Your Workplace and Hazardous<br />
Chemicals<br />
Chemicals and Dangerous Goods have been identified as one<br />
of the top 5 risk areas that exist within the work environment.<br />
The WHS Regulations outline requirements to support specific<br />
duties in relation to Hazardous Chemicals.<br />
Safety Data Sheets<br />
SDS documents must be available to workers for chemicals<br />
used, stored or handled in the workplace. They must be<br />
reviewed every 5 years or when chemical changes occur.<br />
An SDS includes information on hazardous chemical<br />
properties, emergency response measures, transport<br />
information (UN number, hazard class) and more.<br />
Register and Manifest of Chemicals<br />
A register must include chemical listing and current SDS<br />
documents for hazardous chemicals in the workplace.<br />
A manifest must be kept in a location agreeable and accessible<br />
for emergency services.<br />

Placards<br />
Placards must be prominently displayed at the workplace if the<br />
total quantity of a hazardous chemical exceeds the placard<br />
quantity specified in the WHS Regulations.<br />
Minimise Hazardous Chemical Risks<br />
1. Identify Hazardous Chemicals – that are used, stored and<br />
handled in the workplace.<br />
2. Review Chemical Quantities – and document specific<br />
volumes.<br />
3. Establish WHS Requirements – placard, manifest etc.<br />
4. Apply WHS Requirements – compile SDS documents,<br />
provide training, implement risk controls.<br />

GHS Classification in Australia<br />
Chemicals should be classified in relation to the Globally<br />
Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of<br />
Chemicals (GHS). Chemicals used in the workplace should<br />
also be easily identifiable using the GHS label system.<br />
Globally Harmonised System (GHS) is coming to Australia.<br />
After 31 December 2016, workplace chemicals must be<br />
classified according to the GHS and relevant container labels<br />
and SDS must be updated. Seton will continue to publish more<br />
information on GHS changes as they arise.<br />

Fire Equipment Inspections<br />
All fire extinguishers require inspection at 6 monthly intervals.<br />
The testing dates are to be recorded on a tag attached to the<br />
unit. Ensure that your equipment is maintained and<br />
emergency ready.<br />
Safety Signage Viewing<br />
Signs should be located where the messages are legible,<br />
attract attention and are clearly visible to all concerned.<br />
Signs should be mounted as close as practicable to the<br />
observer’s line of sight in the vertical plane.<br />
