TRENDSETTERS ENGINEERING DREAMS, GARAGE-TO-GLOBE It is not very often that one hears about the field of robotics. So when Arundhati, a management graduate, decided to co-found an engineering solutions company with Hughen (a scientist & patent holder) in the 90s, there were naysayers galore. Today her company has a towering presence across the globe. A maverick at heart, she doesn’t carry a surname as she feels that surnames create stereotypes. BY POORNIMA PARAMESWARAN BATISH Having an entrepreneurial dream was nothing less than a nightmare in the 1980s and 1990s. And if you happened to be a woman, you would be dismissed of as out of your mind. Arundhati believes that she inherited the entrepreneurial genes from her father. Born in an upper middle class Maharshtrian family where girls were educated and groomed to be good bride material, Arundhati had different plans. After her college, she enrolled into a German language class. Here she met a bunch of engineers who had come to learn German to converse better with their clients. She ended up doing German translations for engineering companies and in return she got all the practical engineering knowledge they had accumulated over the years. She also pursued A young woman trying to market an engineering product was unheard of an MBA in Marketing in this period. She now was clear that marriage was not the next option. She wanted to work. She quit home in, what she says, Bollywood style. Armed with her CV and a bag of clothes, she landed in Mumbai. She just wandered her way into an exhibition on engineering and left her CV in kiosks of companies she was interested in. Like they say, if you have a strong desire, the stars will conspire. To her own surprise, she landed a job. The exhibition was also where she met her business and life partner Hughen. An engineering college dropout who was not happy with theoretical knowledge and a 9 to 5 job, Hughen was at the exhibition to get ideas.
