Uncertainty over how peer review and discussions about research quality
and validity should be handled
3.23 This report notes three cases where the peer review process was cited as part of the reason
for delayed publication. When publication of research on the rising use of food banks (Case Study 6),
and on evaluating changes to GP practice boundaries (Case Study 7), was delayed, government
spokespersons said that the reports were awaiting peer review.
3.24 Case Study 8 shows the difficulties that can arise if government withholds research,
even if this is because of doubts over the quality of research, without explaining its reasons.
