fireworks, grilling and watching “Independence Day: Resurgence.”
Pretty perfect, right?
While there are many ways to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday, for many a barbecue party is a
guaranteed hit.
As my dad once said, “It’s time to put some dead animals on the grill.” Sounds harsh now, but he was right.
To help you get you into the spirit — and maybe provide a little motivation and inspiration for the long
summer holiday weekend — here are some of the best spots in the area to enjoy barbecue.
Let’s start with a newbie, THE BEARDED PIG.
This southern BBQ and beer garden restaurant opened a
few months ago to packed houses. Demand was so huge
the first two days they were open, the folks behind the
Pig ran out of food. Since then their reputation has
grown to be top-notch. With plenty of beer on tap and
an amazing outdoor seating area, this is a prime spot
for great barbecue. When you’re in the San Marco area,
stop by and welcome these folks to Jacksonville.
Jack recommends: Ribs, smoked to perfection.
Bearded Pig 1224 Kings Ave., (904) 619-2247
Now let’s head to Avondale and MOJO NO. 4,
URBAN BBQ and Whiskey Bar. BBQ and whiskey:
two things that make me happy. What sets MOJO No.
4 apart from others is the upscale dining atmosphere;
something you might expect in the Avondale area.
There aren’t many barbecue joints that are fit for a
proper date, but MOJO No. 4 is. Did I mention that
they have more than 175 whiskeys on hand? That
certainly doesn’t hurt, either.
Jack recommends: Burnt Ends with a side of collards.
Mojo No. 4 3572 St Johns Ave., (904) 381-6670,
Now lets talk sauce; easily one of the most important
ingredients when it comes to great barbecue. While some
grill-masters prefer a dry rub, I would rather ladle on the
sauce. JENKINS QUALITY BARBECUE has
been making mouths water in Jacksonville for more
than 57 years. The savory sauce is one of the reasons
customers can’t get enough. No matter which of three
locations you visit, including Downtown, make sure a
roll of paper towels is within reach.
Jack recommends: The Sweet Mild Sauce. Buy it by the jug.
Jenkins Quality Barbecue 830 Pearl Street
(904) 353-6388, jenkinsqualitybarbecue.com
Next up is a smokehouse on wheels; the BUTT
HUTT SMOKEHOUSE FOOD TRUCK to be
exact. In 2015, Butt Hutt was voted “Best BBQ” at the
4th-Annual Jax Truckies Food Truck Championship.
These guys are on a mission to put Florida on the map
with their array of secret family recipes that result in
tender smoked meats and scratch made sides. Each
week you can easily spot the big orange-and-yellow
truck running around the Cultural Core.
Jack recommends: The Bangin’ Beef Curry Fries.
The Butt Hutt Smokehouse Food Truck, butthuttjax.com
(904) 482-7512
Let’s end our quest by mentioning the venue with the
smallest area for parking but the most food. While THE
SOUTHERN GRILL in San Marco offers much
more on its menu, the barbecue always has been a
highlight. Downtown and Southbank businesses flock
to this restaurant at lunch, where you can find smoked
sandwiches, sausage dogs, burgers and melts. No
matter how long the wait, I promise, it will be well
worth it.
Jack recommends: Smoked corn beef or Smoked pork.
The Southern Grill 800 Flagler Avenue, (904) 858-9800
thesoutherngrilljax.com
ON THE COVER
Michelle “Mickey” Payne is a local model and recent graduate
of the University of North Florida. While on this cover shoot for
Jack, she marveled at the flavor of the giant rib from The Bearded
Pig and said, “I’ve never had this much fun on an assignment.”
jacksonville has an amazing craft beer scene and it continues to
grow each year. Our signature breweries are not only making a
splash around the Cultural Core, some are taking over the state.
With the temperatures going up, here are some local craft beers that
will help keep you cool.
Whatever the beer you choose, keep it safe when you’re out this
summer. And make sure you have a designated driver.
SUMMER
BREWS
ON TAP
Lemon Drop Wheat
River City Brewing Company’s spin on a Summer
Shandy. A smooth lightly hopped wheat beer with
a refreshingly lemon citrus taste. An ice-cold beer
and a view of downtown Jacksonville aren’t too
shabby on a summer afternoon.
