At a Glance<br />

The Bahawalpur is an important district of Punjab. Its capital is Bahawalpur City. It is located to the south of Sutlej River and lies in the Cholistan<br />

Region near the Thar Desert. It is situated about 100 km from Multan, 420 km from Lahore and 270 km from Faisalabad.<br />

The district was once the capital of the former princely state of Bahawalpur, homed various Nawabs (Kings) and counted as part of the Rajputana<br />

states (now Rajasthan, India).<br />

The Bahawalpur is an important district of Punjab. Its capital is<br />

Bahawalpur City. It is located to the south of Sutlej River and lies<br />

in the Cholistan Region near the Thar Desert. It is situated about<br />

100 km from Multan, 420 km from Lahore and 270 km from<br />

Faisalabad.<br />

The district was once the capital of the former princely state of<br />

Bahawalpur, homed various Nawabs (Kings) and counted as part<br />

of the Rajputana states (now Rajasthan, India).<br />

The district is known for its famous palaces such as the Noor Mahal,<br />

Sadiq Ghar Palace, Darbar Mahal as well as the ancient fort of<br />

Derawar located in the Cholistan Desert bordering India. Bahawalpur<br />

is also located near the historical and ancient cities of Uch and<br />

Harappa which were once the stronghold of Delhi Sultanate and<br />

Indus Valley Civilization.<br />

The district covers geographical area of about 24,830 Square<br />

kilometer, extended form 71°40’ 60” East , 29°23’ 44.6” North<br />

with maximum elevation of about 461m (1512 ft.) .<br />

The district, located in the southeast of Punjab province, is 889<br />

km away from Karachi.<br />

On western side, the district is bordered with Sindh, India to its<br />

south and south east, Bahawalnagar to its north east, Vehari,<br />

Lodhran and Multan to its north, Rahimyar Khan to its west and<br />

Muzaffargarh to its north west.<br />

Approximately two-third of the district (16,000 km²) is covered by<br />

the Cholistan Desert, which extends to Thar Desert of India.<br />

The district is also home to one of the few natural safari parks<br />

in the country i.e. Lal Suhanra National Park. Saraiki is the local<br />

language, while Urdu and English are official languages used in<br />

various educational and government institutions of the district.<br />

The local economy and livelihood are mainly agriculture with a<br />

good yield of different cash crops along with production of fruits.<br />

Industrial sector is also functional and furnishing here.

Geology and Climatology<br />

Most of the areas in the district are covered by unconsolidated alluvium and sediments whereas areas closer to India are mainly deserts. The district is a part Indus Basin and can be regarded as the western extension of the<br />

Rajasthan’s Jisalmair Basin. The Pre-Cambrian crystalline basement is about 2 to 4 km deep, progressively increasing depth westward and northward.<br />

1. GEOLOGY AND CLIMATOLOGY<br />

Most of the areas in the district are covered by unconsolidated alluvium<br />

and sediments whereas areas closer to India are mainly deserts. The district<br />

is a part Indus Basin and can be regarded as the western extension<br />

of the Rajasthan’s Jisalmair Basin.<br />

The Pre-Cambrian crystalline basement is about 2 to 4 km deep, progressively<br />

increasing depth westward and northward. The evaporites (salt,<br />

gypsum and anhydrite) over the Pre-Cambrian basement have encountered<br />

in two wells (Bahawalpur East-1 and Marot-1) with mixed lithology<br />

of clastics and carbonates, followed by Cambrian clastics and carbonates<br />

sequences of Cambrian age.<br />

The district has a very hot and dry climate in summer and dry and cold<br />

climate in winters. The maximum Temperature rises to 48°C while the<br />

minimum temperature falls to 7°C. Wind and dust storms are frequent<br />

during the summer. The average rainfall in the district is 200mm.<br />

Demographic<br />

The district’s population, according to 1998 census is 2,433,091 with gender segregation of 1,278,775 Male and 1,154,316 Female. The projected population statistics in 2015 are 4074960 heads. According to 1998 census, annual<br />

growth rate is 3.08% with average household size of 6.8 heads. 6 of the total housing units were 354356 in 1998.<br />

