Hello &
Welcome
We are a small, friendly college based in
beautiful buildings in Saltaire Village. Our aim
is to help you fulfil your personal goals or help
you develop your skills to enhance your job
prospects for the future.
Your education and your safety are our
priorities and we are making adjustments to
ensure we meet both of these in the current
challenging times. For example, social
distancing requirements have meant we need
to review both how you enrol and how we
teach you. Many processes will therefore be
predominantly online or over the telephone.
We will keep updating you with any changes
as the situation evolves, and currently this
has meant we have had to cancel some
courses. We want to assure you that we will
do our very best to provide a high level of
service and the support you need at each
stage of your journey.
As usual, our part-time courses run variously during the day,
on evenings and weekends, and have various start dates
during the year. If you are looking for more information on
any of our courses, see www.shipley.ac.uk or call us on
UNESCO World Heritage Site
We are very fortunate to be situated within the beautiful village
of Saltaire, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our buildings are
now open to students, ready for courses to start, but we are
still providing support and training remotely. To respect social
distancing requirements, many aspects of both enrolment and
teaching will continue remotely.
The Saltaire Collection
The Saltaire Collection was created by the people of Saltaire
to tell the unique story of the World Heritage Site. It is housed
in the Archive room, within the Learning Resource Centre of
Shipley College and has a wealth of information for researchers,
schools or anyone who would like to know more about Saltaire.
The searchable catalogue has over 5000 items, covering a time
period from the origins of Saltaire in the 1850s, with plans for
building the village, to the present day. The Collection includes
all aspects of work and living in the village, its surrounding area
and its international connections, told through books, a variety
of documents, maps, plans, art and objects, some of which
belonged to the Salt family. Contact saltairestories@gmail.
com for more information.
As part of increasing awareness, topics relating to Saltaire’s
heritage and Bradford’s unique history have been delivered into
many primary and secondary schools in the Bradford District.
These cross-curricular learning resources and workshops
cover Key Stages 1-5 and feature many themes including
industrialisation, curses, migration and football!
Although a heritage lottery grant which supported this work
has now ended, the learning has most definitely not:. Please
see a quick round up below:
A collaboration with Leeds Beckett University has produced a
graphic novel and resources for Key Stage 2 & 3. These will be
published for schools to use nationally.
Historic England has commissioned the Saltaire Collection to
make two films with accompanying learning resources, which
quite literally bring the history of Saltaire alive.
A grant from Bradford.Gov enabled a pack of home learning
resources to be created for children, young people, parents, and
grandparents, so they can all enjoy being involved.
Both undergraduates and post-graduates continue to visit
the Collection to undertake research and to work with the
volunteers, thereby gaining valuable insight into their chosen
area of study.
Shipley College students have also benefited. Formerly a
Learning Officer for the Saltaire Collection, Rachel Wood, now
works as their Education Consultant and is also a part-time
English Lecturer at Shipley College. She has used photographs
and newspaper articles covering topics from the Gothic to the
Suffragettes as a stimulus for her students’ creative writing!
Adult groups have also enjoyed heritage trails as part of their
College courses.
You can email saltairestorieslearning@gmail.com for more
information about Saltaire Collection’s teaching resources.
Horticulture
Awards Evening
Over 100 people attended the annual awards
ceremony celebrating the successes of all the
students in the Land-based Department. Held in the
magnificent Victoria Hall, Saltaire, which was beautifully
decorated with autumnal floral arrangements by the Level 3
Floristry students and their tutors, Melanie Harvey and
Kathy Dixon.
The opening welcome was given by John Baker, the Head of our
Land-Based Sector, followed by an introduction from Jill Saunders,
the Head Gardener of the National Trust property at East
Riddlesden Hall.
Jill gave an impassioned speech about her horticultural career
since studying here at Shipley College and the vital role
education has to play in training good professional
horticulturalists.
It was a wonderful evening and a great
way to celebrate the department’s
success.
WHAT’S BEEN
HAPPENING
AT SHIPLEY
COLLEGE?
Learning
Resource Centre
The LRC team has been working hard to
increase access to ebooks and online information
during lockdown. As well as the usual course-related
information, we now have a collection of online fiction, as
well as a list of fiction and non-fiction exploring race, culture
and identity to reflect what’s happening in the news.
The LRC website also now has links to individual subject areas,
with links to relevant resources, so it’s even easier to find
resources for your subject.
You can find more information and links to access online
resources on the LRC Website under the ‘Online
Resources’ menu option. If you have any requests,
suggestions or queries, about this or anything else
LRC-related, please get in touch with the team
by emailing resource@shipley.ac.uk
Blooming
awesome display at
Harrogate Spring Flower Show!
Congratulations to our part-time Floristry students
for winning the Silver Award at the Harrogate Spring
Flower Show with their display for the album
cover category.
The students chose to represent Vivaldi’s ‘Four Seasons’
violin concertos composed c1716 and decorated a rhythmic
curve shape with flowers and foliage from each of the
seasons. These included hellebores, daffodils, tulips, scilla
and muscari. Flowers were intertwined with moss,
birch and twisted willow.
Customer
Service training
enhances the famed
Yorkshire welcome
College staff delivered WorldHost Customer Service
training to 45 members of Welcome to Yorkshire staff
in advance of the Tour de Yorkshire. The training was then
rolled out to the 100 volunteer Tour Makers across Yorkshire.
