Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends
of Al Amanah College;
On behalf of Al Amanah College staff, I
would like to extend our best wishes and
congratulations to all students, families
and friends on the coming of the Holy Eid,
Eid-Ul Fitr Al Mubarak, which marks the
end of the Holy month of Ramadan. We
ask Allah ta^ala to accept all of our good
deeds, and to gather us in Paradise with
our beloved Prophet Muhammad, may
peace be upon him.
Next week marks the end of Term Two. It
has been a very busy term for teachers,
students and of course parents and carers.
The secondary school mid-year exams will
conclude in Week Ten, teachers will be
announcing marks to the students during
the first two weeks of Term Three. Teachers
will be going over the exams with the
students during class. It is very important
for students to take good notes on the areas
of the exam in which they identified a
weakness. Some parents can be anxious
about their child’s result in a particular
exam and would like immediate feedback
from the teacher. I ask that, unless absolutely
necessary, to please wait until the
reports are issued at beginning of Term
Three so you get a full picture of how your
child is progressing in a particular subject.
You also can make use of the secondary
parent-teachers interviews that will be
held in week two of Term Three during
which you will be receiving your child’s
mid-year report. Primary parent-teacher
interviews will be held during week one of
Term Three. Parents will be receiving
their child’s portfolio and mid-year report.
I encourage you to make an appointment
with your child’s teacher ASAP.
Special Assembly
Al Amanah and Salamah College have been
working in partnership with the University
of Al-Azhar Ash-Sharif of Egypt and Darulfatwa
– Islamic High Council of Australia
to accredit our religious studies teachers as
trained Imams where their call of duty will
extend beyond the school gates into the wider
Australian community in advocating the
true teachings of our noble religion Islam.
Next week, we will be holding a special assembly
to officially recognise the great
achievement of Mohammad Hazarvi, a hafiz
of the Holy Qur’an, who was the first Australian
to participate in the 23 rd International
Holy Qur’an Competition that was organised
by The Egyptian Supreme Council for Islamic
Affairs in Egypt this year. We are all very
proud of Mohammed. We ask Allah to reward
him greatly and grant him a high status
in Paradise.
In addition, we will be officially welcoming
back two of our dedicated Islamic studies
teachers, Shaykh Chadi Al Kasem and
Shaykh Amr Alshelh, who have recently
returned from Egypt, after undertaking a
training program to become accredited
Imams.
Have a wonderful, safe and relaxing holiday.
T he Holy Month of Rama dan
Every accountable Muslim is obligated to fast the month of Ramadan. Fasting is not obligatory on the insane person and the person
whose body cannot tolerate fasting. It is obligatory to make the intension each night to fast the following day of Ramadan. During
the day of fasting one must abstain from inserting any substance into the head or the body cavity through an open inlet, excluding
one’s pure tahir (saliva) while still inside the mouth between dawn and sunset. Moreover, the Muslim must abstain from committing
apostasy at all times. Apostasy takes one out of Islam. Apostasy invalidates fasting even if one returns to Islam immediately afterwards.
After returning to Islam, one must abstain from eating and other fasting invalidators for the remainder of the day. Moreover,
one must make up the invalidated day(s) of fasting after Ramadan
The Zakah of Fitr and its Recipients
The Zakah of Fitr is due on every Muslim who is alive part of Ramadan and part of Shawwal (the month after Ramadan.)
The due Zakah for each is a “sa^” or four times of a pair of average-sized hands cupped together filled with the most common staple
food of one's area. It is an obligation upon the Muslim to pay the due Zakah for one and one's Muslim dependants if on the day of the
Feast of Fitr (^Id-ul- Fitr) and the night after it he has enough to meet one's debts, clothing, lodging, and sustenance, and the sustenance
of those whom one must support.
The man must pay the Zakah of Fitr for his wife, non-pubescent children, slaves, and poor Muslim parents. He may not pay for his pubescent
children or solvent parents without their permission. It is permissible to pay the Fitr Zakah any time during Ramadan, even on
the first night. However, it is recommended to pay it during the day of the Feast and before the ^Id Prayer, because this mends the
hearts of the poor people before the Prayer. It is prohibited to delay paying the Fitr Zakah until after the sunset of the day of the Feast
without a valid excuse.
