Now, she’s planning on bringing back what she learned in summer school to her district. Elizabeth Conroy, a Lincoln-Way graduate herself, has been teaching biology and forensic science at the district since 2004. She also gave Lincoln-Way North and Lincoln- Way East students a chance to take AP Environmental Science for the first time during the 2015-2016 school year. This past spring, she applied for the scholarship to attend the REcharge Academy, hosted by REcharge Labs at Carlow University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. “I received an email about the program telling me I was eligible, so I filled out the application,” Conroy said. A total of 35 academy attendees received scholarships or grants to attend the academy, and Conroy was one of only two Illinois teachers to receive a scholarship, said Ava Buchanan, outreach and program coordinator for REcharge labs. The scholarship Conroy received in the amount of $1,000 was provided by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, a program of the federal Department of Energy. (The total cost of the academy was $1,250.) The five-day conference was held in mid-June and focused on ways to incorporate alternative energy projects and lessons on wind and solar power into science curriculums using hands-on learning techniques. “They focused a lot on Elizabeth Conroy holds a solar-powered car project she made during the REcharge Academy, a week-long renewable energy conference that she attended on scholarship at Carlow University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Photo submitted problem solving and what they called ‘MacGyver-ing,’” Conroy said. “They would give us a big box of stuff, like little solar panels and swim noodles and pieces of plastic, and tell us to make something out of it like a wind turbine.” Conroy said that while it took her a while to get used to the idea of building something without any parameters — and that is a common issue with students in the same situation — she was very happy to find she had been on the right track with her environmental science class. “For the final project of my AP Environmental Science class, I had the kids build a wind turbine out of recycled materials,” she said. “So when they had us do something similar, I thought, ‘great. I must be cooler than I thought.’” Conroy said she hopes to take some of the ideas from the conference and adapt them to her curriculum next year for her AP students. She looked forward to using small solar panels in classroom projects. Another thing she plans on doing with the information she learned at the conference is sharing it with the science teachers from District 210’s feeder schools. She was inspired to bring some of the information back to the feeder school teachers by the other attendees of the convention, many of whom were elementary school teachers. “The conference says it’s for teachers from grades [fourth] through [12th], but I didn’t expect to see so many of the younger-grade teachers there,” she said. “A lot of them talk about doing work with little circuits with kids ... People don’t realize little kids can do science too.” Conroy said she thinks the new approach being taken with the next generation science curriculums — formally known as STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) — is a step in the right direction. “These programs fit in really well with the STEM and STEAM programs that are being encouraged in a lot of school districts,” she said. “It makes a lot of sense too, because science should be creative, not just reciting set facts. “Kids are very good at thinking outside the box when we give them the opportunity, and scientists don’t just get one shot at something either, they keep adjusting and modifying experiments again and again until they get it right,” she added. “So letting the kids do that is an interesting model.”

Whom do you look up to and why? My mom, dad, sister, family and God. I look up to them because they help me and guide me and help me with things. Who is your favorite teacher and why? I like art because it is fun and you get to be creative. Religion, because you get to learn about God and get grace. What is one thing that stands out about your school? That we learn about God and learn to get more grace and to love God. If you could change one thing about school, what would it be? A longer recess and longer art and religion classes. What is your favorite thing to eat if the cafeteria (or bring for lunch)? My favorite thing that I like to eat at lunch is fruit and my Subway or salami sandwich. What is your best memory from school? When I became best friends forever with Lily Bartoz in kindergarten and when I fell asleep in phonics class in kindergarten.
