NEWBURYPORT – Pickleball has come 

to town and could become the community’s 

fastest growing sport, particularly among 

seniors. 

The game, often called oversized ping pong, 

has been rapidly growing in southern states, 

like Florida, where there are lots of active 

seniors, including Newburyport snowbirds. 

According to the Sports & Fitness Industry 

Association’s 2015 Participant Report, more 

than 2.46 million people play pickleball in 

the U.S. The USA Pickleball Association 

estimates there are almost 13,000 indoor and 

outdoor courts and at least one court in every 

state. 

On June 21st, the Newburyport Senior 

Center launched its pickleball program with

she will address to the audience she 

will attract next week at the Langley 

Adams Library here. 

Having produced dozens of awardwinning 

films in recent years, this 

Groveland native could talk about 

some of the lighter and more upbeat 

subjects her films have focused 

on, such as Alive Inside: A Story 

of Music & Memory, a film about 

how music impacts the mentally and 

emotionally challenged. 

But the audience can be certain 

that Dreyfous, the founder of 

the Utah Film Center, will talk 

passionately about how her often 

controversial films impact “deeply 

held beliefs.”

The Ipswich Public Library has completed the initial phase of 

a slate of planned space renovations. The changes are intended 

to improve the look of the building and its functionality, meet 

changing patron needs, and provide additional services. 

New Teen Room 

The public is invited to come see our newly renovated and 

expanded teen area, designed by Ipswich teens and reserved 

for teens only. With new furnishings generously funded by the 

Board of Library Trustees, the room offers spaces for homework, 

socializing, reading, or library activities. Reference Teen Librarian 

Katy Wuerker has significantly increased program offerings for 

teens over the last year.

Elm Table,’ made by local craftsman Fred Rossi from the wood 

of the storied American Elm that stood at the corner of County 

Street and East Streets, until it succumbed to Dutch Elm disease

Kelly, the center’s activities coordinator, is 

spearheading the launch of the new sport, 

which combines elements of ping pong, 

tennis and badminton. 

Pickleball was invented in 1965 on 

Bainbridge Island, a short ferry ride from 

Seattle, WA. To appease bored kids, Joel 

Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum 

created the game. 

Despite the name, no pickles are used. 

Supposedly the name comes from Joan 

Pritchard, who started calling the game 

pickleball because “the combination of 

different sports reminded me of the pickle boat 

in crew where oarsmen were chosen from the

Letter Carrier Food Drive 

a Big Success 

Our Neighbor’s Table, The Pettengill House Inc., Community Action 

Inc., Community Service of Newburyport, The Salvation Army of 

Newburyport, and the Merrimac Council on Aging would like to thank 

the entire community for it’s overwhelming generosity in support of the 

2016 Letter Carriers “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive held on Saturday, 

May 14th. This annual food drive, coordinated by the National Association 

of Letter Carriers, was once again a tremendous success, generating 

donations totaling many thousands of pounds of needed food for local 

food pantries. 

A big thank you to our local postmasters who coordinated the pick-up 

and distribution of donations and to all the dedicated letter carriers who 

worked long hours on Saturday, handling and transporting heavy bags 

filled to the brim with food donations. We know how much extra work 

this food drive entails, and we are so grateful for your efforts. 

Thank you to the many volunteers who gave up a beautiful Saturday 

afternoon to help with unloading, sorting, checking expiration dates and 

shelving all the food at local food pantries. 

Finally, our heartfelt appreciation to everyone who donated so generously. 

This food drive came at a time when local pantries need to replenish 

the shelves to meet the increased demand during the summer months. 

Please know that your donations truly make a difference to local families 

struggling to put food on the table. Your kindness, your generosity and 

your support are greatly appreciated.

Now, Rossi has worked his 

magic again, using the remaining 

elm to create custom-designed 

display gondolas for the library’s 

main browsing room. This new 

bookstore-style layout encourages 

people to browse through new 

books and other materials. The new 

gondolas were funded using the 

State Aid to Public Libraries grant, 

awarded to towns annually by the 

Massachusetts Board of Library 

Commissioners.

Kelly learned about pickleball 

from her mother in New Jersey, who

“I love playing pickleball with my 

mother,” she said. 

Last fall, even before the new 

center opened, Kelly proposed 

pickleball as a new program for 

the Council on Aging. Director 

Roseann Robillard told Kelly to 

put out a sign up sheet to test the 

interest. 

To everyone’s surprise, more than 

100 players filled up four pages. 

That level of interest both excited 

and worried Kelly. She had no 

equipment, no court and she feared 

that with so many people wanting 

to play there would be long wait 

times between games. 

Pickleball Is Here 

The center, next to the Bresnahan 

School, proposed to the school that 

it be allowed to use the basketball 

court and possibly another sports 

court for pickleball. The answer 

was yes, but not while school was 

in session. It was impractical to 

do criminal background checks 

on everyone who wanted to play 

pickleball. 

So the new pickleball league will 

begin the first Wednesday in July 

(July 6) after school is out. 

The center has purchased two 

nets, several paddles and plastic 

balls that look a lot like wiffle balls. 

Kelly is studying the layout of the 

court, but she wished she had an 

experienced pickleball player she 

would rely on for answers to her 

questions. 

In answer to her prayers, Helen 

White emailed her out of the blue, 

offering to help. White, who lives 

in Northern Virginia, is pickleball’s 

Mid-Atlantic ambassador. 

“The exact person I needed just 

fell in my lap,” Kelly said. 

She invited White to the 

organizational meeting on Tuesday 

and expects to learn from her how 

to lay out a pickleball court. 

