Residents ask for mulligan with disc golf course

An 18-hole disc golf 

course is coming to Tinley 

Park, but the community atlarge 

has mixed emotions 

about its arrival. 

The Tinley Park–Park 

District Board of Commissioners 

listened to grievances 

July 6 from residents 

concerning the potential 

disc golf course at its regularly 

scheduled meeting. 

Similar in scoring to conventional 

golf, disc golf is 

a game where participants 

attempt to throw a discus 

from one end of an established 

course to a designated 

goal within a set number 

of attempts. 

The board recently voted 

and approved plans to move 

forward with the creation 

of the course at Siemsen 

Meadows, 7200 167th St., 

after holding a public hearing 

on the matter on June 15 

at the Tony Bettenhausen 

Recreation Center. Tinley 

Park-Park District Director 

of Parks and Recreation 

John Curran said the district 

has already begun preparing 

for the course by purchasing 

$14,000 in equipment 

with $6,000 earmarked for 

installation costs. 

The course has been in 

the works by the district 

for more than a decade according 

to Curran; however, 

several of the meeting’s 

attendees felt their voices 

had not been heard. Multiple 

homeowners argued 

the course would destroy 

sections of the community’s 

wetlands, alter dog 

walking paths, increase 

neighborhood car traffic 

and infringe on homeowner 

“I have nothing against disc golf 

but Tinley is a big area, there has 

to be another place in the Village 

that would be more suitable.”

about potential marijuana 

usage on the course, the 

high volume of parking the 

course could attract and the 

disappearance of wildlife 

native to the wetlands. 

“When you have 64 acres 

and you want to put [the 

course] in my backyard, 

why don’t you put it on 

the other 32 acres on the 

other side?” Rhodes said. 

“You’ve got plenty of room 

just don’t put it in my backyard. 

I think everyone else 

here that’s against it will 

think the same thing.” 

Debbie Norris, a Tinley 

Park resident, highlighted 

preserving the natural beauty 

of the wetlands should be 

a priority and suggested another 

location for the course 

should be investigated. 

“The wetland is peaceful, 

and we want to keep it 

that way,” Norris said. “I 

have nothing against disc 

golf, but Tinley is a big 

area.There has to be another 

place in the Village that 

would be more suitable.” 

Curran responded to residents’ 

concerns by reassuring 

them the district was doing 

everything in its power 

to cater to their objections. 

“I think people will see 

that we will work with the 

neighbors as much as possible 

and try to make it as easy 

on them as possible, but it’s 

a park, and it’s open for the 

whole community, and we 

want to make that available 

to them,” Curran said. “We 

will take care of concerns 

and put them into effect as 

we design the course.” 

Not all Tinley Park residents 

opposed the creation 

of the disc golf course. Brian 

Borcherding, a 12-year 

Tinley Park resident and 

avid disc golf player, offered 

his support for the creation 

of the course. He said 

his son, Bill, introduced him 

and his wife, Cindy, to the 

sport over a decade ago, and 

he has enjoyed it ever since. 

He was taken aback by 

the knowledge individuals 

throughout the community 

crafted a petition against the 

disc golf course and said if 

need be he was willing and 

able to produce a petition in 

favor of the course. 

“As far as people who 

support [the disc golf 

course] I don’t think we 

were prepared for this,” 

Borcherding said. “I believe 

there are a lot of people who 

want a disc golf park.” 

Borcherding said there is 

a large contingent of disc 

golf players that would 

greatly appreciate the creation 

of a course within 

their community. He called 

the game “addictive” for beginners. 

Consolidated High School D230 prepares for new era of education

Consolidated High School 

District 230 is not taking the 

summer off, and for good 

reason. 

The district intends to improve 

the overall quality of 

education district-wide by 

implementing a new math 

curriculum and incorporating 

new technology in the 

classrooms this fall. 

The curriculum modification 

is part of the district’s 

ongoing initiative, “Successful 

Students, Successful 

Schools,” which provides all 

students within the district 

the opportunity to learn essential 

knowledge and skills, 

regardless of their teachers 

or school.

said the initiative began nine 

years ago, based on a dialogue 

between community 

stakeholders, higher education 

forecasters, local business 

owners, teachers and 

parents, as a means to determine 

what are the essential 

skills youths needed for their 

future careers and how best 

to implement developmental 

courses into the curriculum. 

