• Don’t blame them for their behaviour.<br />

Depression often makes people feel guilty<br />

and that they’re letting others down,<br />

so they may already be blaming themselves.<br />

Reassure them that this is a treatable illness<br />

and not their fault.<br />

• If they are struggling to cope with<br />

daily tasks, offer practical assistance.<br />

For example, if they are not eating properly,<br />

you could try making them a meal.<br />

• Keep in touch with them. Depression can<br />

increase isolation as people who are<br />

depressed often avoid others’ company.<br />

• Look after yourself. This may be a stressful<br />

situation for you as well as them. If you’re<br />

struggling, you could ask your GP for help<br />

and advice.<br />