River City Brewing Company
835 Museum Circle, rivercitybrew.com
Easy on the Eyes
This session IPA has a bright citrus aroma from
the Centennial and Citra dry-hopping. Light,
easy, perfect for a day spent on the water.
Intuition will soon be opening their new location
across the street from EverBank Field. The
rooftop bar is a nice addition.
Intuition Ale Works
Raging Blonde
Raging Blonde is a malt-oriented golden blonde
ale that pushes the boundaries of the style with
generous late kettle additions of Cascade and
Centennial hops. Sounds fancy already. The
result is a knockout beer featuring a riveting hop
flavor without any associated bitterness.
Veteran’s United
j
Adalwolf
This is a German style pilsner that is lightly
hopped and malt-forward. On top of the
Adalwolf, later this summer Aardwolf will
be re-releasing their Gose, a slightly soured
German wheat brewed with salt and coriander
to create a very light and refreshing beverage.
Two summer brews …score!
Aardwolf Brewery
1461 Hendricks Ave, aardwolfbrewing.com
Big John’s Apricot Wheat
It’s all in the name. This is an easy drinkin’
wheat ale made and named for the patriarch
of the Miller family. Bold City adds a bit of
apricot to the mix that makes a brew that perfect
for the upcoming hot summer days.
FUN SICK PHONY
aims to make Jax a music hub
When Fun Sick Phony
takes the stage,
classically great songs
like “No Diggity” receive a soulful
and jazzy spin.
Within the Indie Funk genre,
this band also puts itself into
playing a mix of Rock, Blues,
and Funk styles. The guitarists’
electric riffs fill the room, followed
by groovy key sounds and catchy
drumming that shuffles the room
into a funk — the good kind.
A full set — a combination
of originals and covers —
is punctuated by lengthy
instrumentals that allow each
musician to show off his skill.
The band’s four members —
Andy Wiltshire (vocals, guitar),
Edwin Rivera (vocals, keys), Greg
Miller (bass, guitar) and Chris
Castro (vocals, drums) — have
fallen in love with Jacksonville.
Members of the group say they have
COURTNEY CLARK
jack
experienced a growth in bookings
during the past six months.
Fun Sick Phony used to be
known as The Rub, but members
opted to change the name when
former lead singer Robbie Raspa
left the band.
Castro and Raspa, who played
music for more than seven
years while they were
stationed here in
the Navy, formed
the band in 2012.
Although they had
to dig hard to find
the music scene back
then, they knew they
wanted to continue making
music as civilians.
Raspa, who recently left the
band on good terms for personal
reasons, explains that Jacksonville
has a style of music that is specific
to the city. She describes it as a
mix of Indie, Southern, Blues and
ROBBIE RASPA
Rock. Jacksonville’s “eclectic
vibe” is what drives the band.
Rather than trying to make it big
and move away from the river city,
band members wanted to grow
with the evolving music scene. For
them, there’s no reason to leave a
city when the city can be built.
Like Nashville and
Country, band members
hope to help make
Jacksonville the
music hub (style to
be determined) of
the Southeast.
Rivera, who
took on management
responsibilities after
Raspa’s departure, explains that
networking among local musicians
is essential. Performing with other
musicians helps build a network in
town, which is why the band hosts
Jam Sessions every other Friday at
Downtown’s Hourglass Pub.
To build upon Jacksonville’s
local music framework, Rivera
believes the city desperately
needs more live-performance
venues. He said it would be much
easier for them to spring up if
the Jacksonville City Council
would lower the cost of a liquor
license. More venues would attract
more touring musicians, which
would create conversation about
Jacksonville as a destination and
the envisioned music hub.
Music is culturally and
universally shared, Rivera says,
because everyone loves some
form. Even so, local musicians
feel hindered when a community
doesn’t support live performances.
Jacksonville-based recording
studios — True Tone Studios and
Endangered Wise Men Studios
— the ones used to record the
band’s EP, also play a pivotal
role in transforming the musical
environment of the city. Rivera said
the high-quality sounds emanating
from these studios make it possible
for bands like Fun Sick Phony to
post their music online, which will
lead to even more networking.
