SUCCESS STORIES - PROFESSIONAL GOALS...
Lawrence receiving his Certificate in Practical
Horticulture from Tim Upson, the Director of
Horticulture, RHS.
Michaela and Sarah have completed Childcare
courses and Health & Social Care Level 1 at
Lower Grange Community Centre and are now
working towards their Preparing to Work in
Adult Social Care Level 2 course. They have
started to run a parent and toddler group on a
Friday afternoon, which is becoming increasingly
popular with families in their community.
Michaela says, ‘I chose to study the Shipley College
courses which ran at the Lower Grange Youth &
Community Centre as it is conveniently on the doorstep
for me, allowing me to fit studying around my children.
I progressed on to the Level 2 in Adult Social Care as I am
still unsure which area I want to specialise in, and working
with both adults and children will help me to make this
decision. I would highly recommend a course at Shipley
College. It’s been great for me to learn and meet new
people.’
Sarah says, ‘I chose to progress on to the next level
because I am currently caring for someone, but in the
future I would like to work in a nursing home. I would
recommend the course because although it challenges
me, I really like it. The tutor support has been brilliant
and they are very encouraging.’
Former Horticulture student Lawrence, 29,
started a part-time summer course on Trees,
Shrubs and Turf at Shipley College in 2012, leading
to a year-long Horticulture National Diploma the
following autumn. After completing the course he
landed a year-long traineeship at RHS Gardens at
Harlow Carr Harrogate.
Lawrence says, ‘Working for the RHS was a fantastic
experience that allowed me to learn so much, enabled by
my time studying at Shipley College. The lecturers were
very supportive throughout the course in helping me
to balance demands of outside work commitments with
studying. Ever-enthusiastic teaching split between field
and classroom work helped us to make sense of a vast
subject. I’m currently working as an Intern at Longwood
Gardens in Pennsylvania, USA where I’m continuing
to learn and become more and more excited by the
possibilities of horticulture.’
Jamie started studying on AAT Accounting at
Shipley College after finding a flare for finance
when working in a temping role.
Jamie says, ‘I felt completing my AAT course here at
Shipley College would allow me to develop my skills which
will make it easier to find a job in the future. I really enjoy
the course and feel it will let me develop the skills for the
future with the flexibility to study around my busy family
commitments. I have already recommended the course
to friends who have their own businesses as it would let
them develop their skills in finance and accounting and
enable their businesses to grow.’
FEEDBACK FROM
BUSINESSES
“The reason why the
apprenticeship scheme
is so successful at UKAR
is because of the great
partnership with Shipley
College. It’s a full team
effort.”
Lynda Daniel, Recruitment Co-ordinator
with UKAR and now an Apprentice
Ambassador for the Yorkshire
and Humber area for the National
Apprenticeship Scheme.
“Your support and the
candidates we have
recruited in the Trust
have played a very
important role in the
Trust’s recruitment plan.”
HR Business Partner, Bradford District
Care Trust
“After meeting with 4
providers we have decided
to go with Shipley College
as we felt that you had
distinct advantages above
the others... with a vast
amount of experience to
be able to support us in
PROVIDING
EMPLOYMENT
THROUGH
SECTOR-BASED
WORK ACADEMY IN
HORTICULTURE AT
INCOMMUNITIES
SHIPLEY COLLEGE HAS STRONG WORKING
RELATIONSHIPS WITH MANY LOCAL EMPLOYERS,
WHICH REGULARLY LEADS TO STUDENTS
FINDING WORK.
The recent Sector-Based Work Academy in Horticulture
which was run in conjunction with Incommunities Housing
Association is a great example of this. There were
24 adult learners who attended an intensive 4-week
course in Horticulture, and were supported to further
develop their employability skills.
The employers were so pleased with the results that they asked
for more people than originally planned. Of the 23 people who
went forward for interview, a total of 17 were accepted for
full-time work with the Incommunities Grounds Maintenance Team.
One of the learners says, ‘Just wanted to say thank you for the
effort you put in to organising the course, please pass on my
gratitude to the tutors. Courses like this are very useful and I can
see clear benefits for everyone involved. I hope you continue to
offer such programmes in future. Thanks again.’
