at GBS.
Fagel also participated
in the V-Show after Assistant
Principal of Student
Activities Dr. Jim Shellard
found out she could tap
dance.
“I took [tap dancing] for
a long time, so it was kind
of like riding a bike,” Fagel
said. “It was just putting
the shoes back on. It
wasn’t something I had to
learn [for the show], but
it wasn’t something I had
done in front of hundreds
of people in a long time. ...
But the kids made me feel
much more comfortable
performing.”
But 2016 wasn’t only
about fun. Fagel also
praised her staff’s hard
work in overcoming gender
identity challenges, as
well as the Oracle’s willingness
to highlight the
issues.
“One defining feature
[of our senior class] is
overall they’re a really
good group of kids,” Gordon
said. “They’re relatively
open [and] respectful.
They’re a very driven
contingent. ... But the defining
feature is the respect
and kindness they share toward
each other. I’m really
grateful to have been in a
class with so many smart
and kind people.”
“This class was very
welcoming, very spirited,”
Fagel added. “I feel like
they, both as individuals
and a class, made efforts to
create new events and new
traditions, but also honored
past traditions. For
me they will always be my
first senior class here so it
will always be special for
me. They really made me
feel at home. They could
have easily had the attitude
of ‘we had our principal
and this is our last year so
we won’t get to know her
because we’re moving on.’
“But that’s not how I felt
at all.”

There is an entire
subset of humor
dedicated to the
“dad joke.”
They’re the cheesy, rollyour-eyes
jokes that are
often only told in earnest
by a father. Everyone’s
dad jokes differ, but we all
have them.
I’ll take screenshots of
some of the texts my dad
sends me to save them,
and often share them on
social media, because they
make me laugh in a way
only a dad joke can.
They range from “Only
one solution: everybody
Wang Chung tonight!”
that was referencing nothing
else in our conversation
to texting me the
Justin Timberlake “it’s
gonna be May” meme every
April 30. He texts me
French jokes on Bastille
Day, too.
Sometimes, shamefully
more times than not, I don’t
respond. I love my dad,
of course, but seemingly
I’m always “too busy” to
respond. Either I’m working,
I’m driving, or I’m just
doing something else and
don’t send a text back when
I see his name flash across
my lock screen.
My dad doesn’t deserve
this. He’s the same dad
who let me teach him
Nsync choreography when
I was a kid because I had
no siblings to play along
having my dad around like
he always had been was
he missed musicals and
many aren’t as lucky.
GBS students showcase STEM skills in annual showcase
Courtney Jacquin
Assistant Editor
Watch out Silicon Valley,
there’s some competition
coming from Glenview.
Glenbrook South hosted
its second annual STEM
Showcase and Maker Faire
May 25, displaying the
projects and research in
science, technology, engineering
and math of more
than 150 GBS students,
ranging from freshman
through seniors.
“So there are really four
groups of students that are
represented at the Maker
Faire,” Jeff Rylander, instructional
supervisor in
the science department at
GBS, said. “The largest
group is the STEM learning
community, we also
have some of our engineering
students that have
done projects. We also
have science independent
research study and engineering
club.”
The STEM learning
community is a group of
freshman and sophomores,
roughly 50 students per
grade, who have identified
that they want to pursue a
STEM-related career after
high school.
The projects the students
have created range from
research questions where
students designed an experiment
and presented
that at a regional or state
competition and are showing
the research results that
they’ve found, including
the effect of screen time
on emotional recognition
abilities on teenagers and
adults at GBS, to engineering
feats that might make
Google jealous.
Some of the projects included
lacrosse goal line
technology, an LED disco
table, a portable gaming
station, a remote control
airplane, an airflow umbrella
dryer and more.
One of the most impressive
projects was from the
engineering club, creating
their own autonomous animated
vehicles.
“They were given one
of these remote-controlled
cars as part of this national
competition, and their job
was to soup it up and redesign
it so it could drive
by itself,” Rylander said.
