Lockport expands Dellwood Park fireworks display
Amanda Del Buono
Freelance Reporter
Although many Lockport
families brought blankets
and lawn chairs to Dellwood
Park Sunday, July 3,
for the Independence Day
Fireworks Show, Lockport
residents Sally and Rob
Cronholm experienced the
show from a different point
of view.
The couple has lived in a
house that borders the park
for the past 25 years and invited
their friends and family
to watch the show from their
backyard.
“We’ve been here for 25
years, and they’ve always
had the show off the hill,”
Sally said. “It’s absolutely
wonderful to see the park
full.”
Hosted by the City of
Lockport and the Lockport
Township Park District, the
annual fireworks show was
the largest in several years.
Jodi Herman, administrative
assistant for the City
of Lockport, said the show
has been produced by a new
contractor the past three
years and subsequently has
increased in size.
“When [the contractor]
started the first year, it was
a good show,” she said. “But
we doubled the budget as
the years went on, and he
increased the number of fireworks,
and he times them really
well.”
Herman said the event
likely saw record attendance.
“Based on the feedback
we’ve received [so far], it
was a great show, and we’re
really happy about it.”
The Cronholms also had
a multitude of family and
friends gathered to watch the
show this year.
“We never know who’s
going to show up,” Rob said.
“We tell them it’s first-come,
first-serve on parking in the
driveway.”
They said that although the
fireworks show is a relatively
large event, it’s never been a
hassle.
“What’s really cool is that
you see all the hundreds of
people here, and come tomorrow
morning at about 8
a.m., you won’t be able to
tell they were all here,” Rob
said.
Denise and Michael Bonome
moved to Lockport in
2008 and have made the fireworks
show their go-to for
the past three years.
Arriving early, the two set
up their lawn chairs behind
their open hatchback and
spread a blanket between
them.
“It’s close and convenient,
and it’s very open,” Denise
said.
Although it’s a tradition
for many, the show still attracts
new community members.
Jen and Kevin Suchocki
said that although their family
has lived in Lockport for
five years, this was the first
year it came to see the Lockport
show.
“Last year, we went to the
Joliet show,” Kevin said.
“We thought we’d like to try
this one.”
Their 2-year-old, Logan,
waved a wand made of
glow sticks as he ran in circles
around his parents and
4-month-old brother, Tyler.
Full of energy, he smiled and
greeted anyone who passed
while he waved his glowing
wand in his or her direction.
Jen held Tyler and yelled
to Logan to come to sit together
and watch the show
as the fireworks exploded
into the air.
The Garcia family watches the fireworks together Sunday, July 3, at Dellwood Park.
Fire causes damage to
roof, attic of unoccupied
Lockport Township home
Elissa Chudwin, Editor
From June 30
A structure fire reported Thursday, June 30,
at an unoccupied Lockport Township home
damaged both the attic space and the roof.
The Lockport Township Fire Protection District
responded to reports of a structure fire
around 11:15 a.m. at 2132 California Ave. in
Fairmont, according to an email sent the same
day by Fire Chief Dave Skoryi.
The fire was contained to the attic of the
single-story home, but it did burn through the
roof, Skoryi wrote. No injuries were reported,
and the house appeared to be abandoned and in
disrepair, Skoryi added.
The fire remains under investigation, according
to Skoryi.
Longtime Lockport detective,
school resource officer retires
Bill Sheehan honored
for dedication as an
officer, investigator
JON DEPAOLIS
Freelance Reporter
For more than two decades,
Detective Bill Sheehan
was on the case when
a serious situation arose in
Lockport, as a member of
the City’s police department.
There was a reason for
that, according to Deputy
Chief Ron Huff, who has
worked with Sheehan for the
past 14 years.
“When something was
wrong or we had a major case
— anything that was even a
little bit sensitive — it landed
on Bill Sheehan’s desk,” Huff
said. “Probably the best way
to describe [Sheehan] is that
he has been one of the most
thorough and knowledgeable
officers we’ve had.”
Sheehan retired Friday,
July 1, from the Lockport
Police Department.
Sheehan, who grew up in
Darien and now lives in Joliet,
graduated from Western
Illinois University in 1987
with a degree in law enforcement
administration.
“Like every young person
— and it’s kind of corny —
but you want to help people,
and this would be the profession
to help people,” he
said. “It’s why I got into it. I
wanted to help people.”
He said a career in law enforcement
always was on his
mind.
“My mom dug up from my
past something from when I
was 6 years old, and it was [a
paper] asking what I’d want
to do when I got older,” he
said. “I said ‘policeman.’”
Sheehan worked for the
Lockport Police Department
his entire career, which primarily
was spent in investigations
but also included
time at Lockport Township
High School as a school resource
officer.
Sheehan described LTHS
as a “city within a city.”
“You’ve got all those people
in there during the time
that you are there,” he said.
“The staff was fantastic.
