Trees cut for new rail trail.
NEWBURYPORT – Construction of the second leg
of the popular Clipper City Rail Trail is underway.
Surveyors have marked the center line of the 1.5-
mile trail, and the contractor, E.T.&L. Construction,
has begun cutting trees and brush on the long-unused
rail line.
At a public hearing on the trail last fall, Mayor Donna
Holaday called the city’s first rail trail “a tremendous
resource for our city.” During summer weekends, as
many as 1,000 people walk, run and bike along the 1.1
mile long trail.
Marco Ruffo, the superintendent on the project for
E.T.&L., said last week that he expects the second leg
of the trail to be as popular.
“There are a lot of kids along here. It will be a safe and
fun place for them to come out and ride their bikes,”
he said.
Ruffo said the almost $5 million project is just getting
started. Senior project manager Geordie Vining said
recently that the trail, which runs from the waterfront
boardwalk to March’s Hill, may take at least until 2018
loves it. They really turn out for it.”
With a theme of “Scene and Heard” Amesbury Days 2016 was launched last week
with a popular Block Party, the seventh annual Brewfest featuring 20 brewers, a Classic
Letters To The Editor
A Response to Jack Grundstrom
Dear Editor,
Community Announcements
Kindly post this letter in response to Mr. Grunstrom’s letter in the June 20th
Community Connections
weekly issue.
Thank you Mr. Grundstrom for bringing this issue to the readers’
attention. You are correct that the VFW logo included in the Rowley
Business Spotlight
Veteran’s Association “The Rowley V” ad in the Town Common newspaper
should be and has been removed.
As a veteran and a soldier who served my country, I share your strong
For
Sale
opinions about providing Real support, Estate services, and • a For place to Sale visit for my
fellow veterans. As such, I would like to follow up on your comments and
reiterate our support of our veterans at the Rowley Veterans Association.
Please accept our invitation to visit our
Sports • Club and read our
Sports • mission statement
that we proudly hang on our wall.
Sports
In addition to our Mission Statement, we are proud of the services and
programs we have initiated in support of our veterans. For the past five
years, we have successfully Pets, executed Animals, these programs under Plus the management
at the Rowley Veterans Association with support from our members.
Although, some of our members are not veterans, our patrons support all
of our armed services and are very appreciative of the sacrifices our veterans
make for our country.
Health
These patrons are
&
passionate
Fitness
about these programs
and are proud of our collective accomplishments.
We recently initiated the Charlie Hardy Scholarship in memory of our
beloved manager and veteran. This is our first year, and we successfully
selected two very strong candidates who will be pursuing a college education
after graduating from Triton Regional High School. This was an unbiased
process that brought two very formidable young individuals into our Club.
We wish them great success and we look forward to next year’s scholarship
process. Donations from our Club members have been very generous and
our raffles have been helpful to reach our scholarship goals.
The Rowley Veteran’s Association has worked very hard remodeling the
building, landscaping the grounds and creating a great place for locals to
come and enjoy themselves. We have to agree with Mr. Grundstrom that
we do enjoy some entertainment at our establishment, and we recently
hosted “The Fools” at our renovated Stars & Stripes function hall. We
had a very nice evening that was a benefit dedicated to a well-respected
band member who passed away last year. The donations that we raised
for the benefit, totaling $3,000, were given to a veterans’ shelter located in
Beverly, Massachusetts. My thanks and appreciation go out to everyone
that attended the benefit.
We also adopted a veterans’ shelter in Haverhill and have been supporting
them for the past two years. The residents at the shelter enjoy gifts from
us on the holidays and we enjoy sponsoring their night out at the ball park
every year.
This year’s Memorial Days Parade was a testament to the RVA’s
commitment to our veterans.
Despite the threat of bad weathers,
it was one of the most well attended
parade in years with more veterans
marching than the past previous
years. We celebrated with our
veterans after the parade with the
marchers and families from town.
We can’t wait until next year.
So forgive us for enjoying the
events we host at the Rowley
Veterans Association; we do enjoy
ourselves. We do, however, follow
our mission statement with passion
and commitment. As such, whenever
we can leverage our goodwill to help
support our veterans, we proudly do
so.
The fact that the VFW logo
was still in the ad was an honest
oversight and we thank you again
for pointing that out to the readers.
Please feel free to join us at our Club
on Bradford Street. We can provide
more details on what we do every
day to support our troops.
With respect,
David Leavitt

Second Rail Trail Construction Underway
Continued from page 1
to finish the trail.