“There were various levels
of challenges, like to put
Kate Gregory, a GBS
freshman and member of
the STEM program, created
a rainbow tornado lamp
display, which she and her
group had been working
on since December for the
showcase.
“We originally started
by thinking about making
a 3-D printer and printing
3-D chocolate,” Gregory
said.
She said her favorite
part of the process was the
showcase.
“Just seeing everyone
interested in your project
and being able to tell them
about it was really cool,”
she said.
Rylander said students
have been working on
the projects for anywhere
from one month to the entire
school year, including
some extracurricular projects
as well.
“There’s one student
who’s actually built an airplane
that a person could sit
in and fly, so he [brought]
that project,” he said. “That
was not part of a project
that our school has, it’s just
a passion of his.”
With such impressive
projects, it takes a strong
curriculum behind the students
to tackle such feats,
and Rylander said that’s
something he and the rest
of the science department
focuses on for the GBS
students.
“Part of the idea in
our curriculum design is
that we want to scaffold
our curriculum freshman
through senior year, so by
the time a student is a senior,
say, if they want to
print something on a 3-D
printer, they know how
to use the 3-D printer and
right), Jesus Crespo and Matthew Ruth show their
infinity mirror project at the showcase.
just print that part, it’s not,
‘Oh, I have to learn that
skill’,” he said.
Rylander said that the
students are given the opportunity
to work with
teachers in small group
settings, which also increases
their understanding
to these STEM problems
and projects.
Rylander is extremely
proud of the impressive
work the students have
created this year, and
rightly so, but the dedication
of the science department
and the rest of the
GBS staff are clear in the
high level of the work produced.
When asked how
students create such highlevel
projects, the answer
was clear.
“Well they go to Glenbrook
South, that’s the
answer to that question,”
Rylander said.

Nick Sandys returns to headline ‘My Fair Lady’ at Light Opera Works
Submitted by opera Works
Light Opera Works
kicks off the summer with
everyone’s favorite musical,
“My Fair Lady,” June
4-12 at Cahn Auditorium
in Evanston.
Featuring songs as “I
Could Have Danced All
Night” and “On the Street
Where You Live,” the Lerner
and Loewe classic
explores the battle of wills
between two unforgettable
characters — the Cockney
flower girl turned Mayfair
lady, Eliza Doolittle, and
her champion, teacher and
tormentor, the supremely
self-confident Henry Higgins.
Audiences will have a
rare opportunity to see a
favorite actor take on the
role of Higgins in both
“My Fair Lady” and the
classic play on which it
is based, George Bernard
Shaw’s “Pygmalion.”
Nick Sandys, winner
of Chicago Magazine’s
Best Actor Award, returns
to Evanston in the role
with which he made his
Light Opera Works debut
in 2009. Later this year,
Sandys will perform an
encore when he dons the
professorial tweeds once
again for Shaw’s acerbic
and iconoclastic comedy,
“Pygmailion,” at Chicago’s
Remy Bumppo Theatre
Company, where he is
producing artistic director.
Sandys finds the contrast
between the two pieces intriguing,
particularly in the
way Lerner and Loewe’s
musical score adds an element
of romance missing
in Shaw’s deliberately
anti-romantic vision.
“There’s definitely a
romantic lead element to
‘My Fair Lady,’ which is
fun to play with,” he added.
Audiences accustomed
to Rex Harrison, who
played Higgins in the musical’s
original production
as well as in the 1964 motion
picture, in which the
older Harrison offered a
more avuncular take on
the role, may agree. In
Sandys’ portrayal, the romantic
sparks fly, and no
one would mistake this
Higgins for Eliza’s uncle.
Light Opera Works’
“My Fair Lady” opened
Saturday, June 4, and runs
through Sunday, June 12,
at Evanston’s Cahn Auditorium,
600 Emerson St.
Remy Bumppo’s production
of “Pygmalion”
runs Nov. 23 through Jan.
8, 2017, at the Greenhouse
Theater Center in Lincoln
Park. Visit www.remybumppo.org.