Beginning in the fall, in 

accordance with the district’s 

vision for mathematics, 

incoming freshmen will 

be placed in integrated math 

in lieu of algebra. Integrated 

math is a comprehensive 

course that incorporates

said integrated math will be 

more applicable to the “real 

world” and will possess a 

higher level of relevancy and 

authenticity. She said teachers 

have been preparing for 

the transition for some time, 

and she anticipates they will 

be even more engaged in the 

learning process. 

“Teachers will be more 

hands on than your traditional 

math-solving problems,” 

Gonzales said. “We 

spent a lot of time working 

on this new way to teach 

math, where kids start with 

a problem and they come up 

with various ways to solve 

the problem.” 

In addition to improving 

the deductive skills 

of the district’s math students, 

freshmen and sophomores 

are to receive Google 

Chromebooks within the 

first days of instruction to 

take home for hands-on, 

technology-based education, 

according to Gonzales. The 

Chromebooks will be paid 

for in full by the students’ 

annual technology fee of $75 

by their senior years. District 

seniors and juniors will 

not receive Chromebooks; 

however, a select number of 

Chromebooks will be available 

in a few upperclassmen 

classrooms. D230’s Board 

of Education previously authorized 

the purchasing and 

distribution of the Chromebooks. 

“Our students will be 

ready for using things that 

they’re going to see outside 

of school once they leave 

us in these four short years 

that we have them,” Gonzales 

said. “Our teachers have 

been working really hard to 

find ways to use our digital 

resources to help kids be engaged 

in learning.”

After being encouraged to 

give it a shot, Trevor Cielenski 

is quickly making an 

impression in the modeling 

world. 

The 2015 Lockport Township 

High School graduate is 

one of seven semifinalists in 

the 2016 “Mario, Make Me 

a Model” competition. He 

was selected out of a group 

of 40 aspiring models this 

past month at the Wit Hotel 

in downtown Chicago. 

The original 40 candidates 

were chosen earlier in June 

from an open modeling call 

held at five different Mario 

Tricoci Hair Salons & Day 

Spas located in Orland Park, 

Chicago, Oak Brook, Naperville 

and Crystal Lake. 

Cielenski and the other 

six semifinalists will go on 

to participate in a training 

program starting July 20 to

Bright lights of New York 

set course for young theatre 

actress 

Cecilia Trippiedi waited 

for her one shot to make a 

splash — and did she ever 

make it count. 

The Orland Park native 

and recent Sandburg High 

School graduate has wanted 

to be a musical theatre 

performer since she was a 

little girl. While watching 

a PBS drama series called 

“Broadway or Bust,” Trippiedi 

learned of opportunity 

to earn to compete at the 

National High School Music 

Theatre Awards in New 

York City. 

It finally came during 

her senior year in the role 

of Eliza Doolittle in Sandburg’s 

production of “My 

Fair Lady” this past spring. 

Knowing that she could not 

miss out on her one shot, 

Trippiedi approached the director 

and told her about the 

national awards ceremony. 

Trippiedi put in extra time 

and made her performances 

count to earn a chance to 

audition at the Illinois High 

School Musical Theatre 

Awards. 

Trippiedi was one of 24 

students to compete in Chicago 

for the two spots that 

would represent Illinois at 

the Jimmy Awards, and then 

she was selected as one of 

the three female finalists 

who had to sing a song from 

their respective shows at the 

awards ceremony. 

“When they announced 

my name, I didn’t believe 

it,” she said. “It happened so

the board at an upcoming 

Tinley Park board meeting 

or any open meeting will 

find a new public comment 

policy in place. 

The new policy, approved 

July 5, stipulates that comments 

are restricted to four 

minutes, and each person is 

only allowed to speak once. 

In total, the public comments 

section will generally 

last 45 minutes. 

“We’re following the attorney 

general’s recommendation,” 

Tinley Park Village 

Manager Dave Niemeyer 

said. “It gives everybody 

the opportunity to comment 

within a reasonable amount 

of time.” 

In November 2015, the 

Village also began discussing 

the idea of recording 

video during open meetings. 