They really are wonderful
people. I got to know them
and befriend a lot of them.
They made my job a lot
easier being as friendly and
helpful as they were.”
The staff at LTHS also appreciated
Sheehan.
“Bill is a terrific person and
always put safety as a priority
at LTHS,” stated East Campus
Principal Dennis Hicks
in a statement provided by
the school. “While serving
in his role as a police officer
at LTHS, he was always concerned
about our students and
staff and their well-being.
“Bill did have a great impact
at LTHS — first as a
dean, and then as our first
school resource officer.”
That work came easy to
Sheehan, and he enjoyed it.
“I liked working with
young people,” he said. “I
have a rather large family —
eight brothers and sisters and
40-plus nieces and nephews
— and working with young
people is rather easy for me.”
But Sheehan spent more
time — about 22 years —
working investigations for the
department. Of the cases that
stood out, he pointed to several,
including the 2007 murder
of 16-year-old Kaylor Spells,
who was found in Dellwood
Park. Andrew Morrow was
later arrested, charged and
pled guilty to the crime.
Lockport Police Detective Bill Sheehan looks at a pile of
“That was a big case that
we worked,” Sheehan said.
“But there also was a shooting
up in the Broken Arrow
area, and it took us a long
time, but we ended up catching
the offender. He’s doing
17 years in the Department
of Corrections.”
He also worked with the
Will County Major Crimes
Task Force on a few homicide
cases.
“It takes a unique individual
who can compartmentalize
those feelings and still
be effective in interrogating
people who have done some
pretty bad things,” Huff said
of Sheehan. “With him leaving,
it leaves a hole in the department
that we’re going to
do our best to fill.
“He’s been one of our most
effective investigators that
we’ve had, so that’s a lot of experience
and knowledge walking
out the door that we’re going
to work hard to fill.”
Sheehan also grew with a
community that was much
different when he started.
“Back in the late ‘80s, it was
rather small,” Sheehan said of
Lockport. “There was nothing
this side of Farrell Road, and
that’s as far as we went. The
high school was a heck of a lot
smaller, and the subdivisions
across from the high school
weren’t even there.
“I think Farrell Road was
a gravel road, so things
changed rather quickly.”
When he began, Sheehan
said there were about 12
police officers in the department.
“We’d have three guys per
shift and that’s it,” he said.
Sheehan said he plans to
take the rest of this month to
play some golf and go boating.
After that, he plans to
join his family’s business.
“I’m going to make July
my month,” he said.
But before he ended his
27-year career, he stopped
by the high school and the
Will County State’s Attorney’s
office to say goodbye
to the people he’s worked
with over the many years.
“It’s tough, but it was
time,” he said.
Fairmont School District 89 Board of Education
New interim superintendent, interim business manager selected
Elissa Chudwin, Editor
Fairmont School District
89 Board of Education selected
its interim superintendent
and interim business
manager Thursday, June 30,
at a special meeting.
The Board of Education
voted 5-0 to approve a contract
employing Lela Bridges
as interim superintendent
at a per diem rate of $835
for no more than 100 days.
The board also voted 5-0 to
approve a contract employing
Teri Shaw as interim
business manager at the per
diem rate of $650.
Board member Charles
Travis was absent from the
meeting.
Although Bridges and
Shaw are new to the community,
both have extensive
experience as educators and
administrators.
Bridges replaces former
Superintendent Sonya
Whitaker, who resigned
June 17 after being employed
with the district for
six years.
Bridges’ career in public
education spans 38 years,
she said. She has served in a
variety of roles, including as
a teacher, dean of students,
principal, assistant superintendent
and superintendent.
Since her retirement in
2010, she has served “three
tours” as interim superintendent,
she said. She most recently
was employed at West
Harvey-Dixmore School
District 147.
Bridges said she is looking
forward to becoming
involved in the community
and has enjoyed meeting the
board members.
“I’ve never worked in
Will County, so this is a new
experience for me,” she said.
Bridges added that she has
yet to set any goals for the
district.
“At this time, it’s premature,
because I really want
to spend the next few weeks
getting to know the district,
getting to know the community,
getting to know
the staff, looking at what’s
working and what needs to
be improved, and taking it
from there,” she said.
Shaw takes the place of
former interim business
manager David Holm, who
was hired in 2015 and left
the district this past month.
For the past eight years,
Shaw was the superintendent
and business manager
of Morris Elementary
School District 54.
Shaw said she initially
interviewed to be interim
superintendent but was offered
the interim business
manager position. She is interested
in becoming a part
of District 89 because she is
familiar with the Lockport
area and felt her skill set
would allow her to have a
positive impact on Fairmont
students, she said.
“When you’re in education,
at the end of the day,
it’s all about how to have a
positive impact on student
achievement,” she said.
Shaw said the board has
prioritized that the district
administrators work collaboratively
to make recommendations
related to
the district’s organizational
structure and student
achievement.