The trail, which will be eight to
10 feet wide, will follow the old
train tracks that for about 100 years
carried freight on the City Branch
Railroad to the ships docked at
the waterfront. The tracks were
abandoned in the 1970s.
It will have multiple access points
for bikes, wheelchairs, strollers and
pedestrians from different streets
and neighborhoods. The project
will feature sculpture, interpretive
panels and custom signage with
funding support from the Mayor
Gayden W. Morrill Charitable
Foundation and the Recreational
Trails Grant Program.
Cutting trees is always a challenge
in an urban environment. Ruffo
and city employees have met with
neighbors to the trail to discuss
which trees will be cleared and
which ones will be protected.
“Most of the neighbors are
thrilled,” he said.
The city has asked that neighbors
to stop using the abandoned rail line
to dump grass clippings, leaves and
other debris on the land formerly
owned by National Grid and the
B&M Railroad.
“Some abutters have been observed
continuing to dump private yard
waste into the trail corridor. Please
note that all such dumping is illegal,
potentially punishable by fines, and
hinders development of the trail,”
the city web site states.
“Some abutters have indicated
that they thought such waste would
simply be buried on site, but it all
must be removed in order to install
appropriate fill and foundation
for the trail,” according to the
city. “The corridor is now public
land controlled by the City of
Newburyport, and we ask that all
such dumping cease going forward.
Homeowners can take yard waste
to the City’s Crow Lane Yard Waste
Facility or place it in backyard
compost bins on the homeowners’
property. We appreciate everyone’s
cooperation.”
To get to this point, the city had
to negotiate long-term leases with
property owners that included some
homeowners, National Grid, the
U.S. Coast Guard, Newburyport
Redevelopment Authority,
Newburyport Waterfront Trust
and New England Development
because the trail will pass through
their properties.
The asphalt trail will have a
diverse character, starting along the
Merrimack River waterfront with
new access to river views, wind
through the congested South End
residential neighborhood along the
old City Branch rail corridor, and
curving through acres of woodlands
to Parker Street in the Town of
Newbury. It will cross High Street
through an old railroad underpass
that will have some decorative
lighting. The trail will end just over
the Newbury town line at Parker
Street, not far from the train station
and the terminus of the first trail.
Ultimately, the city would like
to link its two trails at the train
station, but there are some logistical
challenges that MassDOT must
resolve before that can happen.
IPSWICH - Catch a bus to come to the Ipswich Public Library on Monday nights for six weeks this summer.
This special transportation service is sponsored by EBSCO and the Ipswich Public Library Board of Trustees.
Families who live at either end of town can take advantage of the free transportation on Monday nights,
while other families might like to take the bus from those locations just for the opportunity to ride a yellow
school bus together or to give next fall’s kindergarten students some practice in riding the bus. All children
must be accompanied by a responsible caregiver over the age of 18. The bus will pick up at the school bus
stop near Rosewood Drive at 5:45 p.m. and the school bus stop near the Ipswich YMCA at 6 p.m. It will
leave the library at 7:30 p.m. to return patrons to those locations. The bus service will run Monday nights
from July 11 through August 15. Special programming will be offered at the library on those nights. On
Monday, July 11 the Children’s Room will host Creature Teachers at 4 p.m. and then a second show at 6:30
p.m., ideal for the bus riders! The instructors specialize in environmental and animal education. Their goal
is to fascinate audiences with the wonders and diversity of the animals that share our planet. Animals the
audience might see at this program include: a wallaby, kinkajou, bearded dragon, hedgehog, kookaburra,
sugar glider or other interesting species. Please contact Laurie Collins in the Children’s Room of the Ipswich
Public Library at 978-412-8713 with any questions.
Business Spotlight
June 29 - July 5, 2016 www.TheTownCommon.com Page 11
For
Sale
It’s very easy for a REALTOR®,
friend or loved one to tell a
homeowner getting ready to
sell that they need to get rid of
their “stuff” to make the home
more appealing. However, that
“stuff”, as it is called, may have
been acquired over a lifetime and
have special meaning. Let’s take
a look at this sometimes stressful,
rarely fun process of getting your
home ready to sell.
You have decided to move!
Good choice by the way, as we
are in the middle of a seller’s
market. Your reason for moving
could be to downsize or maybe
even to buy a bigger house. As
you look around your home
with your REALTOR®, you not
only have to figure out how to
present the home at its best, but
also decide which possessions to
keep and which to toss.