“We did some research 

on other communities,” 

Neimeyer said. “It provides 

transparency. It’s a way of 

giving residents a way to

a board meeting. Niemeyer 

said they were also interested 

in implementing a policy 

for the public comments 

section. In May, the attorney 

general advised officials 

to implement a section 

in the Village’s policies for 

open meetings to address 

public comments. 

Ultimately, the board 

moved to adopt the new 

policy. 

A number of people in attendance 

at the meeting on 

July 5 raised concerns regarding 

the proposed policy 

for the public comment section. 

Bill Byrns, of Tinley 

Park, said the timing of the 

matter serves as a reason to 

be concerned. 

“The problem is until 

a few months ago, there 

would what be eight or 10 

people here in the room,” 

he said. “Maybe? I know 

you want to be efficient. 

The Village Board voted 

4-1 to pay $147,500 to satisfy 

all claims. Trustee Brian 

Maher cast the lone dissenting 

vote, while trustee 

Jacob Vandenberg refrained 

from voting due to a tie to 

the contractor. 

“It puts the lawsuit behind 

us,” Village Manager David 

Niemeyer said. “We’re not 

having to put the Village 

through the unpredictability 

of the litigation process.”

around here. I want to see 

the Village get things done 

around here.” 

Byrns said the problem 

is there’s a level of distrust 

with the Village’s government 

that’s been brewing 

the last couple months. 

“It’s a matter of the timing,” 

he said. “I’m not sure 

I disagree with needing to 

have maybe a little more 

decorum. The timing right 

now… you’ve got to win 

back the hearts and minds 

of the people of the Village 

and I’m not sure that that’s 

the right way to go about it.” 

Niemeyer said the measure 

is hoped to maintain public 

trust and accountability. 

He said if there’s a concern 

that cannot be addressed 

during a meeting, 

people are encouraged talk 

to Tinley Park staff individually 

at another time. 

“We’re still interested 

in hearing their concerns,” 

Niemeyer said. “There’s 

certainly other opportunities 

to be heard, other than 

during a meeting.” 

In August 2014, Tinley 

officials first learned of improperly 

billing and stopped 

making payments. 

Eight months later, Trace 

filed a lawsuit alleging the 

Village failed to adhere to 

a contractual obligation. 

In it, the contractor sought 

$492,000 for extra ambulances.

Gonzales said this summer the district sent 

three of its teachers — Justin Hawker, special 

education, Stagg High School; Chris Frye, English, 

Sandburg; and Michael Geraghty, English, 

Andrew — to the International Society for 

Technology in Education’s Conference & Expo 

to learn the latest tech innovations in education. 

She expects upon their return they will be prepared 

to teach their fellow faculty members and 

assist them throughout the year. 

“[They] will have a lot of flexibility to really 

help our teachers feel supportive, so they can take 

risks and be innovative in the classroom,” Gonzales 

said. “Whether that means going into a classroom 

and assisting a teacher, whether that means 

sitting and making a plan using technology, etc.” 

Erdey said the district has been deliberate 

in its efforts to bring teachers up to speed with 

incorporating technology into the classroom in 

recent years. She said the district often has paid 

for teachers to attend educational conferences 

and more as a means to increase their knowledge 

base, produce in-house specialists among 

faculty and, hopefully, provide a higher quality 

of education. 

“We’ve been taking the slow and steady process 

so we can hit the ground running in the 

fall,” Erdey said. 

“These kids are driving 

me insane!”

The hits just keep on 

coming in Tinley 

Park. 

Less than two weeks after 

the Tinley Park-Park District 

hosted its annual Fourth of 

July celebration at McCarthy 

Park, it is time for the Tinley 

Park MainStreet Commission 

to take center stage. 

This celebration will be a lot 

less patriotic and more tropical 

as the red, white and blue 

will be replaced by Hawaiian 

shirts and Caribbean attire. 

The 18th annual Caribbean 

Beach Block Party is to 

take place Sunday, July 17, 

in downtown Tinley Park, 

and, if one were to ask Tinley 

Park special events coordinator 

Vicki Sanchez, those 

who attend the day-long 

festival are in for a treat. 

“There really is something 

for everybody,” Sanchez 

said in an interview with The 

Junction last week. “It’s a 

family friendly event and we 

have a lot of activities for the 

children in attendance.” 