The Board of Education
has yet to choose a board
member to replace former
Vice President Joe Ryan,
who resigned June 17.
Homer Township Professional Firefighters petition for referendum
ELISSA CHUDWIN, Editor
The Homer Township
Professional Firefighters
union is advocating for a
referendum that would alter
how members of the Homer
Township Fire Protection
District Board of Trustees
are selected.
The Board of Trustees
— which consists of three
members who serve threeyear
terms — are appointed
by the Homer Township
Board of Trustees. If the
referendum is placed on the
November general election
ballot and passed, Homer
Township residents would
elect members of the fire
protection district’s Board
of Trustees, according to a
press release issued by the
Homer Township Professional
Firefighters.
The union believes an
elected fire protection board
would allow residents to
gain control of their tax dollars
and become involved
with public safety policies,
the release said.
Union president David
Curtis said shifting to elected
trustees would allow for
a better partnership between
the union and the trustees.
“We feel that we’re going
to have a better level of
cooperation, better working
relationship,” he said.
Curtis said the union previously
has considered the
referendum and spent more
than a year conducting research
to determine if the
shift is what is best for the
department.
After speaking with residents
and other local fire
protection districts, the
union determined the pros of
the referendum outweigh the
cons, he said.
“There was a push and
support from a lot of people,”
Curtis said.
Mark Lobes, secretary of
the Homer Township Fire
Protection District Board of
Trustees, said the board has
not taken a stance on the referendum,
but there are concerns
that it is being led by
the union, rather than Homer
Township residents.
He said the Associated
Fire Fighters of Illinois previously
has supported statewide
legislation that mandated
trustees be elected to
fire boards.
“The board believes it is a
direct response to legislation
that failed in Springfield,
and they’ve received direct
orders from AFFI to collect
signatures in their respective
districts,” he said.
Curtis said the referendum
is not a response to any recent
legislation, and AFFI
did not tell the union to circulate
petitions.
“It’s been a long time
coming,” he said. “We have
looked into this and done
research on it for well over
a year. We have made attempts
to address issues, and
they did not address our concerns.”
Associated Fire Fighters
of Illinois President Pat
Devaney said Homer Township
Professional Firefighters
made the independent decision
to petition for the referendum,
which also is unrelated
to recent legislation.
He added that the AFFI,
which supports 220 locals
throughout the state, supports
the union’ s decision
because it gives voters a
sense of accountability.
“To have [trustees] be insulated
from people they’re
serving doesn’t make any
sense,” he said.
If the referendum is added
to the ballot and passes,
elected officials would serve
six-year terms, according to
Lobes. Although the extended
terms could be beneficial,
he believes electing officials
could be detrimental to the
fire protection district, he said.
Because trustees are appointed
to the board, they
do not have to campaign or
maintain a political agenda,
he said.
“Our goal has always been
safety first, response times
and making the organization
more efficient,” Lobes said.
For the referendum to
appear on the ballot, 1,200
signatures must be collected,
turned into the Homer
Township Board of Trustees
and verified by the Township
secretary.

Students utilize recycled materials at Camp Invention
Max Lapthorne
Assistant Editor
It was a balmy summer afternoon,
the halls of Hadley
Middle School still buzzed
June 29 with the sound of
students.
Several classrooms were
packed with Homer School
District 33C students participating
in Camp Invention,
a weeklong camp held
June 27-July 1 designed to
develop students’ criticalthinking
skills in the areas
of science and technology,
according to its website.
This was the third year the
district participated in the
nationwide camp and was
the second year that Jeanine
Arundel, Homer 33C dean
of students/gifted program
coordinator, directed it.
Camp Invention ran from
9 a.m.-3 p.m. all week, giving
the 65 Homer 33C students
entering grades 1-6 a
school-like experience in
the heart of summer.
“It keeps the students engaged
in learning,” Arundel
said. “They have fun,
and they invent, and they
do things in a different way
than they get to do in school
typically.”
Each day, the students
rotated to four different stations
that contained activities,
such as constructing a
miniature solar-powered
cricket robot, learning how
to make slime and taking
apart old electronics to learn
how they work. The specific
activities varied by day, but
the overarching theme of the
camp was using imagination
to make things out of recycled
materials. There was an
entire classroom dedicated
to storing the recyclables
the students brought for use
during the camp.
“At home, who lets their
kid smash and take apart old
electronics?” Arundel said.
Taking apart various electronic
devices was a favorite
amongst camp-goers. Evelyn
Morack will be a fourthgrader
at Butler School in
the fall and attended Camp
Invention for the first time
this year.
“When my mom told
me that they were going to
be doing the take-aparts,
I wanted to know what
was inside of everything
and how it made it work,”
Morack said.
There were old VCRs,
DVD players and remote
controls busted open with
their wiry guts exposed,
strewn about the tables in
the Hadley cafeteria for
Morack and her classmates
to explore. Many students
were surprised by the
amount of wiring in something
as simple as a remote
control, Arundel said.