Feedback from the employer’s perspective, Dean Blomfield,
Assistant Grounds Maintenance Manager says, ‘This arrangement
with Shipley College is a much better system than the recruitment
methods we’ve used in the past. Job applicants have an
opportunity to show us what they can do during the course,
before they even reach the interview stage. I have to say that
having people ready to start work who are already well-trained
and aware of how to work safely is invaluable to us as an
employer.’
HANNAH, 17
Company: Redfern Travel
Qualification: Customer Service Level 3
Apprenticeships are currently available in a number of areas
including Accountancy, Business & Administration, Customer
Service, Floristry, Health & Social Care, Horticulture, IT, Teaching
and Learning and Young People. Our successful apprenticeship
programme is a result of the outstanding links we have made with
local employers and the recruitment of suitable apprentices.
We are always looking for further businesses and employers to
help us to continue developing this for the future.
‘I really enjoy my apprenticeship which I am doing with Redfern Travel in Bradford. I have learnt lots of new skills in
College and in the workplace including developing my customer service skills. I enjoy the challenge of the work I am
involved in at Redfern Travel as there is always something new to get involved in from booking business travel and
hotels to day to day customer service.
As an apprentice I can learn new skills and put them in to practice alongside achieving a qualification. Upon completion
of my apprenticeship, Redfern Travel have offered me a full time job, which I believe is a result of my experience and
training through the apprenticeship programme at Shipley College.
I would recommend apprenticeships because they help develop skills and confidence which can then lead on to
employment and qualifications to put on your CV for the future.’
MEGAN, 20
Company: Macmillan Cancer Support, Fundraising Support Centre.
Qualification: Customer Service Level 2
‘I first heard that Macmillan were looking for an apprentice from my aunt who
currently works there. After recently moving to the area I was not sure what options
were best for me and this I felt would be a good opportunity to gain essential
customer service experience while working towards my Customer Service qualification.
I really enjoy being able to use what I have learnt in College to help me to deliver
outstanding customer service. I work with different teams of people who support me
and help me. I deal with enquiries over the telephone and by email by responding to
fundraising and event enquiries.
Working for Macmillan has helped me develop my skills and learn about their
organisation. I would like to continue my studies in Customer Service and hopefully look
for employment in Macmillan or a similar organisation locally.’
19+ ADVANCED LEARNER LOAN
IF YOU ARE WONDERING
WHETHER YOU CAN AFFORD TO
STUDY A LEVEL 3 OR SOME LEVEL
4 COURSES, FIND OUT ABOUT THE
OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO YOU...
JOANNE, 44
Course: AAT Level 3 – Diploma in Accounting
Advanced Learner Loans (formerly the 24+ Advanced Learning
Loan) have now been expanded to people aged 19 and over who
want to complete a Level 3 or 4 course. The loan is to fund the
tuition fees for study of qualification courses. Repayments don’t
start until you start to earn more than £21,000 a year.
If you are wondering if this may be an option for you to help you
achieve the qualifications you need, please see some of our recent
student feedback.
Joanne secured a loan of £1900 to fund her diploma. She found the application ‘simple and straightforward’ and the loan
covered her full course fee.
‘I did not have the money to be able to take this course and couldn’t believe there were such loans available for ‘mature’
students. This has given me the opportunity to do something I have always wanted to do.’
Joanne is aiming to go on to take her Level 4 qualification and to be a self-employed accountant.
INTRODUCTION TO MINDFULNESS
No fee reduction available
In a busy world where there are lots of demands for our attention, we can become stressed and anxious. Mindfulness
helps us to see clearly what is going on in our lives and rather than worrying about what has happened or might
happen, it trains us to respond skilfully to whatever is happening right now, be that good or bad. It will not eliminate life’s
pressures, but in this introductory course we can learn to use mindfulness practices to help us respond to difficulties in
a calmer manner that benefits our head, heart and body.
approximately 400-1000 calories per session based on their fitness level. Its format is ‘intermittent training’, which is a
combination of fast and slow rhythms. The dance routines help to tone the body and are a great cardio workout with
only moderate impact.