Many of those activities 

for the youngsters will 

be located in aptly named 

“KidsZone,” Sanchez said. 

There, the youthful attendees 

can find inflatables, a minigolf 

course, rides, a DJ and 

a giant sandbox. All of those 

rides and attractions are free, 

Sanchez said. The only ride 

in which attendees will need 

to open their wallet for is the 

Odyssey Fun World zip line 

which costs $8 per person. 

“The KidsZone has become 

a popular attraction in 

the four years we’ve had it,” 

Sanchez said. “The fact the 

attractions are free is really 

amazing to a lot of people.” 

Those without little ones 

should have no trouble 

finding something to do at 

the party, which runs from 

noon to 7 p.m. on Oak Park 

Avenue from 171st Street to 

Hickory Street. Four bands are 

scheduled to play throughout 

the day including the Chicagobased 

Jimmy Buffett tribute 

band South of Disorder and 

the Motown band The Associates. 

Bands will be playing 

simultaneously on two stages 

— one on each end of the fest 

— to keep the party going. In 

addition to the music, guests 

will also be able to check out 

a classic car show, enjoy food 

from restaurants located along 

Oak Park Avenue and participate 

in a bean bag tournament. 

While the Caribbean 

Beach Block Party no doubt 

shows off what Tinley Park 

has to offer, its attendees 

come from all over the 

area. She mentioned the 

event draws people from 

Naperville, Elk Grove and 

Crestwood.

Lincoln-Way D210 debuts all-district marching band

Cary Ruklic was accustomed 

to the sound of Lincoln-Way 

West’s 50-somemember 

marching band, so 

when the West band instructor 

first heard the sound of 

the 320-member combined 

Lincoln-Way Community 

High School District 

210 ensemble, he was impressed. 

The district made the decision 

to combine its students 

into one district-wide 

marching band this year 

after the closure of Lincoln- 

Way North High School. 

The decision was in part to

keep friends together and in 

part to open the district to 

new possibilities. 

“Obviously, we’re in a 

pretty unique situation as 

a district, and creating this 

one band allowed us to provide 

a consistent experience 

for all the band students in 

the district,” Ruklic said. “It 

really opens the door for us 

to provide different kinds of 

experiences for the students 

that we couldn’t necessarily 

do as three groups — things 

like the Macy’s or Rose parades 

are now possibilities.” 

As four individual bands 

last year, the groups ranged 

in size from approximately 

50 members to approximately 

120, with varying 

numbers of drum majors 

and section leaders. 

In the district band, there 

are five drum majors and 

roughly three or four section 

leaders per section. Marching 

band directors are Ruklic, 

Bert Johnson, Justin Barnish 

and Christopher Mroczek. 

Madeline Wilson, one 

of the drum majors and a 

Lincoln-Way Central senior, 

said seeing all of the 

students come together has 

been exciting. 

“As individual bands, we 

have been able to do really, 

really cool things, but coming 

together, we will be able 

to make something so much 

bigger than anything we’ve 

ever been able to do before,” 

she said. “I think the 

potential we have is most 

exciting.” 

Fellow drum major and 

West senior Mitchell Alcoser 

agreed. 

“We’ve been talking 

about this group for 

months,” he said. “We’ve 

been talking about what it’s 

going to be like, what rehearsals 

are going to be like, 

how things are going to go, 

and we finally reached the 

point where we’re doing it.” 

The application process 

was different this year for 

Members of the 300-plus-member Lincoln-Way Marching

leaders. The district had students 

submit applications 

online, and it had approximately 

90 students apply, 

Ruklic said. The band directors 

then invited finalists to 

interview and selected the 

leaders afterward. 

“We didn’t want to exclude 

kids who would’ve 

had a leadership role at a 

different school,” Ruklic 

said. “We were trying to 

be as inclusive as we could 

through that process.” 

Other big differences 

with this year’s band are 

that rehearsals and equipment 

move from school to 

school, and the band’s uniforms 

had to be unified. 

“The uniforms are going 

to be awesome,” Ruklic 

said. “We’ll use the black 

pants we already have, and 

we bought white coats and 

are making a printed overlay 

with the band logo in a 

cool abstract Renaissance 

design for over the jacket. 

We’re using hats we already 

have and printing a cover 

that will go around those so 

they all look the same.” 

