International Workers' Day Observed<br />
Ageing Nepal<br />
Ageing Nepal in partnership with International Labour Organization (ILO) carried<br />
out a number of campaign activities to mark the International Workers' Day on 1 st<br />
<strong>May</strong>, <strong>2016</strong>. The campaign was organized with the major theme of “Elderly as an<br />
Emerging Workforce”. An Eight member core team under the leadership of Mr.<br />
Krishna M. Gautam, Chairperson of Ageing Nepal conducted following campaign<br />
activities:<br />
1. Two articles were published in National daily and weekly in Nepali and English<br />
Languages<br />
2. A TV Talk Show was arranged<br />
3. A Rally of about 200 people of all age groups was organized<br />
4. A Workshop was conducted on "Elderly as an Emerging Workforce"<br />
5. Thematic video was released<br />

Senior Citizens Take to Streets Demanding Respect to Work<br />

Senior citizens organized a rally coinciding with the International Workers Day,<br />
also popularly known as the <strong>May</strong> Day, demanding respect to work, on Sunday.<br />
The participants of the rally, including some 95-year-olds, were demonstrating in<br />
order to draw the society’s attention to the fact that their labour was going<br />
unrecognized without any evaluation despite their huge contribution to the<br />
country’s development.<br />
Through the rally, the elderly citizens wanted to give a message to the younger<br />
generation that it was with their hard work and contribution that the youth<br />
became what they were today, and hence they needed to respect and care for<br />

Special Programme for Elderly<br />

Hon’ble Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Women, Children and Social<br />
Welfare Mr. CP Mainali unveiled the government’s plan to bring special<br />
programmes for the marginalized senior citizens. He was speaking in a<br />
programme organized by a civil society organization to felicitate older persons of<br />
80+ yrs from the area. The programmes was organized to mark the 26 th<br />
Anniversary of Janakalyan Pariwar.<br />

After Kantipur covered news on the financial crises for the treatment of Divya<br />
Chaudhary, 65, who was physically abused by her villager in accusation of<br />
practicing witchcraft is receiving financial support for her treatment. So far, Rs.<br />
25,000 has been collected.<br />

VDC Secretary Makes Off With SSF<br />

The Secretary Bindu Lal Chaudhary of Manaraja Village Development Committee<br />
(VDC) in Saptari district has been absconding after he collected the Social Security<br />
Fund (SSF) meant for elderly and Dalit Children. Bindu had collected SSF of nine<br />
months released by District Development Committee two week ago and has been<br />
on the run ever since. As many of 200 elderly had reached the district<br />
headquarters Rajbiraj and chanted slogans against VDC secretary demanding<br />
action against Bindu. Meanwhile, an officer of District Development Committee<br />
Direndra Kumar Yadav said his office has already written to the concerned<br />
authorities to summon Bindu.<br />

Thirty six elderly including differently able people of Itahari-3, Sunasari district<br />
have started getting their Social Security Allowance (SSA) at their home. Generous<br />
social worker Bal Krishna Bista of the Village has taken initiation for this.<br />

The government has decided to increase the social security allowance (SSA) by<br />
hundred percent from the upcoming fiscal year. Senior citizens above 70 years,<br />
single women, people from marginalized groups and differently able people are<br />
now receiving Rs. 1000 as SSA including medical allowance. Now, the allowance<br />
has been increased twofold from earlier Rs. 1000 to Rs. 2000 per month.<br />

Padam Prasad Poudel, 78, proves that there is no age bar to be passionate for a<br />
hobby. Retired teacher and journalist Mr. Poudel is busy doing a movie, TV serial<br />
and advertisement not for money but self satisfaction. He has shown his acting<br />
skills in 61 movies and 68 TV Serials so far. Not only him, he is also involving his<br />
septuagenarian wife Dev Kumari Poudel in film industry. The elderly couple is<br />
enjoying their old age in acting.<br />

Octogenarian Quenching Thirst for Learning<br />

Mankumari Layalu is quenching her thirst for reading and writing in her eighties.<br />
She was deprived of education due to early marriage despite her keen interest for<br />
reading and writing. Now, she is attending classes run by Balsewa Community<br />
Learning Center supported by District Education Office from past 6 months. She<br />
says "I don’t have any high ambition after this class but I wanted to be able for<br />
reading newspaper and using cell phone."<br />

Durga Bahadur B.K is one example of many to prove that there is no age bar for<br />
learning. He is studying in a school at grade 10 at the age of 68. "I was deprived of<br />
education when I was young because of my parent's poor economic condition” he<br />
lamented. He has a desire for higher education. However, due to the poor<br />
economic condition he doubts whether his desire will ever be fulfilled.<br />

Yoga for Elderly<br />

National Sports Council has started yoga and meditation camp for senior citizens<br />
with the major theme of “Sports for All” in Rajbiraj, Saptari district. More than<br />
100 senior citizens assemble early in the morning and start doing yoga for two<br />
hours in District Sports Development Committee's Covered Hall.<br />
Senior Citizens Agitation Postponed<br />

The group of senior citizens who were agitating in front of the Min Bhawan-based<br />
Department of Transport Management in the capital for past three years has<br />
postponed their agitation after Government doubled Old Age Allowance (OAA)<br />
from earlier Rs. 1000 per month to Rs. 2000. Maha Prasad Prajuli, Chairperson of<br />
Senior Society Nepal says "The positive attitude of government influenced us to<br />
postpone our agitation. Now we are planning to protest differently for our other<br />
unaddressed demands.”<br />

Older People Rebuilding Their Houses<br />

The elderly of Bichaur, Lamjung district are compelled to rebuild their houses on<br />
their own, not waiting for the promised government help. Their houses were<br />
destroyed by the devastating earthquake of April 25 last year. Suk Bahadur<br />
Gurung, 73 is one of the examples of that Village. He grieved, “It has been a<br />
yearlong that we have been waiting for the government support. Now, I am<br />
building my house on my own with help from my relatives”.<br />
Chepang Community Facing Starvation<br />

The marginalized Chepang community of remote Brushwang village in<br />
Mahadevsthan VDC has been living on wild roots and nettles due to lack of food<br />
for the past two months in Dhading district. Chandra Man Chepang, 67, is the one<br />
of many. He lamented, "We have been living on wild roots for months but now<br />
availability of even wild roots is declining. If this situation continues we will have<br />
no option but to die of starvation next year".<br />