Tucked-away Café Fleurette named ‘best local secret’
Offers authentic
French breads,
pastries in Metra
station
Megan Maginity
Managing Editor
For the past four years,
Rachel Beaudry has started
her day at 3:30 a.m. six
days a week.
It’s an early wake-up call,
but she said she wouldn’t
have it any other way.
“I truly have the best
customers and I love what
I do,” said Beaudry, who
owns Café Fleurette, an
authentic French bakery
located in the Elm Street
Metra Station, 754 Elm
St., Winnetka. “I’ve been
told that I’m the best local
secret.”
Once her alarm sounds,
Beaudry, a Glencoe resident,
gets ready and drives
into Chicago to La Fournette
Bakery and Café,
where she picks up different
kinds of bread and pastries
for the day from her
good friend and chef Pierre
Zimmermann.
Beaudry and Zimmermann
partnered after she
won a bid four years ago
for the then-vacant cafe
spot advertised in the newspaper,
she said.
“I went to pastry school;
I love pastries,” said Beaudry,
who attended The
French Pastry School in
Chicago. “I was actually
looking for a way to pay for
college for [my daughter]. I
thought I could run a little
bakery and coffee shop.
“All my friends said ‘No
way’ and I said ‘I think it
can really work. I think this
is a great idea.’ I won the
bid and I couldn’t believe
it. I was really excited and
I opened up and started
working with Pierre.”
Miche is a circular sourdough bread.
Zimmermann supplies
her bakery items — baked
fresh every day — and
Beaudry drives back up
to Winnetka and fills her
baskets with bread and
pastries. She needs to be
back to her cafe and have
everything set up, including
brewed Intelligentsia
Coffee, by the first train at
6:04 a.m.
Monday through Friday,
Beaudry serves her “regulars,”
she calls them, who
pick up breakfast for themselves
or pastries to bring
into the office. She also
serves parents who come
in to grab a baguette for
their children’s lunch sandwiches.
“My best kept secret is
you can just pull up, put on
your flashers and run in,”
she said, laughing.
Saturdays, though, are a
whole different ballgame.
Although there are no
commuters, Saturday is her
busiest day of the week.
Often, there will even be
a line weaving through the
station.
“Weekends are special,”
Beaudry said. “You have
family in town and you’re
treating yourself. People
have parties and barbecues
and need to pick up bread.”
Seeing that influx of faces
on the weekend is what
Beaudry enjoys most about
her job. She has developed
Café Fleurette
close relationships with all
of her customers throughout
the years.
Especially with the little
ones, she said.
“I’ve seen my customers’
kids every weekend for
four years now,” Beaudry
added. “I’ve seen them
grow up. They come in
here in their little jammies
and yell ‘Rachel, Rachel!’
They come in, hug me, kiss
me; it’s the best. They are
all my friends.
“It’s all about being part
of the happy celebrations
of people’s lives. It’s incredible.”
Sometimes it’s so busy
on Saturday, however, that
all the cafe’s bread and
pastries are sold out by 9
a.m. As a result, Beaudry
urges her customers to
plan ahead.
“If you call me by 10
a.m. for the next day, you
can have anything you
want,” she said. “I’ll hold
one chocolate croissant or
50 for you.”
Luckily, Beaudry saved a
Assorted pastries, including streusel brioche, croissant, apricot danish, chocolate
croissant, almond croissant and raisin roulade, are available at Café Fleurette in
box full of her best-sellers
for us to try when Assistant
Editor Courtney Jacquin,
Editorial Intern Jeni Siegel
and I stopped in May 27.
When we first arrived, I
was taken aback by the cafe’s
appearance. It’s small
and quaint, perfect for the
train station. It provides
a nice pop of culture in a
somewhat drab building
along the Metra tracks.
You can instantly smell
coffee and fresh bread
when opening the doors —
it’s mouthwatering.
Beaudry sliced the regular
and multi-seeded baguettes
for us to sample
first. I thought it would taste
like store-bought bread, but
this was different. It was
way more fresh and had a
thicker consistency.
We also tried the miche,
my favorite from the cafe.