Aiden Nolting, a soonto-be
sixth-grader at Hadley,
has attended all three
Camp Inventions hosted
in Homer, and glimpsing
inside the inner workings
of different electronics is a
major reason why.
“It’s really fun every single
year,” Nolting said. “I
learn a bunch of different
parts of machines.”
Four Hadley teachers
served as instructors for the
camp, each with their own
classroom that served as the
stations. Some local high
school students also helped,
as well as two counselors in
training.
Jr. High, was one of the
counselors in training after
attending the camp several
times when he was younger.
Kouba hopes to be a mechanical
engineer when he
gets older, so there’s no surprise
he enjoyed the takeaparts
the most. But he also
relished the opportunity to
be a mentor for the younger
campers.
“I like how I can help the
kids out more because they
listen to me more, and it’s
easier to help them out,”
Kouba said.
Camp Invention gave
participants opportunities
to build their own creations
out of recycled materials.
Students taped together old
paper towel rolls and ran
strings between cut up cardboard
boxes in an effort to
come up with creative ways
to solve problems.
“I like all the flexibility
to create things from all
the supplies that we have,”
Morack said. “[I like] being
innovative and making new
things from things like that.”
The students worked together
throughout the week,
and the lessons they learned
will be valuable as they continue
to grow, Arundel said.
“At any job you need to
know how to work with
people, so I think that’s the
big benefit,” she said. “And
I think it’s a big benefit to
the families to have them
in a structured environment
from 9-3:30 with teachers
teaching them in a way that
they’re not typically taught
in the regular classroom.”
10 Steps to a Pain-free Remodel
Make it your own.
Don’t design for your
neighbors or other people’s
perception of beautiful design.
Collect as many pictures as
possible and identify what
specifically you like about
them. Is it the color? Is it the
cabinet color? Or is it the
1. 2. 3.
layout? Etc.
Construction
services are not
the same
from one company to another.
It’s not like buying a car that
is made by the same
manufacturer. The way your
space is put together
5. 6.
is critical.
Avoid delivery
delays.
Don’t start until all items
have arrived to
the contractor.
9.
Visit a showroom.
Consult with one of their
designers and share your
ideas with them. Good
designers will guide you
through the process to
reach a coherent design.
Insist on using
trade professionals
for electrical and plumbing
work, even if you are not
obtaining a permit. This will
depend on the scope and
complexity of the project.
Don’t stress
over unexpected issues that
you will certainly run into.
Talk to your contractor and
work through them quickly
10.
and professionally. Don’t
delay your decisions because
you eventually have to
make them!
Don’t be
discouraged.
Design is an evolution, not a
revolution. It might take a
few tries to get the look and
design that fits your style.
Obtain a print-out
of the construction
schedule
to keep the project on
schedule and
7.
make sure it is
progressing on time with no
unjustified delays.
Like us on Facebook
and post your questions!
Select a one stop
shop showroom
that can provide design and
installation services. This
centralizes the
responsibilities
4.
and give
you one party or person to
deal with.
Obtain a detailed
contract
with a clearly defined scope
to avoid any financial
disagreements. Specify all
model numbers
and
allowances on the invoice.
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH
From THE TINLEY JUNCTION
American Legion event
welcomes home all veterans
After a three-year tour of
France, Holland and Germany
as an Army medic in
World War II, including a
stint under Gen. George Patton,
Rich Olund came home
in 1946, and it was not to a
hero’s welcome.
“When I came home, I
walked from Union Station
all the way to Michigan Avenue
with my duffel bag,”
the 91-year-old Palos Park
resident said. “My family
didn’t even know I was coming
home.”
That homecoming was
like a Rockwell painting
compared to what Tinley
Park’s Robert Baisa faced
more than 20 years later after
serving in the Navy in
Vietnam. Vietnam vets were
generally met with indifference
or hostility.
Decades later, Olund, Baisa
and many other area veterans
were welcomed home
properly June 25 at an event
at American Legion Post
615 in Tinley Park. There
were speeches given, certificates
handed out, free food
and music from the Antique
Cadillacs during the Welcome
Home to All Veteran’s
Celebration.
Tino Lettieri, a Legion
member, organized the event,
and he was beaming and
pointing out several guests
who served during the event.
Tinley Park’s John Joyce
was one of several volunteers
cooking meat on the
grill for the event. He has
been a Legion member for
10 years. He did not serve,
but his father, Pete, and other
members of his family did.
“It’s awesome,” Joyce
said. “We love doing this.
It’s a great opportunity for us
to give back to the service.
We’re all happy to help. It’s
a team effort.”
Fostering inventive minds
Max Lapthorne
m.lapthorne@22ndcenturymedia.com
Many of those we
revere as the most
brilliant minds
in the world’s history are
inventors.