Recipients of Zakah:
For all types of Zakah, the intention is obligatory upon setting one's Zakah portion aside. Zakah must be paid to the eight categories of
Muslims deserving of Zakah as mentioned explicitly in the Qur'an (Surat at-Tawbah, Verse 61):
إِنَّمَا الصَّدَقَاتُ‏ لِلْفُقَرَاء وَالْمَسَاكِينِ‏ وَالْعَامِلِينَ‏ عَلَيْهَا وَالْمُؤَلَّفَةِ‏ قُلُوب ‏ُهُمْ‏ وَفِي الرِّقَابِ‏ وَالْ‏ غَارِمِينَ‏ وَفِي سَبِيلِ‏ اهللِ‏ وَابْنِ‏ السَّبِيِل
Among the eight types which are most common today are:
1. Al-Fuqara': Those (who are poor) who earn less than half their basic needs.
2. Al-Masakin: Those (who are poor) who earn half, but less than what meets all their basic needs.
3. Al-Mu'allafatu Qulubuhum: The new converts to Islam whose hearts are to be reconciled.
4. Al-Gharimun: Those who are unable to pay their debts.
5. Ibn-us-Sabil: The travelers who do not have enough to enable them to reach their destination.
It is neither permissible nor valid to pay Zakah to other than the eight types of Muslims specifically mentioned in the above verse. That
is why it is not valid to pay Zakah to any charitable project, hospital, or the like to meet this obligation
Al Amanah College Students Wearing Uniform
A big thankyou to parents for their support in ensuring their children are
wearing the correct school uniform. Often the colder months will bring a
drop off in the standard of uniform being worn each day however we are
receiving a significant number of compliments from various parts of the community
and visitors to the school regarding how good our students look and
the pride they clearly show in their school.
Year Twelve Working Hard Towards HSC
Term Three is a very demanding time for Year Twelve as they enter the
final phase of schooling. Weeks four and five are the Trial HSC Examinations.
These examinations are extremely important and we encourage
students to prepare thoroughly. The beginning of Term Three is
also the time when all practical submissions for the HSC are due. The
final weeks of term are a great time for Year Twelve students, however
they need not to switch off from their studies during their final weeks –
every minute of effort will count going into the HSC. This is a very
demanding time for students and we wish them all the best of luck
through the submission period, their Trial HSC, and the final weeks as
a school student.
Annual Ramadan Competition 1437H
It is with great pleasure, we remind you that as in every other year Al
Amanah College is holding its annual Ramadan competition. All
students have already received the invitation letters that include all
requirements and instructions about how to enter the competition.
We encourage all students to take part with the correct intention in
this great initiative.
Participants will be tested for this competition during the first week
of Term Three, i.e. starting Wednesday 20 th July. Cash prizes will be
given out to the top achievers and all participants will receive a certificate
of participation. A special assembly will be held in week two of
Term Three to announce the winners and recognise the great efforts
made by Al Amanah students
Year Seven to Ten Half Yearly Examinations
The Year Seven to Ten students will commence their examinations in
Week Nine and continue through to Week Ten. The students were
given study guidelines from Term One to use as a basis for their time
management and study routine. All students are to remain consistent
and continue to study throughout the examination period and speak to
teachers if they need assistance.
School Canteen Survey
In Term Three we continue to improve the services provided
by the school canteen, hence we will be asking parents
and students to complete a short online survey on
the services provided by the school’s canteen. A link and
instructions on how to complete the survey will be sent
to all parents via Class-Dojo. It would be great to receive
any feedback or suggestions from our school community
about what they would like to see on the new menu in
Term Three.
Parent/Teacher Nights
Primary parent/teacher night will be held in Term Three
on Wednesday 20 th and Thursday 21 st July.
Secondary parent/teacher night will be held in Term
Three on Tuesday 26 th July. The evening is very important
and we strongly suggest parents come and ask
teachers for strategies to help students at home. Mid
Year Reports for years Seven to Ten students will be distributed
on the night.
Al Amanah College Annual Gold Week Fundraiser was held on Thursday 26 th May, 2016. This year the high school and primary school
SRC combined to make this event a successful one.
Students kindly brought cakes and sweets to be sold on the day. They also enjoyed sweet corn, spider drinks and jelly cups organised by the
teachers.
Our students were gleaming in their yellow and gold attire but it was their generosity which really shone through as they proudly donated
for a good cause.
On behalf of both the primary and high school SRC we would like to give a big thankyou to all our families and students for generously
donating to the Gold Week Fundraiser. We would also like to extend our gratitude to the dedicated primary and high school SRC
Fire Safety Visit
Newsletter 2013
On Tuesday 21 st July, we had a visit from our local firefighters as part of our H.S.I.E. curriculum. The students attended a Fire Safety
presentation, where the firefighters explained the importance of having smoke detectors in your home and what to do if there is a
fire at home. They discussed the importance of fire safety with the student. The students also had the opportunity to view the fire
truck and the different equipment used by firefighters. This experience not only helped the children to develop a better understanding
of fire safety, it also helped to reinforce our efforts to achieve Outcomes from the Early Years Learning
Framework with the children which states children should be connected with and contribute to their community. It
was a great learning experience enjoyed by all primary students.
All teams did extremely well with the U11 and Open Teams qualifying to the grand final held at Wests Tigers stadium. Our U11s
completed the competition undefeated by putting on a try fest in the semi final against Unity Grammar school.
I would like to thank all students for participating and representing their school with great sportsmanship showed throughout the
Year Three Bread Factory Excursion
On Wednesday 1 st June students in Year Three went on an excursion to
Basserie Bakery, an award winning artisan bakery in Botany Bay.
