Giant otter, Peru<br />
I remember my first encounter<br />
with a giant otter family vividly.<br />
It was in September 1998,<br />
in southeastern Peru, while<br />
making our way up a small<br />
tributary of the Madre de Dios<br />
River. We rounded a curve...<br />
and there they were. Five giant<br />
otters surged towards us from all<br />
directions, one uttering a harsh,<br />
wavering scream. Suddenly, the<br />
whole family let loose a burst of<br />
sound. The noise at such close<br />
quarters was stunning and sent<br />
shivers down my spine.<br />