The band made its debut 

in Mokena’s Fourth of 

July parade. The band plans 

to compete in a number of 

shows toward the end of its 

marching season, including 

the Bands of America

Ruklic said seeing the 

students react to their sound 

and unity together has been 

one of the most enjoyable 

things about the schools 

coming together to form 

one band. 

“This is our last year with 

marching band,” Alcoser 

said of his fellow seniors. 

“To go from being a freshman 

in a band of 50 that was 

small but mighty, now into a 

band that is six times bigger 

is incredible to experience. 

After we’re done, we get 

to see what they’ll do after 

that. We’ll see the tradition 

continue on in bigger and 

better ways.”

Roslyn DeBoer does not 

rush her work. 

If something does not feel 

or look just the way she wants, 

the Orland Park artist does not 

fret, because she knows the finishing 

touch will make itself 

known when it is ready. 

DeBoer executed that same 

type of patience when waiting 

for an opportunity to showcase 

her artwork at a local venue. 

DeBoer is one of three artists 

to have their work featured at 

the fiber art exhibit through 

July 30 at the Vogt Visual Arts 

Center, 17420 S. 67th St. in 

Tinley Park. 

DeBoer said after having one 

of her pieces in an exhibit at 

the VVAC two years ago, she 

talked to gallery director Julie 

Dekker about doing a fiber art 

show with local artists. 

“I told her I just need to talk 

to someone who would put in 

the proposal,” DeBoer said. 

“And [Dekker] said, ‘You just 

did.’” 

The VVAC holds exhibits 

every month, and Dekker said 

it is not unusual to booked two 

years out. Dekker added she 

loved the idea of a fiber art exhibit 

and continued to stay in 

touch with DeBoer. 

Two-and-a-half years after 

that initial discussion, a spot 

opened up. 

This is the 20th year of exhibitions 

at the VVAC and this one, 

which opened on July 5, also 

features work from Denise Havlan 

and Joy Nebo Lavrencik. 

The VVAC is open 7-9 p.m. 

Tuesday, 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, 

11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. 

Thursday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, 

and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. 

An opening reception was 

held Friday, July 8, with all 

three artists in attendance, and 

the jazz band Nuclear Jazz 

Quarktet performed in the 

gazebo outside. Dekker said 

having the artists on hand is incredibly 

important. 

“They’ll be able to really 

talk about the processes and 

what goes into creating fiber 

art, and I think that’s so crucial,” 

she said. 

Fiber art refers to fine art, the 

materials of which feature natural 

or synthetic fiber and other 

components, such as fabric or 

yarn. It focuses on the materials 

and manual labor the artist 

puts into the work. 

There are 45 pieces on display, 

and DeBoer said there is 

a nice balance among the three 

artists. 

“I do mostly landscapes; 

Denise does very exquisite 

portraits that are all fabric and 

thread; and Joy is more of an 

abstract artist,” she said. 

Taking fiber to the next step 

DeBoer said working with 

fabrics is something that has 

been passed down from her 

great-grandmother, grandmother 

and mother. 

DeBoer, who said she did her 

share of craft shows at schools 

and churches in the 1990s, 

does not have an art degree but 

took some general art classes 

at Moraine Valley Community 

College, starting in 2009. Her 

semester doing independent 

student research allowed her 

to focus on fibers and how to 

manipulate textures, which she 

incorporates into her art. 

DeBoer said she likes to 

study photographs in nature 

and then make them come to 

life with a particular fiber, layering, 

shearing or by finding 

just the right color. 

Having grown up in the Midwest, 

DeBoer said she loves 

incorporating all four seasons 

in her work. When she goes 

on vacation, she is the type of 

person who does not have any 

people in her photographs; 

they primarily are interesting 

landscapes. She said she has 

been drawn to the beauty of

Heights and even has removed 

herself from her golf group to 

capture some images. 

“You don’t know what is going 

to trigger something,” she 

said. 

DeBoer said she does not try 

to copy the photographs exactly. 

Rather she uses them to give 

her some realism in her work 

but then takes artistic license to 

give it a fresh feel. 

“I like to work intuitively,” 

she said. “I don’t know how 

it’s going to turn out. I might 

start out layering a bunch of 

items and then it just evolves. 