She said people try this and
come back to tell her it reminded
them of what they
had in France. In that case,
I hope to make that same
comparison myself one
day, because this circular
loaf of sour dough could
Two of the four types baguettes offered at the cafe.
Pictured are the regular and multi-seeded baguettes.
have been my breakfast,
lunch and dinner that day.
As if we didn’t already
fill up on carbs, there was
more (though, we didn’t really
mind). We sampled an
assortment of croissants:
regular, chocolate and almond
with powered sugar.
Every morsel was packed
with flavor and incomparable
to a brand name —
that’s what makes Café
Fleurette successful, Beaudry
thinks.
“It’s a good product,”
she said. “It’s a really good
product.”
Other menu items include:
baguettes (olive and
cheese), danishes (apple,
apricot and blueberry),
streusel brioche, beignets,
raisin roulade, homemade
jams and macaroons (special
ordered).
As we winded down, we
asked Beaudry her next
moves: “I’m thinking of
expanding and opening
another Winnetka location.
But we’ll see. I’m
thinking it will be more
of a cafe with sandwiches
and soups.”
Stay tuned, “regulars.”

What made you want
to play softball?
Well, I actually played
house league baseball in
first and second grade and
started playing softball in
third. I’ve been around it
my whole life.
What’s your favorite
part of softball?
I really like the strategy
behind the game. The
game is more in depth than
what many people might
see, it’s a fast-paced game,
and I really like the competition
aspect of it and the
strategy behind it.
Do you have an
pre-game rituals or
superstitions?
I keep a dollar in my
pocket every game. A couple
years ago some of my
former teammates and I in
the outfield started to do it,
it started as an inside joke,
and I kept it going even
though I don’t play with
them anymore.
What are your goals
coming into this
season?
I really wanted to have
a better mental approach
at bat and really look for
the right play to be made.
Another goal I had was
to make All-Conference,
which I did.
What’s the best
coaching advice you’ve
ever received?
Control what’s in your
control. If there’s a bad
call or something along
those lines, just to know
that it’s out of your control
and go on.
What’s the most
difficult thing about
playing?
A good hitter isn’t always
successful. You hear
of good batting averages
being 300, that means you
hit three out of 10 times.
It’s pretty easy to get down
on yourself.
Who’s your favorite
professional athlete?
I’m a big Indiana University
fan and a couple of
years ago there was a guy
named Victor Oladipo who
played basketball there, he
was just a really good player.
I don’t really follow him
as much now because I’m
more of a college fan, but
it was really fun seeing him
and going to games.
If you could travel
anywhere in the world
22nd Century Media file photo
where would you go?
I’ve always been interested
in Australia, just the
different culture that surrounds
it.
When you were little
what did you want
to be when you grew
up?
In middle school i had a
dream to play professional
basketball, but obviously
now softball is now my
main sport.
What’s your favorite
subject in school?
I really like history, I
really like learning about
historical events. Also, I
took a class called sports
marketing last semester, it
was only a semester, but it
was a cool subject to learn
about because I didn’t
know much about it before,
but I’m really interested
in sports and it was
really interesting.
LA reclaims the crown
Ramblers thwart
NT 3-peat, win first
state title since ‘13
NEIL MILBERT
Freelance Reporter
The Loyola Academy
boys avenged their only loss
of the season to an Illinois
opponent and they did it in
the Illinois High School Lacrosse
Association championship
game.
Reclaiming the IHSLA
crown that they last wore
in 2013, the Ramblers dethroned
the state’s other
perennial powerhouse,
2014 and 2015 champion
New Trier.
In scoring a hard-earned
10-7 victory at Montini
Catholic on a rainy Saturday,
June 4, Loyola counterattacked
three times in surmounting
first-, second- and
third-quarter deficits.
“There were a lot of ups
and downs,” said the Trevians’
junior attacker Nelson
Gaechter, whose two goals
and two assists were the
biggest factor in forcing the
Ramblers to rally repeatedly
to regain command.
“I thought we could have
done better in transition but
Loyola came to play and
they finished.”