A pickleball court is the same size 

as a doubles badminton court and 

measures 20 by 44 feet for both 

singles and doubles play. The net 

height is 36 inches at the sidelines 

and 34 inches in the middle, as 

compared to a tennis net that is 36 

inches in the center. 

The court is striped similar to 

a tennis court with right and left 

service courts and a seven-foot novolley 

zone in front of the net that is 

called the “kitchen”. 

A pickleball paddle, which is 

smaller than a tennis racquet, but 

larger than a ping-pong paddle, 

are solid and made of lightweight 

composite materials, including 

aluminum and graphite. 

The ball has holes through it like 

a wiffleball and travels at a third of 

the speed of a tennis ball. 

There is a rule book that outlines 

how the game is played. Points are 

scored only by the serving team. 

Serves are underhanded. Games are 

normally played to 11 points, and a 

team must win by two points.

WILDLIFE REFUGE - BEHIND 

THE SCENES TOUR! 

Held on the following days: 

Saturday, June 25th at 9:30 am 

and Sunday, June 26th at 1:00 pm 

Join a refuge ranger for a behind 

the scenes tour of Parker River 

National Wildlife Refuge. Tour will 

be conducted via refuge van, with 

several brief “drive by” stops along 

the way. The tour will present an 

“up close and personal” look at the 

refuge through the multiple lenses 

of the cultural history of Plum 

Island and the Great Marsh, native 

wildlife and their habitats, and 

the role of refuge management in 

the conservation of these precious 

natural resources. Participants may 

be driven along areas on the refuge 

otherwise closed to the public. 

This guided two hour program is 

most appropriate for older teens 

and adults. Binoculars and/or a 

camera are recommended, but not 

required. Meet the ranger in the 

lobby of the refuge visitor center 

15 minutes prior to the program 

start time. Each session is limited 

to 14 participants; no more than 4 

individuals per sign-up. Again, this 

is a vehicle-based tour, with limited 

stops on the refuge. Advance 

registration is required for this 

program, as enrollment is limited. 

Be advised that individual tours 

may be subject to cancellation.

has been entertaining audiences for over 20 years in the New England area. She is also actively involved

International Film Festival and Cannes film Festival. “We are most grateful to Ms. Parisi for obtaining 

a grant from the Amesbury Cultural Council that has allowed her to 

perform for us at Whittier Home”, says Ms. Bryant. 

The program will be followed by a light repast of cold cuts, 

salads, beverages and desserts with lots of lively friendship and 

conversation in a beautiful setting.

IPSWICH – In response to the concerns of taxpayers regarding the increase 

in last years’ actual tax bills, we are instituting a new policy of apportioning 

your total estimated tax over the four billing quarters. Such an increase is 

permissible under MGL Ch. 59, Section 57C. This will help to reduce the 

annual spike in the actual tax bills that will be mailed December 31, 2016 

and are due on February 1m 2017 and May 1, 2017. This apportionment is 

in effort to level the four quarters of real estate and personal property taxes. 

The Preliminary first and second quarterly bills will be mailed by June 30, 

2106 and will be due August 1, 2016 and November 1, 21016. We hope 

that this will improve property owners’ ability to budget their annual tax


obligations throughout the year, and assist banks in calculating you tax escrow withholdings. The actual tax bills 

due next February 1 and May 1 will still vary from the first two bills, due to the changes in the tax rate and assessed 

value, but this method of apportioning the total bill will help lessen the impact of these changes.

I understand that periodontal 

disease is a major cause of 

tooth loss in adults, but is there 

anything I can do about it? 

Gum disease—periodontal 

disease—often progresses slowly, 

without pain, over a long period 

of time. This is one reason why it 

is common among older adults. 

The longer the disease goes 

undetected and uncontrolled, the 

more damage it causes to gums 

and other supporting tissues. 

Although periodontal disease is 

caused by bacteria, other factors 

can increase the risk or severity of 

the condition. These include food 

left between the teeth, smoking, 

smokeless (spit) tobacco use, 

badly aligned teeth, ill-fitting 

bridges or partial dentures, poor 

diets and some systemic diseases 

such as diabetes. 

Although periodontal disease 

is common, it can be controlled 

or arrested. In its early stages, 

it can be reversed. Treatment 

of advanced cases may require 

surgery. Look for these warning 

signs and see your dentist if you 

notice any of them: bleeding 

gums when you brush; red, 

tender or swollen gums; gums 

that have pulled away from the 

teeth; pus between your teeth 

and gums when the gums are

are moving apart; any change in 

your bite; any change in the fit 

of your partial dentures; constant 

bad breath or bad taste.

Your dentures were made to 

fit precisely. If they are cared for 

properly, they do not change 

shape. They can become loose 

due to natural changes in the 

gums and bone supporting them. 

As the jawbone begins to shrink, 

so do the gums. In addition, the 

teeth wear over time and become 

less effective during chewing. 

Most dentures should be replaced 

every 5-8 years. 

When your dentures do not fit 

properly, see your dentist as soon 

as possible so adjustments can be 

made. Professional relining of the 

denture may extend its lifespan. 

Do not try to change the fit of 

your dentures yourself. This can 

damage them and make them 

unrepairable. 

If I have full dentures, do I 

really need to see the dentist as 

often as before? 

Even if you no longer have 

your natural teeth, you should 

see your dentist once a year for 

an oral examination. The dentist 

will examine your mouth to 

check for any problem with the 

gum ridges, the tongue and the 

joints of the jaw, as well as screen 

for oral cancer. For a variety of

released information in their July 

2016 issue indicating that we need 

to beware: The SPF (sun protection