Sometimes, I just hang up my 

designs and let them perk a little 

bit. I get a feeling when it’s 

right, and when it’s not right I 

just let an idea sink in.” 

Something new, something old 

With the show approaching, 

DeBoer said she had to buckle 

down and focus on finishing 

some of her new pieces. 

One of those pieces hanging 

in the exhibit is actually a 

wedding gift for her daughterin-law, 

more than five years in 

the making. 

“She’ll finally get it in August,” 

DeBoer said. 

That piece features four panels 

in the tradition of Chinese 

art painters. Her daughter-inlaw 

lived in China for several 

years during her childhood, 

and DeBoer wanted that to be 

represented in the work. In 

keeping with that traditional 

style, DeBoer said the piece 

illustrates different lines of a 

poem. 

She said there are also a few 

works from earlier in her career 

on display in the exhibit. 

This earlier work is what she 

calls “fantasy pieces” and is 

included along with her more 

traditional work using photographs 

as inspiration. 

“You get to see some growth 

for me,” she said. “And all four 

seasons are represented.” 

While there is nothing formal 

in terms of artists’ events 

during the exhibit, DeBoer said 

she only lives 5 miles from the 

VVAC, and if people are interested 

she welcomes the opportunity 

to spend some time 

discussing her artwork. 

DeBoer — who has lived in 

Orland Park with her husband, 

since 1986 — also enjoys singing 

with the Apollo chorus 

group, but art is her outlet. 

“I went to college for science,” 

she said. “But if I had it 

to do over again, I would have 

studied art and music.”

Gunther could succeed at 

that level. 

“Coaching a kid like 

Alyssa Gunther was an absolute 

honor,” Podbielniak 

said. “Gunnie is the type of 

athlete that makes everyone 

around her a better player 

and coach. It was a pleasure 

to coach such a great athlete 

and student. But more than 

anything, an exceptional human 

being.” 

The Illini finished a game 

or two below .500 in Gunther’s 

first two seasons. But 

this past spring, as she started 

all 59 games at first base, 

they went 36-23 and had a 

winning record (12-11) in 

the Big Ten. It marked the 

fifth-most wins in program 

history, their first NCAA 

Regional appearance since 

2010 and fifth overall trip to 

the NCAA Tournament. 

While Gunther’s average 

fell off some to .324, she still 

had some great numbers. She 

scored 39 runs while knocking 

in 23. She had nine extra 

base hits, including a pair of 

homers, and eight stolen bases. 

But perhaps the most incredible 

stat was that she only 

made two errors at first base 

all season, which resulted in a 

.995 fielding percentage. 

“The biggest differences 

are the speed of the game 

and the intensity,” said Gunther 

of the difference between 

high school ball and

college. “But you are also 

traveling the country. It’s a 

pretty heavy commitment.” 

While Gunther wants to 

be a little more consistent 

her senior season, she’s also 

embracing the leadership 

role for the Illini. 

“When I was at Tinley 

Park, it was more of a leadership 

role by example,” Gunther 

said. “Coach Pod would 

look for me as a coach on the 

field. We had a lot of good 

freshman [in 2013], and I 

got comfortable with that 

leadership role. 

“So now people [at the U 

of I] look up to me a lot and 

respect me. I’ve gone a long 

way to get that leadership 

role.”

with Mike Carey 

Versatile Gunther coming 

into her own with the Illini 

Mike Carey recently concluded 

his sophomore year with Andrew 

High School’s varsity baseball 

team. He is a shortstop. 

How did you start playing 

baseball? 

I first started playing baseball 

around the age of 4, and I started 

playing because my older brother 

was playing. I’ve just always been 

around baseball. 

What do you most enjoy 

about the sport? 

What I enjoy most about [it 

is] competing with my friends 

everyday and being around 

them. 

What is the hardest part 

about being a shortstop? 

The hardest part I would say is 

being the leader in the infield. 

Who is your role model? 

My role model is my dad. He 

always shows me how to work 

hard, no matter who’s watching. 

What is your favorite after 

school snack? 

My favorite after school snack 

is cheddar Chex Mix. 

If you could be a famous 

athlete for a day, who would 

it be and why? 

I’d be Derek Jeter for a day. 

He’s so well-known and [I like] 

the way he represents himself in 

front of everybody. 