Thomas Edison gave us
the light bulb, and Alexander
Graham Bell invented
the telephone. Those are just
two of the countless inventors
who have shaped the
world we live in today by
pushing the boundaries of
what is known and creating
something they believed
will help.
Passion for discovery and
scientific research is not
possessed by everyone, but
when it is combined with an
intelligent, forward-thinking
mind, great things can come
of it. But since these types
of individuals don’t come
along all that often, we’re
limited in the amount of
phenomenal things we can
create and accomplish. The
logical solution to this shortage
is to foster more of these
individuals by encouraging
children to become interested
in science, technology
and invention.
That was one of the goals
of Homer 33C’s Camp
Invention that was held this
past week and is featured
on Page 7. Camp attendees
were encouraged to bring
old recyclable materials and
old electronic devices from
home to be used for different
activities. The students
took apart the electronics
and learned about their
inner-workings and used
different recycled materials
to create various devices.
The camp provided a place
for students to continue
learning in the summer, but
more importantly, encouraged
them to think in a
creative and inventive way.
Most classes during the
school year do not give
students many opportunities
to really flex their creative
muscles and put their personal
stamp on new ideas.
That’s not to say these classes
aren’t effective. They
just don’t foster students’
inventive sides as much as
something like Camp Invention
does. This is important
because if children enjoy
fiddling around with gadgets
now, that could spark an
interest in engineering or
technology down the road.
In a world that is becoming
dependent on technology at
an exponential rate, having
people who are willing to
think outside of the box and
challenge accepted ideas is
vital. Sticking to the status
quo has never resulted in a
ground-breaking innovation,
so the more people we have
challenging it, the better. And
the only way for us to do
that is to get young students
excited about the possibility
of creating something that
has a profound and lasting
impact on the world. To me,
it sounds like it shouldn’t be
too hard of a sell.
It may seem like I think
the only way for someone
to make a difference in the
world is to become an engineer
or scientist, but that’s
not the case at all. If it were,
I wouldn’t be sitting here
writing; I would be in a lab
somewhere experimenting
and measuring. Anyone can
make an impact, no matter
the profession they choose,
but they must first have the
proper mindset. That mindset
is what I was discussing
before, and it often manifests
itself in areas such as
math and science.
We all want the world to
continue moving forward
and becoming a better place,
and one of the ways we can
do that is to keep thinking
outside the box and encouraging
younger generations
to embrace their inventive
sides, not suppress them.
Cruisin’ Into Lockport highlights
new cars, musicians each week
Jessie Molloy
Freelance Reporter
Several new and classic
Mustangs peppered the lineup
of 150 cars at the Cruisin’
Into Lockport Classic Car
Show, but Chip Lake’s Mustang
received the most attention.
The classic car show not
only includes a new theme
every Monday but also recognizes
the best car in the
featured category, said event
co-organizer Sarah Aspel, of
the Lockport Township Park
District.
Lake was awarded a
plaque June 27 for the 1966
Emberglow Orange Mustang
Convertible that he purchased
more than a decade
ago.
“[The judges] pick the
best one by walking around,
looking at all the different
entries and evaluating their
look, style, motor and all the
different elements of the car
to determine the winner,”
Aspel said.
Lake, of Lockport,
bought his 1966 Mustang
12 years ago and has been
restoring it as a hobby.
Although the upholstery
and body is all original,
Lake — a woodworker by
trade — has rebuilt most
of the engine. He also
has fitted the car with a
custom trim and console
he designed out of African
Bubinga wood.
“When I saw the car in
this color, I knew exactly
what I wanted to do with it,”
Lake said of the woodwork,
which matches the car’s
paint and parchment-colored
seats without any artificial
staining.
Lake said he has been
a “die-hard Mustang fan”
since he got his first 1966
Joseph Straub (right) looks at a Mustang with his 6-yearold
son J.D.
Mustang Coup during high
school. He no longer has
that car, but his current ‘66
does have a garage companion
— a bright orange
2016 coup model that Lake
and his wife Judy showed
alongside their prize-winning
classic.
“This is my everyday
car,” Lake said of the new
model. “It’s a lot more practical,
but to be honest, I’d
rather be driving the old
one, because you really
have to actively drive that
one the whole time you’re
behind the wheel.”
Aspel estimated that between
400 to 600 people
visited the car show, which
she attributed in part to the
evening’s warm weather.
Lockport residents Ed
and Kim Golob attended
Cruisin’ into Lockport and
were a testament to that
theory.
“We try to make it almost
every week, and tonight was
just perfect for it,” Kim said.
“It’s so nice out, why would
we stay at home?
“You see a lot of the same
cars each week, but I think
that’s kind of nice. It means
they like coming here and
being a part of the community.”
Kim added that there are
a handful of new cars each
week because of the changing
theme.
