How to help someone
you’re worried about
• If you’re worried about the mental health
of a friend or relative or think they may be
depressed, try to encourage them to get
help from their GP. Reassure them that
depression and low mood are common and
can be treated successfully. You could also
offer to go to the GP with them, as they may
find it daunting to talk about their emotions
when they’re feeling vulnerable.
• Listen to what they have to say, being
supportive and non-judgemental.
They may need a lot of reassurance, so be
patient and kind. Don’t force them to talk
if they don’t want to – just make it clear
you’re there when they need you.
• Don’t be dismissive of their problems and
resist telling them to ‘cheer up’. It’s not as
simple as this. Remember that depression
is an illness.