If you could be on any reality 

TV show, what would you 

be on? 

I’d have to be on “Jersey 

Shore.” I mean it just always

looks like they’re having a good 

time, and they live by beach. 

And if you could be friends 

with any of those stars? 

I’d want to be friends with 

Ronnie because Ronnie’s the 

biggest one. If you’re ever with 

him, nobody would want to mess 

with you.

“All of the Lights” [by Kanye 

West] and “Money Longer” [by 

Lil Uzi Vert] 

What’s your personal motto? 

I mean this is kind of a funny 

– “save the drama for the llama.” 

One day, my mom was wearing 

that shirt. I’ve just always gone 

by it because I’m just the person 

who kinds of goes with the flow.

Adversity. 

Everyone faces it, but when athletes 

face it they often times have to 

make some adjustments. 

That’s exactly what Alyssa Gunther 

did. 

The 2013 Tinley Park graduate 

became the second Titans softball 

player to go to a Division I program. 

That was the University of Illinois at 

Urbana–Champaign. But when she 

got there, her freshman season didn’t 

work out the way she had envisioned. 

She only saw playing time in 22 

games on the season after missing the 

majority of pre-conference play with 

a hand injury. That wasn’t exactly an 

easy transition for someone who was 

the starting shortstop for the Titans 

softball team all four years of high 

school. That included First-Team All- 

State by Illinois Coaches Association 

honors her senior season, when she 

batted .555 and helped lead the team 

to a third place finish in the Class 3A 

state tournament. 

“It was tough,” Gunther said of 

her injury. “When it happened, I 

was competing every day to play at 

second base.” 

Instead, she was used primarily 

as a pinch hitter/pinch runner, with 

two starts at third base. In 11 at-bats 

on the year, she batted .091 with a 

double and a walk while striking 

out once. It was a far cry from what 

she was used to, but instead of getting 

down or upset, Gunther absorbed 

anything and everything she 

could as she sat on the sidelines. 

“It was a setback, but I stayed engaged,” 

she said. “I didn’t zone out 

during practice. I listened to what the 

coaches were saying. I got to play in 

a few games, I tried to stay positive. 

“I knew after freshman year that 

I’d really have to work at it. That 

happened during fall ball [in 2014]. 

I knew if I got going, the coaches 

would have to find a spot for me.” 

That included extra hitting practice, 

among other things. 

“I kind of broke it down more 

for hitting,” Gunther said. “I didn’t 

touch a softball for two months when 

I was hurt. So [when I got healthy] I 

had to do whatever I could to stay 

on the team. I got stronger, too, and 

it showed. I’ve enhanced my play, 

and I’ve got a lot of tools. I can bunt, 

slap and also hit. I’ve even hit a few 

home runs. That’s helped me to be a 

more consistent player.” 

Gunther knew if she could hit, 

she would be in the lineup. 

“They’d find a spot for me,” she 

said. 

The Illini did just that. But that 

spot wasn’t what she expected. After 

playing mostly middle infield 

during her softball career, Gunther 

remained in the infield. That position, 

however, was first base. 

“You have to be coachable,” she 

said. “You can’t just be a one position 

player.” 

That was something Gunther was 

not. She started all 53 games as a 

sophomore, primarily at first base, 

with four appearances at third. Her 

stats on the season? Well, she was 

second on the team with a .376 batting 

average, totaling 65 hits, eight 

doubles, four triples, a home run, 

17 walks, 44 runs, five stolen bases, 

six sacrifice flies and six sacrifice 

bunts over 173 at-bats. 

Toss in the fact that with just six 

strikeouts on the season, she ranked 

13th in the nation in “toughest to 

strike out.” She ranked third in the 

Big Ten in triples, including a conference-leading 

three during league 

games. Gunther was fifth during 

conference play in runs, seventh in 

hits and third in double plays turned. 

She also posted the 10th-best batting 

average in Illini history, ranking 

third in triples, fourth in sac flies and 

sixth in double plays turned. 

But there was more. She broke 

the all-time Illini records for runs 

scored (27) and double plays turned 

(10) during Big Ten play. She tied 

the triples record, and ranked eighth 

in batting average (.405), fourth in

hits (32), fourth in sac flies and 

eighth in total bases (45). Gunther 

also led the Illini with a .988 fielding 

percentage, during a team-best 

16 double plays. That allowed her 

to make the All-Big Ten Second 

Team, receive a Big Ten Sportsmanship 

Award and make the Academic 

All-Big Ten team. 

