Saturday 2 July 2016 South Brent Folk Day. South Brent Folk presents the 5 th annual South Brent Folk Day with singing, music, dancing, workshops and concerts around the village. Dance displays in the Old School car park from 11.00am -12.30pm and 2.00-3.30pm by: Heather and Gorse Clog Morris - ladies clog dancing side Bradninch Millers Morris – mixed side dancing Cotswold, Border and Molly traditions Harberton Navy – mixed Cotswold Morris side Food in the Old School car park by 'Crumbs and Cuppa' from 11.00am Pub session for musicians in The Oak and sing-around in the Pack Horse from 11.30am into the afternoon Afternoon Concert with Tricia Moore, Ben Campbell and John Connor at 2.00pm in the Old School Hall. Doors open at 1.30pm; Tickets £6: Inspired by the stories of mermaids and giants which abound in Cornwall, as well as the history and tales of tin and copper mining on both sides of the Tamar Valley, Tricia Moore has a growing collection of self-penned and other songs as can be heard on her CD 'Sail Away'. She frequently appears throughout Cornwall and West Devon and is also a regular at 'Folk on the Moor'. Singer-songwriter Ben Campbell originally from Tyneside but adopted Devon 40 years ago and now co runs the 'Folk on the Moor' club in Lee Mill. With a strong guitar style and earthy voice, his own songs evoke Dartmoor and the surrounding area as well as some traditional material from his native north east. His CD 'Songs of lost skies' features accompaniments by the Lakeman family. Singer/songwriter, John Connor, originally from Liverpool and long time resident at Bromsgrove Folk Club, is now also a regular contributor to 'Folk on the Moor'. Poetry competition, around the theme of 'Moor Weather' to be judged by 'Moor Poets' Susan Taylor and Simon Williams. The evening Folk Concert at 7.30pm (with Reel Ale bar) in the Village Hall has a national line up: Snob Hill family (Chris Richards, Claire Richards, Alex Richards & Jim Flanders) a capella folk group from Cornwall. Devonbird (Kath: Lead Singer, penny whistle and guitar; Rob: Guitar; Sophia: Fiddle) are an Exeter based band who were Southwest Music Awards' 'Best Folk Act' finalists in 2013 and have brought an exciting new sound to the Devon folk scene and beyond. The trio combine foot stomping jigs and reels with haunting ballads and songs and their albums 'Turning of the Year' and 'Hangman's daughter' and live performances have attracted great reviews. and Sunjay picked up the guitar when he was just 4 years old and hasn’t put it down since. With his guitar picking wizardry, he is one of the rising stars on the folk, blues and acoustic circuit. His third album 'Sunjay' featured him collaborating with some great guest musicians and his new album, 'Black and Blues', is a collection of blues standards revived in classic acoustic folk-blues. What’s on in Brent – July2016 and onwards Updated: 01/07/2016 Friday 8, Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 July 2016: The biennial St Petroc's Flower Festival: the festival show ‘Magical Musicals’ will be open 10.00am to 6.00pm on Friday and Saturday and 10.00am to 4.00pm on the Sunday. The church will be filled with a riot of theatrical colour from 21 displays depicting famous and less well known musical shows and the weekend will finish at 4pm on Sunday with a short celebratory concert by the ladies singing group SASS. Refreshments will be served in the Church Room. Admission free, but donations will be welcome in aid of Safebreaks Holidays – a local organisation providing holidays, activities and clubs for young people and vulnerable adults with additional needs. Saturday 9 July 2016: South Brent Radio Hour from 3-4pm there will be a new one hour South Brent Community Radio programme of items and soundscapes. It will be pre-recorded & broadcast on Soundart Radio and broadly themed 'Folk' to include local traditions, tales and folk arts in the widest sense. Recorded contributions are invited - Either leave a labelled USB stick at artworks or send via Dropbox/We Transfer to: radio@sustainablesouthbrent.org.uk. South Brent Village Hall Cinema: Sunday 10 July 2016 Bridge of Spies (2015) : German-American historical drama thriller, directed by Steven Spielberg. Based on the 1960 U-2 incident during the Cold War, the film tells the story of lawyer James B. Donovan (Tom Hanks), who is brought in to defend Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance), a captive Soviet KGB spy held by the United States. Donovan is then recruited by the CIA to negotiate the release of Francis Gary Powers (Austin Stowell), the pilot whose U-2 spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union in exchange for Abel. Also starring Amy Ryan as Mary Donovan and Alan Alda as Thomas Watters Jr., Donovan's associate. Subsequent provisional Village Hall Cinema dates in 2016: Saturday 17 September; Saturday 19 November.