Loyola senior goaltender
Kevin Corbett time
and again made outstanding
saves to bulwark the
defense and senior attacker
Ben Gorman was the offensive
catalyst with two goals
and three assists.
The most conspicuous
members of their supporting
cast were sophomore
attacker Ian Griffith, senior
midfielder Patrick
Riordan and senior attacker
Patrick Flanagan,
with two goals apiece.
According to Loyola
coach Rob Snyder, making
the easy play made the
difference. “Simple, simple
plays — not trying to do
too much — just playing
the way we did all year and
Kevin playing awesome in
goal, especially at the end.”
Griffith’s goal edged the
Ramblers ahead 7-6 with
3:42 to play in the third
quarter and they stayed in
front the rest of the way.
Passes by junior midfielder
Billy Jardeleza and Gorman
set up the close-in shot
by Griffith that came only
12 seconds after Riordan’s
goal tied the score.
In the third quarter Riordan
and Griffith scored
again to increase Loyola’s
lead to 9-6 before junior
defenseman Sam Balch’s
bouncer into the net kept the
Trevians’ hopes alive with
3:03 remaining.
But, with 99 seconds
on the clock, Flanagan
struck for his 80th goal of
the season to seal the win,
avenging Loyola’s doubleovertime
loss to the Trevs
in a May 12 regular-season
game at Loyola.
The only other losses for
the Ramblers (17-6) came
on the road in games played
in New York, Maryland,
Washington D.C., Michigan
and Missouri.
New Trier (16-7) opened
the scoring when senior
midfielder Jimmy Crimmins
got a goal in the second
minute and dominated
the early stages of the contest,
thanks to aggressive
forechecking and controlling
faceoffs.
Midway through the
first quarter, Loyola made
a counterattack and Gorman
succeeded in sending
the ball past the Trevians’
senior goalie Chris Busch.
The teams went into
the last minute of the
quarter with the score
1-1 but then the situation
changed suddenly.
“We had the ball, we
turned it over and they got
two goals (in the final 40
seconds),” lamented New
Trier coach Tom Herrala.
The first of these goals
came when junior midfielder
Thomas Schmitz
latched onto a loose ball
in his end of the field and
broke away. The second
came 5.6 seconds prior to
Loyola Academy players celebrate with the IHSLA
trophy after defeating New Trier on Saturday, June 4, at
Montini Catholic. Tracy Allen/22nd Century Media
the break when Gorman
connected on a low shot
that was prefaced by a
picture-perfect pass from
junior midfielder Chris
Mancini.
In the second quarter
the Trevians struck for the
two goals by Gaechter and
one by senior midfielder
Colin Casas to move back
ahead before Flanagan
and Hackett answered to
give the Ramblers a 5-4
lead at the half.
The lead went back to
New Trier in the first 61
seconds of the second
half, thanks to goals by
Casas and junior attacker
Collin Kroll.
“Both teams really wanted
it,” Corbett said. “It was
back and forth the whole
game. Everybody was playing
as hard as they can —
diving for balls, diving for
sticks, everything.”
After three saves by Corbett
prevented the Trevians
from adding to their lead,
the Ramblers again exploded
for two rapid-fire goals
and those goals by Riordan
and Griffith gave them the
lead they maintained for the
remainder of the contest.
“Obviously, everybody
focuses on Patrick (Flanagan)
but these other guys
can make plays and they
can finish,” Snyder said.
While Flanagan was a
significant contributor to
the 2013 state championship
team, Gorman was
confined to bit parts.
“I didn’t play much but
it was fun to be part of it,”
reminisced Gorman, who
will be playing in college
at John Carroll next season.
“Patrick and I have been
playing together for four
years and today is the final
chapter. Winning it feels
exactly the way I thought it
would feel but to be honest
it’s a blur.”
Corbett and Gorman
cited the leadership of unsung
senior defenseman
Will Chestnut as being one
of the important components
in Loyola’s championship
season.
“Will was behind some
good players the last two
years,” Flanagan said. “He
got his chance to shine this
year and he stepped up.”