Jacksonville’s restaurant culture is an ever-evolving affair.
As older spots plateau and fade, new places come on strong,
meaning there’s never a shortage of exciting places to explore.
Here is one our favorite spots.
Fried Cheesecake Bites and more.
CREATIVE BURGERS
DROPPING JAWS
AT BLIND RABBIT
The Southern Burger
PHOTOS: MATT PITTMAN FOR JACK
BY MATT PITTMAN
jack
What once passed for the classic American hamburger
sure has changed over the years.
There was a time when two all-beef patties, special sauce,
lettuce, cheese, pickles, and onions on a sesame-seed bun was
deemed extraordinary.
Nowadays it’s boring.
People expect — and deserve — something different.
One restaurant in the Cultural
Core that’s making unique burgers
is THE BLIND RABBIT, which
opts for creative rather than
excessive.
Sitting at the end of a busy
block on King Street, this place
specializes in burgers and whiskey.
Each carefully stacked burger has its
own special twist — a combination
of sweet, spicy and savory is in each
and every bite.
Don’t expect to find plain
yellow mustard, Heinz ketchup or
Duke’s mayonnaise. Here, you ask
for curry mayo, bourbon-spiked
Creole mustard or peach habanero
hot sauce.
Sure a tomato sounds good, but
a fried green tomato sounds even
better. And why get white onions
when you can get crispy tobacco
onions?
Instead of firing up the grill in
the early days of summer, here are
five burgers offered by The Blind
Rabbit that should really get your
mouth watering.
The BBQ Bacon Burger
A jack FAVORITE EATERY
JUNE 29-JULY 12, 2016
| jack 21

wide screen
JACK JACKSON’S POCKET COMPANION:
YES, CARLOS, THERE’S DANGER AHEAD
‘Wiener-Dog’
Chronicles the adventures of a Dachshund
that spreads comfort and joy as it travels
around the United States. (Released:
June 24, 2016)
Comedy (unless you are at all familiar with
eccentric director Todd Solondz’s work).
PLOT
GENRE
‘Weiner’
Chronicles the life of a New York political
“dog” who sought comfort and joy from
women via social media. (Released: June
17, 2016)
Documentary (or comedy, depending
upon your political leanings).
Greta Gerwig, Danny DeVito, Zosia
Mamet, Kieran Culkin, Ellen Burstyn.
STARRING
Former Congressman Anthony Weiner,
D-NY, and his wife Huma.
R for language and some disturbing content. RATING R for some sexual material.
The movie is broken into 4 parts; each
focuses on a different owner of the dog.
Gerwig’s character, Dawn Wiener, is the
grown-up incarantion of the beloved
adolescent heroine who appeared in
Solondz’s 1995 coming-of-age black
comedy “Welcome to the Dollhouse.”
Characters find their lives changed or inspired
by this pooch, which goes by
multiple names including Wiener-Dog,
Doody and Cancer. If you have kids or
pets, please pay heed to all signs that say
Danger!, including a Screen Crush review
titled, “Love Dogs? Don’t See This Movie.”
Weiner-Dog
Running time: 1 hour, 30 minutes
Showing: SunRay Cinema, 1028 Park St., in Five Points,
from July 8-14. (sunraycinema.com for showtimes)
NEED TO
KNOW
THE
BACK
STORY
THE
RAW
STORY
Weiner’s wife Huma Abedin has been a
long-time associate of Hillary Clinton.
In May 2011, Weiner sent a link via Twitter
of a sexually explicit photo of himself to a
female follower. After days of denial he
finally admitted he had “exchanged
messages and photos of an explicit nature
with 6 women over the previous 3 years.”
The film concentrates on the candidate’s
failed 2013 race for mayor of New York
City. After 7 terms in Congress, a second
“sexting” scandal unfolds. Explicit chats &
photos were sent by “Carlos Danger” to
a 23-year-old woman who had contacted
Weiner to express her disapproval of his
extramarital behavior. Weiner had to admit
“Danger” was his Yahoo nom de plume.