Peter, a volunteer Tour Maker said:
“After all my years of working and training I never
thought I would retire and attend a training
course! Both of the tutors were entertaining
and knowledgeable. I really enjoyed the
interaction and am proud to display
my pin.”
Ofsted
Success!
We have been rated ‘GOOD’ for a second
time by Ofsted in a positive report from inspectors
following a visit in January. It has been the second short
inspection carried out since we were judged to be good in
February 2013. Some highlights noted that managers, tutors,
and staff provide meaningful support to learners and that tutors
have a “good appreciation” of issues that learners may face as part
of their studies and lives in general. It also acknowledged that staff
are conscious of the need to support learners with issues such as
improving their mental health and keeping themselves safe.
Julie Kitcheman, College Vice Principal and Ofsted nominee said:
”We are very pleased with the many, very
positive things they saw and reported on,
confirming what a great place Shipley
College is to work and to study.”
Learning
Resource Centre focuses
on ESOL (English for Speakers of
Other Languages) learners
Reading Ahead is a national competition run by the Reading
Agency, which aims to promote a love of reading. The challenge is
to read six items (not necessarily books) in six months. We explored
different options for reading with learners, to find things which would
interest them: for some, this may be reading a magazine article about
gardening, or a recipe from a cookery book, or sharing a picture book
with their children. More confident readers could try a short story, or
even a novel by a popular author. The idea we promote to students is to
challenge yourself - whatever you feel comfortable with reading, push
yourself a little bit further and really challenge yourself to improve.
87 students signed up to the challenge. It’s been fantastic to see
how enthusiastic and eager learners are to improve their English
skills in general.
Challenge completers received a certificate, a Reading
Ahead goody bag with a dictionary, and entry
into a prize draw to win a £50 Amazon
voucher. Well done everyone!
Sector-Based Work Academies
The College works closely with businesses to deliver Sectorbased
work academies, which provide tailored training
employment with local organisations who are recruiting large
numbers of employees. Local organisations who have used this
service include Czajka Care Group, Bradford Care Trust, XPO,
Our part-time courses can help you achieve
both personal and professional goals.
Some of our students train to develop their existing
careers, some head to university to fulfil their
aspirations, whilst others like Louisa study to
change their career.
Louisa is pictured opposite (right) with colleagues,
Alison & Jessica (left) at RHS Harlow Carr.
Louisa, Former Horticulture Student
Why did you choose to study Horticulture at
Shipley College?
I’ve always loved nature and being outside but it wasn’t until
starting a vegetable garden on a balcony and meeting people
who showed me that the world of Horticulture existed that I
realised it could be a job as well as a hobby! My lack of practical
experience was holding me back from a job doing what I loved
and the BTEC Level 2 at Shipley College was exactly what I was
looking for in that it was a mix of practical and theory with a
track record of graduates getting into work.
How has the course benefited you?
As part of my course we were encouraged to seek practical
work experience, and through the support of tutors I did this at
RHS Harlow Carr. This really opened up a whole new world of
learning and opportunities.
What are you doing now?
After I graduated from Shipley College, I was successful in
gaining a 1 year position as Specialist Horticultural Placement
at Harlow Carr in the ‘Floral’ team. I enjoyed it so much that I
applied for another placement position in the ‘Edibles’ team,
which I will start in September. The highlights are being outside
every day - whatever the weather, seeing the changes in the
garden through the seasons, and working alongside incredibly
knowledgeable and passionate people who truly enjoy their job.
Would you recommend your course to others?
I cannot recommend Horticulture enough. It gives me the
chance to be outside, be creative, and the amount of knowledge
and development is limitless - you will never stop learning. I
honestly cannot imagine doing anything else and so grateful
to Shipley College and the tutors for supporting me in my new
career.
how to apply, please see page 80.
“‘I found the Advanced Learner Loan easy to apply
for. There were a few problems getting accepted
due to technical issues but after calling in to College,
we managed to get it sorted out. The loan amount
was about £3500 for the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in
Horticulture. Without this student loan there is no way
I could have been able to afford to pay for the course
out of my own money. The loan gave me the chance to
continue with my studies after recently completing the
Level 2 course. I hope to pursue my love of gardening
through further courses in the future.’
Joanne, Horticulture Level 3 student
“Lauren found the process of applying for the loan very easy with
become a nurse.’
Psychology Topics #4: Dreams & Personal Resilience with Keith Rice
A great many people are fascinated by dreams - their own as well as others - and yearn to understand those dreams that seem to offer
insight if only they could be understood. The Dreams sessions don’t aim to offer explanations of dream content - though there is some of
that - but rather to explore theories of dreams, to understand their nature. This should enable us to decide how much credibility to give
to their contents.
Life can be tough - sometimes with more ‘ups’ than ‘downs’. At times it can even seem like an endless struggle. The Personal Resilience
sessions aim to demonstrate, both in theory & practice, how to increase your ‘adversity quotient’ - ie: your ability to handle ‘tricky
situations’. This will include techniques to increase your personal resourcefulness, so you are more able to bounce back from difficulties.
To some extent, we will even look at how you change your mindset.