Students had the opportunity to explore a working bakery, see where
flour is stored, watch people mix huge amounts of dough and bake
them in hot ovens. They learnt how flour gets turned from wheat into
flour and what ingredients are used to make bread. Some lucky students
even got to taste a sour dough starter. In a test kitchen students
were able to make their own bread plait and vegetarian pizza and then
eat it for lunch!
Like always, we could not have had such a successful excursion without
our parent helpers. Thankyou to Mr Chamma, Mrs Krayem and
Mrs Alobeidi for all of your help!
The holy month of Ramadan is traditionally greeted worldwide with what has become known as Sayuban
Ramadan. Young and old get together to share a meal, welcoming the most blessed month of the Islamic
welcomed the month by sharing a breakfast meal together, participating in a number of activities and
enjoying listening to an informative lesson about Ramadan. Students were encouraged to bring their own
vegetarian cultural dish to the celebration, promoting diversity amongst our community.
The 23 rd ICPA Ramadan Iftar Dinner 2016
The Islamic Charity Projects Association held its 23 rd Ramadan Dinner on 10 th of June 2016 at Al-Amanah College Grand Hall, hosting over
320 official guests and bolstering honourable community merits.
Twenty three years ago, the inaugural ICPA Ramadan Dinner set the trend. Since then it has continued to raise the bench mark for Ramadan
Dinners (Iftars) in the community, maintaining a top position on many fronts.
Unlike any other in calibre and inclusion, the ICPA Ramadan Dinner remains a platform for unity, rewarding moderation and inspiring dialogue
on social and global affairs.
After delivering his spiritual and moving brief on the blessed month of Ramadan, Darulfatwa Vice Chairman, his eminence, Sheikh Ibrahim
El-Shafie said,
“Darulfatwa Australia reached out to the hundreds of millions of Muslims around the world to further solidify the stand of mainstream moderate
Islam and disintegrate calls of radicalism by minority sects.
“Through its open and inclusive approach, Darulfatwa Australia strengthened its relations with international figures, and affiliated with
Islamic institutions globally, on top of which is Al Azhar Ash-Sharif of Egypt”.
His closing was a practical and realistic guide for the future.
“We should put our hands together and work alongside the large Australian community to purify our society of any wrongdoing.
“We need to maintain our strength to safeguard our society from evil and misleading ideologies that will lead to segregation and corruption.
“These words must be reiterated until these meanings become engrained in our hearts and minds, and as such, living a harmonious life on the
basis of strong cohesion with all fellow Australians.”
The unprecedented feature of the event was undoubtedly the recognition of the Al-Azhar Ash-Sharif graduates.
For the first time ever and through an arrangement between Al Amanah College, Salamah College, Darulfatwa Australia and Al-Azhar Ash-
Sharif Egypt, four Australian imams completed a three month course at the world renowned university in Egypt in the moderate teachings of
Islam.
Mr Ayman Alwan, Al Amanah College Principal, called on His Excellency General the Hon. NSW Governor, David Hurley, Dr. Al-Shelh,
Consul General of Egypt, Yusuf Shawqi, to present the achievement awards to the recipients:
1. Sheikh Haysam Hammoud
2. Sheikh Abdul-Latif Nachar
Family Meals - Why Do They Matter?
Newsletter 2013
Getting the whole family to sit down for dinner can be very difficult - with sport practice, working late and homework taking up the evening
hours, many family members eat at whatever time best suits them - and that is all right from time to time. But research shows that families who
eat together regularly (that is more than three times a week), have shown to have more positive outcomes when it comes to health, family relationships
and social development.
The family dinner table, after all, is where children learn manners, converse and interact with grownups, share what is happening in their lives
and experience new foods. The preparation of food and the table setting process are all part of the roles in a family and shape thoughts and feelings
around food and family.
Social changes that are affect the amount of family meal times:
• Increased hours spent at work
• Number of Australians living alone
• Number of women (particularly mothers) in paid work
• Number of single parent households and/or family displacement
• Use of technology in the household
• Percentage of income spent on food and soft drinks away from the home
Benefits associated with frequent family meal times:
• Improved relationships between family members
• Increased intake of healthy foods and healthier eating habits
• Increased understanding of social behaviours
• Improved speech for children
• Better mental health outcomes
• Decreased risk of children taking up smoking
What you can do:
• If you are not already eating together regularly, aim to do so just one night a week.
• If dinnertime is too hard to get everyone together, try to have a special family breakfast on the weekends or a family lunch.
• During the week, do not worry if everyone can make it. Sit with whoever is at home to enjoy a meal.
• Ignore all phones, turn off the TV and ban texting at the table.
• At a loss for conversation? Ask each family member to share one good thing and one bad thing that happened during their day.
• Take turns talking so no one is left out. Use an egg timer for little kids if they tend to ramble!
• Get your children involved in the meal preparation. Older kids can take charge of the whole meal, while younger ones can help set
the table.