1. HYDROLOGY (RIVER PATTERN)<br />

Bahawalpur is a fertile tract of alluvial clay where agriculture is a major economic activity.<br />

The main source of irrigation in the district is canals. Qasim Canal, Bahawal Canal<br />

Upper, Bahawal Canal Lower, Panjnad Canal and Abbasia Canal quench the thirst of<br />

Bahawalpur land.<br />

These canals are part of Bahawalpur irrigation zone, which covers a total area of 4.42<br />

million acres, including the area of Bahawalpur district.<br />

Economic Features<br />

The district’s population, according to 1998 census is 2,433,091 with gender segregation of 1,278,775 Male and 1,154,316 Female. The projected population statistics in 2015 are 4074960 heads. According to 1998 census, annual<br />

growth rate is 3.08% with average household size of 6.8 heads. 6 of the total housing units were 354356 in 1998.<br />

The district covers geographical area of about 24,830 Square kilometer, extMajor<br />

Fruits: Mangoes, Citrus, Dates and Guava. Besides pomegranate, Jaman<br />

and Phalsa are also grown in minor quantities in the district.<br />

Major Crops: Cotton, Wheat, Sugarcane, Rape/Mustard Seeds. Besides Rice,<br />

Gram, Tobacco, Jawar, Baja, Moong, Mash, Masoor, Maize are grown in minor<br />

quantities in the district.<br />

Vegetables: Onion, Tomato, Potatoes, Brinjal, Carrot, Cauliflower, Bottle<br />

Gourd are main vegetables. Besides Ladyfinger, Turnip, Matter Green, Garlic<br />

and Chilies are also grown in minor quantities in the district.<br />

Location of forests: An area of 68067.37 hectares is under forest, which is around 10.21% of the total area of the district. There is also linear plantation of 2211.94 km along the rail/roads/canals in the district. Trees grown in the area<br />

include Shisham, Mulberry, Babul and Eucalyptus. Production of Timber and Firewood is significant. Bahawalpur is located in the sub-category of Irrigated Plains (Cotton Zone) agro-ecological zones of Punjab.<br />

Bahawalpur is the gateway to the Cholistan Desert. Although the era of<br />

princely patronage is gone, it remains primarily a medieval city with elegant<br />

palaces, and colorful bazaars.<br />

It is surrounded by many beautiful spots like Noor Mahal and Gulzar<br />

Mahal, Panjand head, Dera Nawab Sahib, Forts, Musafir Khana, Museums,<br />

Shrines, Lal Suhanra National Park, Uch Sharif, Mosque, Central Library.<br />

ROADS & COMMUNICATION<br />

The district has metalled road-length of 2,579.87 Kilometers which is linked with Lodhran,<br />

Bahawalnagar, Vehari and Rahimyar Khan. M-5 Khanewal-Bahawalpur (Lodhran) section is<br />

expected to be completed in 2016.<br />

The main Peshawar-Karachi railway line passes through Bahawalpur District. The district is<br />

linked with Rahim Yar Khan, Hasilpur and Lodhran through railway network.<br />

There are three airports in Bahawalpur district.<br />

There are many sports and recreational facilities in the district including various playgrounds, golf course,<br />

squash court, tennis court most famous is the Bahawal stadium etc.<br />

The city of Bahawalpur has a rich heritage and is an important hot spot for historians as well as archeologists.<br />

Bahawalpur is known for its cotton, silk, embroidery, carpets, and extraordinarily delicate pottery.<br />

The Punjab Small Industries Corporation (PSIC) has established a Craft Development Center for Cholistan<br />

area, outside Farid Gate. Some of the souvenirs produced in the city include: Flassi, Gindi or Rilli, Changaries,<br />

Khalti.<br />