Bring a bottle of water, a towel and make sure to wear comfortable cushion soled shoes. Dancing shoes or jazz shoes
(with split soles) are the best. These will enable the feet to move side to side and rotate on the floor. Most of all bring
your voice, bring your spirit and bring your energy. It’s going to be a blast!
our tutors. You then sign up for the course that
suits your level and personal circumstances.
Where and when will my class be?
We offer maths and English courses at our main
site and in a number of community venues.
We know adults have busy lives, so we offer
flexible courses that run in the daytime and
evening. Most courses start in September and
end in June, but there are many points in the year
when you can join.
How do the classes run?
You attend for one session per week. Classes
use a combination of traditional delivery and
independent study depending on your needs.
At Level 1 and 2 you are encouraged to work much
more independently. Traditional resources such
as books and worksheets are available as well as
a range of online tools that are great for extra
practice at home.
On the English courses - you develop your skills in
speaking and listening, reading and writing.
On the maths courses - you cover basic numbers,
data handling, measurements, shape and space.
On both courses you will learn using everyday
situations so you’ll be able to see just how relevant
these skills are to your daily life.
Will I get a qualification?
Yes, qualifications on offer are Functional Skills
from Entry Level to Level 2. Your tutor will monitor
your progress and give you lots of opportunities
to practise the style of questions. They will also
advise when you are ready to take your formal
assessment - there are regular opportunities
throughout the year to do this.
Do I have to pay for my course?
If you don’t already have a Level 2, these courses
are free for most adults. We will check your
eligibility before you enrol.
What happens at the end of my course?
You can continue up through the levels until
you have achieved Level 2 and, if appropriate,
can progress on to GCSEs in English and maths.
We can also offer progression opportunities on
to a range of other courses, including ICT and
Business, Health & Social Care, Horticulture, Sport
and many more.
ESOL - ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES
Is English your second language? Would you like to learn more? You will practise speaking and
listening, reading and writing and work towards a College certificate or formal qualifications.
Classes run at our College campus in Saltaire and in community venues across Bradford. Some community
venues also provide a crèche. Courses start in September and you will usually attend for one or two
sessions per week.
Interested? To join a class you will need to come and see us at an information session where you will
complete an initial assessment and have an interview with an ESOL tutor. Don’t worry if you don’t speak
a lot of English or if you can’t read or write very well. We just want to get to know you so we can help you
to choose the best class for you. To find out when the next information session is and join a class, please
call our Enrolments Team on 01274 327327 and say whether you want a class in Saltaire or in one of our
community based venues. You can then sign up for the course that best fits your level and your personal
circumstances.
have a go at teaching pre entry ESOL learners, it inspired me to want to teach. As soon as I heard about
the PGCE running at Shipley College I signed up. It’s a huge challenge to work full-time and study but
I would not look back. My fellow students and I have become so supportive of one another. I have
definitely caught the teaching bug.’
enjoyed the format of the course, producing booklets and leaflets for new
staff in my service, rather than just producing essays. I have also had the
chance to work alongside staff from other organisations within the Adult
Autism Services. I have found qualities within myself that I didn’t realise
I had and my confidence has grown as a result. After, I will continue to
work with adults on the Autism Spectrum, but with a better understanding
of their needs.’
This qualification is aimed at people interested in working in adult social care. You will develop the professional
knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to work in this sector. Topics include: communication, the role of the social
confirm your place. You will need to attend College three days per week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
After successfully completing this course, you could progress into paid or voluntary work in adult social care. If you
COURSE: PREPARING TO WORK WITH CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE LEVEL 2
NAME: ALISON I AGE: 42
‘I chose to study the Level 1 Caring for Children and then progress onto the Level 2 Preparing to Work
with Children and Young People as when I was younger I didn’t have the opportunity to further my
education. I thoroughly enjoyed both of these courses, as I was able to study whilst working around my
son. In fact, I’m enrolling back in September to work towards expanding my qualifications in Childcare. I am
currently completing my 140 hours work placement at a nursery in Bradford. When I have finished I either
want to gain permanent employment at a nursery or become a Teaching Assistant.’
ALISON’S TUTOR SOPHIE SAYS:
‘Alison has recently started working on a voluntary basis at a nursery, which she is really enjoying.
Her confidence and self esteem has improved dramatically as a result of doing the community courses.’