“There are a lot of Mustangs
out here I haven’t
seen before tonight, which
I love,” she said. “I used to
have one, so those are a favorite
of mine.”
In addition to looking at
the collection of cars, the
Golobs and other attendees
spent their time at the event
visiting the small vendors
nings of work for Lockport,
while Jake Suchor collected
two RBI and a walk to help
lead the offense.
As is typical in summer
league baseball, both teams
have rosters with upwards
of 30 players in an effort to
evaluate as many players
as possible. Lockport even
divided its roster into maroon
and white teams, with
the squads alternating each
game. The white team was
responsible for the win over
Andrew, while the maroon
team claimed a victory over
Palatine the day before.
“It gives us a chance as
coaches to see who’s standing
out, and to help other
guys who need the help,”
Satunas said.
While the goal in the summer
is still to win games,
both Satunas and DeHaan
agreed that evaluating players
and giving them an opportunity
to showcase their
skills is of the utmost importance.
The tournament, which
also featured Lincoln-Way
West and Marist, not only
gave players a chance to
trade in their aluminum bats
for classic wood but also
helped them develop their
skills while competing.
“It’s been a competitive
tournament with six quality
high school programs,” Satunas
said. “Being able to put
them in a competitive environment,
that kind of helps
them thrive.”
Lockport went on to lose
to Andrew 8-1 June 29 in the
semifinal game, while the
Thunderbolts were crowned
tournament champions after
a 6-2 victory over Lincoln-
Way West in the championship
game later that night.

Lockport Vipers defeat MP Express
Chris Walker
Freelance Reporter
The 12U Lockport Vipers
started strong and finished
stronger during its 14-9 victory
over MP Express June
24 in the Lockport Lockdown
Tournament.
The Vipers first five batters
crossed home plate in the top
of the first inning, and relief
pitcher Carter Peetz sent the
Express down in order in the
final inning.
“One thing about this team
is we come from behind and
always battle back, but this
time we didn’t need to do
that,” Vipers coach Pete Scaramuzzo
said. “This time we
had the lead, but you never
know in a tournament like this
when it’s pool play and teams
are kind of saving pitchers.”
Brothers Max and Justin
Knezevich walked, and
Wade Welke reached on
an error to load the bases
to start the game. Brandon
Young followed with
a two-run single to make it
2-0 before Peetz delivered a
run-scoring single, and Joey
Scaramuzzo drove in a pair
with a hit of his own.
“It’s big to get a start like
that,” Scaramuzzo said. “But
they came back against us
and kept it close.”
Lockport (34-12-1) began
to pull away in the third inning,
extending its lead to
10-3 on a two-run single from
Jake Ferkaluk and an RBI single
from Chase Eggert.
MP Express fought back
and scored five runs in the
bottom of the inning to get
the score to 10-8.
The Express wouldn’t get
any closer, as Thomas Hasso
delivered a timely two-run
triple in the top of the fifth.
Hasso smacked the ball all
the way to wall in center
field. Both runners scored,
and Hasso also advanced
to home plate on an errant
throw into the infield.
“That felt very good,”
Hasso said. “With two outs
I wanted to make sure we
got some insurance. That’s
something coach Pete talks
to us about a lot.”
Up by five to start the final
inning, Peetz shut down any
possibility for the Express
to continue the momentumswinging
game. The Express
went down in order, as the
final batter struck out.

Team 22: baseball
The staff of 22nd Century Media chose the best baseball student-athletes — based on coach
recommendations and player statistics — in its seven-town southwest suburban coverage area
to place on one super team. This team is made up of players from Lincoln-Way Central, Lincoln-
Way East, Lincoln-Way North, Lincoln-Way West, Providence Catholic, Andrew, Tinley Park, Lockport
Township and Sandburg high schools.
—Compiled by 22nd Century Media staff
FIRST TEAM
P: Kevin Lane, junior,
Sandburg
8-0, 1.5 ERA, 60 K.
All-SWSC Blue. It is
hard to argue with
Lane’s numbers this
past season, as the
hurler went undefeated,
amassing a ridiculous
number of strikeouts on
the season.
P: Tyler Zarembka,
junior, Providence
7-2, 1.62 ERA, 36 K.
The Celtics’ Zarembka
and Connor Hilty
were practically
interchangeable this
season, but Zarembka
took a slight advantage
in ERA and strikeouts.
C: Cody McArthur,
junior, Tinley
.422, 37 RBI, 31 R, 14
doubles, 3 HR, 17 BB.
McArthur’s hot bat and
play behind the plate
helped the Titans to
the best regular season
record in the school’s
history.
1B: Jackson Dvorak,
senior, Providence
.368, 9 doubles, 34
RBI, 20 R. All-CCL
Blue. On a state
championship team
stacked with talent,
Dvorak still found a way
to stand out with a solid
bat and defense on the
diamond.
2B: Mike Madej,
senior, Providence
.446, 17 doubles, 30
RBI, 45 R. All-CCL Blue.