According to Corbett,
“He’s a huge leader off the
field. He demands the best
of everybody.”
Meanwhile, with one
year remaining in Gaechter’s
New Trier career, he
didn’t let the defeat daunt
him.
“The offseason preparation
starts now,” he said.
Since the IHSLA inaugurated
state championship
play in 1988, Loyola
and New Trier have met 14
times in the title game and
each team has won seven
times. There have been only
two years in which one of
the teams wasn’t involved
in the contest.

Eight is great
LA beats NT,
notches 8thstraight
state title
Tommy Mantice
Freelance Reporter
In the sport of lacrosse,
possession is the name of
the game. Without possession,
a team cannot score.
If a team cannot score,
they cannot win.
This was certainly the
case at the 2016 Illinois
High School Women’s
Lacrosse Association state
title game between Loyola
and New Trier.
Loyola defeated New
Trier, 16-10, on Friday,
June 3, and was rewarded
with its eighth consecutive
state title.
“This never gets old,”
Loyola coach John Dwyer
said. “Every year, there is
a special group of seniors.
This is another really special
group of seniors. They
fought really hard for this.
I’m not going to lie, we
were a bit nervous after the
first three minutes.”
In those first three minutes,
New Trier was able
to score four goals. Isabelle
Sennett, Lucy Murray, Darby
Tingue and Tace Sutherland
all pitched in to give
the Trevians the early lead.
“We knew we had to get
possession,” New Trier
coach Pete Collins said.
“We knew our offense
would have a lot of opportunities
because of it.
We had some really good
looks, some good shots
and some good goals.”
After Sutherland made it
The Ramblers pose for a team shot after winning their
eighth-straight state title.
4-0, Dwyer had seen enough
and summoned the troops.
“I would like to say that
we made some tweaks strategically
during that timeout,”
Dwyer said. “I also
had to calm our players
down. Nobody panicked,
we just had to come out and
win that next draw.”
That is where John Dwyer’s
daughter Brennan
Dwyer came in. She was
able to win the majority of
the draws, which led to the
11-1 run by the Ramblers
to end the half.
“I thought it was very
beneficial for us to have
possession,” Brennan Dwyer
said. “If you have the
ball, then you are controlling
the game. We had the
ball the majority of the
game and it showed on the
scoreboard. We take pride
in owning possession and
putting shots away.”
Dwyer was able to score
three goals in her third state
championship game despite
being face guarded.
“The face guarding didn’t
really bother us,” coach
Dwyer said. “We are so balanced
and we have so many
weapons offensively that
it didn’t really change anything
that we did.”
Eight of the nine Rambler
goal scorers had multi-goal
games. Colleen Huffman
had four goals along with
Dwyer’s three. Bailey Busscher
had three goals as well,
but her first goal might have
been the most important.
Busscher deflected a
loose ball into the net directly
after the Loyola
timeout in the first half to
give the Ramblers their
first goal of the game.
“We needed that first
goal,” Dwyer said. “Once
we got that first goal, I
thought we settled in.”
The Busscher goal started
a string of hustle plays
that favored the Ramblers.
“[Loyola] just wanted
the ball,” Collins said.
“They wanted the ball bad,
and they are pretty good at
getting those 50/50 balls.”
The victory gave Loyola
its 10th state championship
overall.
Smoliga prepares for Olympic Trials
Neil Milbert
Freelance Reporter
With a pair of 2016 NCAA
swimming championship performances
and a record time in
one of the events embellishing
her stellar resume, Glenview’s
Olivia Smoliga won’t be coming
home when the school year ends.
Instead, she will be staying
at the University of Georgia to
prepare for the Olympic Trials
in Omaha from June 25-July 3.
She will be participating in three
events — the 50-meter freestyle,
the 100-meter freestyle and the
100-meter backstroke.