Not bad for someone who is listed 

at 5-foot-3 and had never played 

first base in her life. 

“I’m actually 5-foot-2,” Gunther 

admitted. “So I’m pretty short. But 

I play at a high level, and the girls 

should be able to throw to you. 

Plus, I’m pretty quick, can scoop 

up a ball and have range. 

“I had never played first base 

before, but it worked out for me. 

I love it, I’ve accepted it. It’s just

Molly Kapala has traveled 

all over the country for 

softball, except the northeast 

region. 

But now, the standout 

shortstop will spend the next 

four years in that area as she 

will join St. Joseph’s University 

in Philadelphia on 

an athletic scholarship. She 

capped off a senior career 

batting .459 with six home 

runs, 36 RBI and 44 runs 

before moving on from the 

Phoenix to the Hawks. 

“I’m beyond excited,” 

Kapala said. “I can’t wait. I 

think it’s a really big privilege 

and a big responsibility, 

but I think it shows how 

hard that I have personally 

worked to get here.” 

She began playing the 

sport at 5 years old, which 

she said was the earliest age 

to enter T-ball on her Mokena-based 

team. However, 

the commitment to take the 

game seriously started when 

she was about 10 years old 

after her travel coach said 

she could play college softball 

if she stayed with it. 

In order to stay committed, 

a passion for the sport is necessary, 

and Kapala realized 

that at a young age as well. 

“I like seeing my teammates 

get better, as well as 

seeing myself get better, and 

it’s just so much fun to go 

out and play as a team and 

work towards a goal together,” 

she said. 

That love for the game 

grew when she registered 

for high school camps during 

junior high and began 

working with North coach 

Aimee Lonigro. Lonigro had 

an impressive athletic career 

at Indiana University and 

parlayed that into coaching, 

which included a state championship 

at East in 2002, despite 

having no seniors on 

the roster. 

Even before she entered 

North, Kapala said Lonigro 

was always there working 

with her during the high 

school camps, and it influenced 

her to keep playing. 

“That’s what I looked forward 

to when I came into 

high school was playing for 

her — not just playing softball,” 

Kapala said. “She’s 

just accomplished so much, 

and I just loved her competitiveness. 

And I’m personally 

so competitive, and having a 

coach that’s so similar in that 

regard, it makes you want to 

play even more.” 

Lonigro gave her the opportunity 

be on the varsity 

team her freshman year, and 

Kapala said that move was 

vital to her career. She was 

able to learn what it is like 

on the highest level at 14 

years old, and the experience 

prepped her to be a leader 

down the road. 

“She took a chance,” Kapala 

said. “She didn’t have 

tuning in

did anyway, and that really 

improved me as a player.” 

As a freshman, Kapala 

was part of the team that 

won the school’s first regional 

championship — one 

of her favorite memories in 

a North uniform. Two years 

later, another memory was 

made, as she committed to 

play at St. Joseph’s during 

her junior year. 

St. Joseph’s spotted Kapala 

during a tournament with 

her travel team. She was 

deciding between two Division-II 

schools at the time, 

but with the Hawks being a 

Division-I program — combined 

with her love for the 

school itself — she decided 

to head out northeast. 

Her decision to commit 

junior year eased all the 

pressure going into her senior 

year so she could play 

her best during North’s last 

year. Kapala helped lead the 

team to a 16-0 start, which 

included a first-place finish 

in a national tournament in 

Tennessee in March. 

North’s season was cut 

short in the regional semifinals, 

losing 1-0 in a pitcher’s 

duel. 

“We were a very close

team, and I made lifelong 

friends through [North softball],” 

she said. “I’m going 

to miss all of them, really, 

because we were all so close. 

I’m going to miss the competitive 

spirit we all have.” 

While many would feel 

nervous about moving out 

and spending the next four 

years away from home, Kapala 

thinks otherwise. 

“I’m mostly excited,” Kapala 

said. “I’m used to traveling 

for softball already. I’ll 

be busy to miss too much at 

home, but I’ll miss the people 

and I’ll definitely miss 

the Chicago pizza.”