Committed to Purdue,
Madej only improved
his already stellar
junior season numbers
and played an integral
infield role in the
Celtics’ state titles.
SS: Ben Troike, senior,
LW North
.359, 15 RBI, 33 R,
.565 SLG. All-SWSC
Red. The Phoenix
leadoff hitter is
committed to the
University of Illinois
after a stellar final
high school season.
3B: Ryan Hastings,
senior, LW West
.407, 12 doubles, 24
RBI, 25 R, 10 BB, .659
SLG. All-SWSC Red.
Hastings had a big bat,
but he was just as big
on defense. He also
earned a full academic
scholarship to the
University of Alabama.
OF: Cam Post, junior,
LW Central
.421. All-SWSC Red.
Post led the Knights in
both RBI and doubles,
as well as being the
most versatile player
on the roster, playing
catcher, third, outfield
and designated hitter
this past season.
HONORABLE MENTION
OF: Matt Waznis,
senior, Providence
.316, 8 doubles, 4
HRs, 42 RBI, 27 R.
Waznis was another
key player in the Celtics
state championship
squad, with a powerful
bat and bombastic
RBI numbers on the
season.
OF: Nick Figus, senior,
LW North
.398, 12 doubles, 18
RBI, 29 R, .551 SLG.
The Phoenix outfielder
posted big numbers
in his final high school
season to help the
Frankfort program end
its run on a positive
note.
DH: Colin Kelly, junior,
Tinley
.500, 20 RBI, 38 R,
10 doubles, 15 SB. In
a strong year for the
Titans, Kelly’s bat rang
out most often. He
also proved a danger
when stealing bases,
and went 4-1 with a
1.9 ERA as a pitcher.
P: Ben Davis, junior, Lockport; Connor Lowman,
junior, LW West.
IF: Colin Winston, senior, Andrew; Joey McGuire,
senior, Lockport; Matt Monahan, senior, LW
West; Brandon Skopick, senior, LW East;
Connor Callaghan, senior, Andrew; Mike Carey,
sophomore, Andrew; Gavin Lovesky, junior,
Lockport; Eric Papierski, junior, Sandburg, Tom
Szczasny, senior, LW North.
SECOND TEAM
P: Connor Hilty, senior,
Providence
7-2, 1.83 ERA, 32 Ks.
P: Ryan Gabriel, junior,
Lockport
6-1, 2.04 ERA, 32 Ks.
C: Ben Zordani, senior, LW
West
.390, 12 doubles, .620
SLG, 26 RBI. All-SWSC
Red.
1B: Hunter Smith, senior,
LW East
.386, 3 HR, 27 RBI, 17 BB.
All-SWSC Blue.
2B: Anthony Cocco, senior,
Lockport
.348, 11 doubles, 32 RBI,
.600 SLG. All-SWSC Blue.
SS: Branden Comia,
sophomore, Sandburg
.351, 11 doubles, 23 RBI,
8 SB. All-SWSC Blue.
3B: Zack Pych, senior,
Providence
.378, 9 doubles, 23 RBI,
Porters baseball defeats Thunderbolts in pool play
Lockport evaluates
large roster during
summertime games
Max Lapthorne
Assistant Editor
The satisfying cracking
sound of a wood bat connecting
with a baseball is usually
reserved for Major League
Baseball stadiums, but on the
night of June 28, it was audible
throughout Edward Flink
Field in Lockport.
The host Porters brought
the lumber in a six-inning,
12-2 defeat of Andrew in
both teams’ final pool play
game of the 2016 Lockport
Porter Summer Classic Wood
Bat Tournament. The game
wasn’t in doubt for long, as
LTHS staked claim to a commanding
lead in the bottom
of the first inning after Zach
Pytlewski tossed a 1-2-3 top
half.
Following a walk and a
groundout, eight consecutive
Porters reached base, and
the Thunderbolts were staring
at a 6-0 deficit in the first
frame. The early rally did not
include any extra-base hits,
as Lockport played small
ball by spraying line drives
around the diamond and taking
extra bases.
“I really liked our aggressiveness,
not only at the plate
but also on the basepaths,”
Lockport coach Andy Satunas
said. “I thought the guys
were looking to take the extra
90 feet every time, and that’s
something that we’ve been
spending a lot of time preaching
to them this summer.”
Steven Salvino fields a ball for the Porters against Andrew
June 28 in the 2016 Lockport Porter Summer Classic Wood
Bat Tournament at Edward Flink Field. Paul Bergstrom/22nd
Century Media
For Andrew, the defeat to
the Porters was the second
game of the day, as the Thunderbolts
finished up a 12-3
win over Chicago Christian
just before taking on the tournament’s
host. Andrew coach
Dave DeHaan saw his team
come out flat after an impressive
showing in their first
game and wasn’t happy with
the way the decisive first inning
took shape.