“You have to change gears in
your mind and focus a little bit
more on yourself because it’s
not a team-oriented event,” the
former Glenbrook South superstar
reflected. “That’s why I’ve
decided to stay in Georgia. Traveling
affects you and it takes a
couple of days to get back into
it when you get off the plane and
are in a different environment. I
miss my parents and brother but
I have to focus on myself these
next couple months and hopefully
it will pay off in the end.”
Smoliga was one of her team’s
high impact performers in March
at Georgia Tech’s McAuley
Aquatic Center when Georgia
unexpectedly won its second
NCAA championship of her
three-year college career.
She won the 50 freestyle in
21.21 seconds to set a NCAA record
for the event, coming close
to the American record of 21.12
set by Abby Weitzeil of Canyons
Aquatics earlier this year.
She also was victorious in the
100 freestyle, recording a time
of 46.70 in holding off the 2012
U.S. Olympian Lia Neal of Stanford.
But for Smoligia the most memorable
event of the meet was the
400 freestyle relay. The Bulldogs
went into the race needing a topsix
finish to win the team title, and
the foursome of Smoliga, Brittany
MacLean, Meaghan Robb and
Hali Flickinger finished second.
Looking back on her college
career, she explained what made
being second best so memorable.
“Freshman year I was able to
be part of a national championship
team,” Smoliga remembered.
“We already knew we
were going to win by the second
day of the three-day meet.
It wasn’t a nail-biter. We had so
much talent. I felt like I was taken
along for the ride but I really
wanted to be part of that.
“However, this year was the
most incredible experience I’ve
ever been part of. It was a fight
every single day from the preliminaries
on. It literally came
down to the very last relay on
the very last day, and that event
was the highlight of my career.
I led off and Hali was the final
leg. When she touched the wall
we had the championship. It was
the most incredible feeling ever
to contribute to that and to come
from where we were in October
when we were nowhere near
where we wanted to be at the end
of the season.”
Georgia finished with 414
points to Stanford’s secondplace
395.
“The kids came together in a
magnificent way since October,”
said coach Jack Bauerle. “We
were not this team then — not
even close.”
The national championship
was the seventh for the Bulldogs,
who were projected as the
fourth-place finisher going into
the meet, and their third in four
years.
The school’s tradition of
swimming excellence was the
major factor in Smoliga’s decision
to go there for college.
“I just fell in love with Georgia
in the sense that they were about
so much more than individual
accomplishments because they
had been national champions for
so many years,” said Smoliga,
who also “looked at” Southern
Cal and Texas.
gold medals at GBS.
Prior to graduating from high
school in 2013 she competed in
the 2012 Olympic Trials, just
missing making the team by
finishing fourth in the 100-meter
backstroke with a time of
1:00.46. She also competed in
the 50-meter freestyle at the trials
and came in 23rd.
The pre-college highlight of
Smoliga’s career came when she
swam in her first international
meet, the December 2012 Short
Course World Championships
in Istanbul, Turkey. She earned
gold medals in the 100-meter
backstroke and as a member of
the 400 meter freestyle relay
team; a silver medal in the 50-
yard backstroke; and a bronze
medal as a member of the 400
meter medley relay team.
“I just went hoping to meet
new people and live in the moment
surrounded by so many
Olympians,” she said at the time.
“I wanted to learn new things
from all of the coaches and soak
up the atmosphere of my first senior
level international meet.”
Even though Smoliga downplays
her contributions to Georgia’s
2014 NCAA Championship
season, her outstanding
performances in Turkey probably
served as a springboard
for her excellent showing as a
freshman, a gold medal in the 50
freestyle and a bronze in the 400
medley relay.
A bout with mononucleosis
seemingly cramped her style
as a sophomore, but Smoliga
doesn’t want to use her illness
as an excuse.
“The summer after my freshman
year I got mono,” she said.
“I don’t know if it affected my
sophomore year but my sophomore
year wasn’t good. I was
disappointed but I came back
stronger. You kind of learn in defeat.
You learn what you need to
be a champion again.
“I changed my attitude completely
my junior year and it affected
me in a positive way.”