Why Do We Keep?
Why have we accumulated
so much and refused to throw
out so little? Seeing items you
haven’t thought of or seen in
a while can prompt pleasant
memories of times past or of
loved ones no longer alive. We
take pictures not to look at them
right away, although we all do,
but to keep the memory of that
point in time. We don’t always
do this consciously, but keeping
possessions is a way of reminding
us of another, hopefully nicer
time. When lightening your
load, emotions come into play.
Some are sweet and others are
less so, seeing items you haven’t
thought of or seen in a while can
set off terrific memories of the
past or of loved ones no longer
with us.
Sentimentality
Often times a large number
of items you have accumulated
came from a loved one who has
passed. You feel that in some
way you are eliminating the
memory of your loved one by
ridding yourself of the table,
chair, Hummels or knick knack
that they left you. There is no
Nobody can advocate that you
throw these items out. It is up
to you. What I would say is
loved one wouldn’t expect you
to feature the 50 year old love
seat or the wooden totem pole in
your living room. You can’t hold
on to everything. Some do hold
onto everything (if you don’t
believe me check out “Hoarders”
on A&E). By removing some of
these items from your home you
are much more able to live in the
present, and you leave less of a
burden for the next generation.
I recently had a seller who passed
away suddenly after inheriting
everything from his mother who
had passed. This small home
had enough furniture and boxes
to fill the White House.
Work from one drawer, one
closet, one room at a time. This
way you won’t be overwhelmed.
Even if you aren’t selling it
wouldn’t hurt to put that DVD
rewinding machine or over the
head hair dryer that was left to
you, on the curb or if it holds
some spot in your heart in
storage.
Store It
If you’ll no longer have room
for certain possessions that are
meaningful to you, you are
ambivalent about or you believe
or the items you need to decide,
what to do with have special
meaning. Relax, put things in
storage if you can’t decide but
also ask yourself, do I really need
this? Would whoever left this to
mean really expect me to keep
it all these years? Look at what
you have, evaluate, sort, give to
relatives, give away, sell or hire
a professional to help. Once
you’ve eliminated some “stuff”
your home will be ready to show
buyers, and once sold, you’ll be
ready to move on.
Health & Wellness
By J. Peter St. Clair, DMD
I find that some foods have
become difficult to chew and
swallow. Do I really need to eat the
same amount or variety of food
that I did when I was younger?
Maintaining proper nutrition is
important for everyone, young or
old. Many older adults do not eat
balanced diets and avoid meats,
raw vegetables and fresh fruits
because they have trouble chewing
or swallowing. These problems can
be caused by painful teeth, ill-fitting
dentures, dry mouth or changes
in facial muscles. Others find
their sense of taste has changed,
sometimes due to a disease or
certain medications.
Because of these and other
factors, the diets of older adults are
often lacking in calcium, protein
and other nutrients essential to
dental and overall health. You need
a balanced diet.
If you are unable to eat certain
things that you enjoy and contribute
to a well-balanced diet, address the
reason this is a problem. Consult
your physician, nutritionist and
dentist about the possible use of
supplements to make up for the
parts of your diet that are lacking.
Why do my teeth seem darker?
One of the changes you may
Brighter Smiles...
Dental Changes With Age – Part 3
notice as you grow older is that it’s
harder to keep your teeth clean and
white. This is because the sticky,
colorless layer of bacteria, called
plaque, can build up faster and in
greater amounts as we age. Changes
in dentin, the bone-like tissue that
is under your enamel, may also
cause your teeth to appear slightly
darker.
Regular professional dental
hygiene visits are vital to
maintaining and monitoring your
oral health. For most, professional
teeth bleaching is a cost-effective
way to brighten your smile.
Why does my mouth feel dry?
Reduced saliva flow that results in
a dry mouth is a common problem
among older adults. It is caused by
certain medical disorders and is often
a side effect of medications such as
antihistamines, decongestants, pain
killers and diuretics. Some of the
common problems associated with
dry mouth include a constant sore
throat, burning sensation, problems
speaking, difficulty swallowing,
hoarseness or dry nasal passages. Left
untreated, dry mouth can damage
your teeth. Without adequate
saliva to lubricate your mouth,
wash away food, and neutralize the
acids produced by plaque, extensive
cavities can form.
Your dentist can recommend
various methods to restore moisture.
Sugar-free candy or gum stimulates
saliva flow, and moisture can be
replaced by using artificial saliva
and oral rinses. Xylitol, a sugar