“We allowed six runs,”
DeHaan said. “I think we had
three or four walks and two
or three errors, so we’ve got
to come out better than that.
Give them credit; they hit the
ball hard, and we’ve just got
to be better. That first inning
kind of sets the tone for the
game.”
Andrew pitcher Jon Zaghloul
came in after the
Lockport lead ballooned to
six in the first inning, and
he was able to stem the tide
by inducing a ground ball
double play to end the early
rally. He finished the night
giving up two runs in three
and two-thirds innings of
work and kept his team in the
game. But the only offense
the Thunderbolts could muster
came in the third inning,
when the team took advantage
of two singles and an error
to cut the lead to 6-2. But
an impressive sliding play
by Lockport third baseman
Steven Salvino helped limit
the damage, and Lockport’s
offense remained relentless
throughout the game.
“We like to use those ‘A’
words a lot — like attacking
and aggressive — to get
these guys up to speed that
are coming up to varsity
baseball,” Satunas said. “I’m
happy where they’re at.”
The game ended in the bottom
of the sixth inning, when
Nick Strysik (2-2 RBI) delivered
an RBI single to up the
lead to 12-2. Pytlewski gave
up three hits and two runs
and struck out two in five in-
Crush 13U take West
Suburban Baseball
League Championship
1. No. 31 for the title
The Illinois Crush
13U team had 30
wins before its
game against the
Homer Heat, but
win No. 31 meant a
championship. The
Crush beat the Heat
17-8 June 28 in the
WSBL Championship
game at Village Green
Park in Glen Ellyn.
2. A first for the Crush
Up until June 28,
no Illinois Crush
had ever won the
championship. The
2016 13U team
captured its first
crown. The team
finished with a 31-12-1
record in the WSBL to
get into three rounds
of playoff games.
3. Team MVP
championship game,
Summer league basketball
has a more laid back
approach than regular season
games, but that doesn’t
change how Lockport coach
Brett Hespell leads his team.
Hespell’s combination of
gray basketball shorts and
flip-flops may have indicated
otherwise, but his tendencies
remained the same June
29 during a 44-39 win over
Ottawa in the annual Morris
Boys Shootout.
“That’s got to be two
points!” he yelled after a
missed layup.
There was an abundance
of turnovers from both
teams, mostly because of
“I thought the guys were looking to take the extra 90 feet
squad against Andrew in a summertime tournament game
After the Porters led by
14 in the first half, Ottawa
rallied and went on a 21-6
run to take the lead. Hespell
called a timeout to refocus
his team.
“We’re just learning the
difference between playing
well and winning,” Hespell
said. “We don’t always grasp
that.
“We don’t understand
sometimes that one lapse
defensively, or one missed
block-out, or one lackadaisical
pass on offense can make
a huge difference in the
swing of the game.”
Senior Austin Ambrose
put it more bluntly.
Youth team defeats Yankees to
earn first place in championship game
RIGHT: The Lockport Boys Baseball Mustang Orioles defeated
the Yankees 10-7 to earn first place in their championship
division this past month. The team is coached by
Bryan Falat and Chris Piazza, managed by C.J. Phillips and
assisted by Ashley Phillips. Photo submitted
they caught up,” Ambrose
said.
During the final two
minutes, Lockport and Ottawa
traded baskets, but the
6-foot-3 Ambrose started the
final push for the Porters. He
was perfect from the freethrow
line and made an impressive
pass to senior Matt
Smietanski, who banked in
what proved to be the gamewinning
layup.
Ambrose has not played
for Lockport since his freshman
year. After a two-year
absence, he missed it too
much and decided to come
back, he said.
“I think I got better mentally
as a basketball player
than physically,” Ambrose
said. “When I came back
by participating in the Illinois High School Baseball
Coaches Association Summer Regional at Flink Field.
I felt like I was stronger in
that area.”
Although it’ll take time
for Ambrose to get acclimated
to Hespell’s system, Hespell
knows Ambrose’s skill
will pay off come November
when the season starts.
“He’s a difference-maker
out there,” Hespell said. “He
doesn’t always know where
to be, but he’s a presence out
there.”
“Ambrose! Switch,” senior
Patrick Cooper yelled
from the bench during the
first half.
Ambrose responded with
a subtle head nod, and the
switch resulted in a stop on
defense.
consistently putting in work
is a part of the motto ‘Uncommon’
Hespell hopes to
instill in his players’ minds.
Hespell said it’s a tribute to
former Lockport teams that
went to the state finals in
back-to-back years in 2006-
2007 and 2007-2008.
It’s summertime in Lockport,
but it is an opportunity
for that message to be received.
“You can come in the
gym and not get much done;
that’s what a lot of kids do,”
Hespell said. “You got to be
a cut above — a differencemaker.
We just label it as uncommon.
“Hopefully that translates
to these guys off the court.
Hopefully they’re not an average
young man.”