The power of her positive
thinking manifested itself in
a second-place finish in the
100-meter backstroke (1:00.06)
at the Pan-American Games in
Toronto last July. Brazil’s Etiene
Medeiros finished in 59.61 for
first place, breaking the Pan-Am
Games record of 1:00.35 set by
Smoliga nine hours earlier in a
preliminary heat.
Smoliga’s world-class career
was spawned at pools in Morton
Grove and Niles where she was
introduced to swimming, and
from there she went to the Glenview
Titan Aquatics Club.
“From sixth grade through
my senior year in high school I
swam for GTAC under Coach
Steve Iida and it was a blast,” she
said. “It all started with Steve. I
had such great coaching with
Steve and with Kelly Timson at
GBS. It’s fun reminiscing. Their
coaching kind of paved my way
to come to Georgia.”
While Olivia is making waves
in the swimming world, back
in Glenview her parents, Tomasz
and Elzbieta Smoliga, who
emigrated from Poland in 1991,
have a son, Matt, who is making
his mark on the ice as a high
school hockey player for Glenbrook
South.
“He used to be my little brother
but now he’s becoming my big
brother,” Olivia mused.

Growing up, Sarah Mc-
Donagh played a variety
of sports, including volleyball,
basketball and soccer.
The Glenbrook South
senior never even picked
up a lacrosse stick until
the summer going into her
freshman year.
“Going into freshman
year, I was looking for a
spring sport to play and I
had played soccer before,”
McDonagh said. “I wanted
something new to play. I
had gone to summer camp
[for lacrosse] the summer
before my freshman year
but hadn’t really thought
about it in high school.
“I remember my first
day of tryouts I thought I
was so bad I didn’t even
come back for day two.
But coach [Annie Lesch]
hunted me down and was
like ‘you have to play,’ so
I came back after that and
I’m glad I did.”
The Titans are glad she
did too, as McDonagh has
turned into an All-State and
All-American offensive
force who is set to go to San
Diego State on a lacrosse
scholarship next season.
But McDonagh wasn’t
always a force on offense.
She actually started her
lacrosse career as a defensive
player.
15-7 win over Lake Forest April 28 in Glenview. 22ND CENTURY MEDIA FILE PHOTO
“I wanted to play midfield
but my travel coach
John Brennan said to first
learn defense to hone those
skills and that then we can
progress towards offense,”
McDonagh said. “On defense
you communicate a
lot and it’s easy to pick up
on ball skills, but I wanted
to play midfield because I
wanted to run the full field,
stop someone but also be
able to score.”
Lesch had already seen
McDonagh’s talent and
said there was no hesitation
when she came back to
Glenbrook South after playing
travel ball wanting to
play a more offensive role.
“No hesitation at all,”
Lesch said. “She was playing
club in the off-season
and I was hearing rumblings.
‘Sarah has learned to
shoot, just wait till you see
it.’ She was practicing every
chance she got, finding an
open goal at a park, she had
borrowed a team ball bag
and kept it all off-season.
By the time I saw her again,
it was clear she was going to
be a full-field player.”
For many, choosing a college
is an incredibly difficult
decision. For McDonagh,
choosing San Diego State
seemed to come as easily as
the offensive transition.
“It was my number one
for as long as I remember,”
McDonagh said. “GBS has
had a couple girls go there
and I’ve been going to San
Diego State to visit family
for years so that made the
decision easier too.”
In Lesch’s past nine
years as the Titans coach,
GBS has sent 14 players to
play at the collegiate level.
McDonagh will become
the third Titan to play for
the Aztecs, joining former
Titan stars Nicole Pullano
and Jackie Leibrandt, both
of whom, like McDonagh,
were also GBS basketball
standouts.
“I see such a bright future
for her there,” Lesch
said. “I got to see Jackie
play this spring in two of
her final games as a senior
captain, so I could see the
level of play. I think Sarah
will make an impact right
away on this team. She’ll
likely start at defense, but
I wouldn’t be surprised if
her career is similar to her
high school career where
she progresses to midfield.”
“Looking back, coach
wanting me to play so
badly means the world to
