Growing Foodservice Industry to Be a Major Growth Driver of the Paper Cups Market
rowing environmental concerns, awareness about hygiene and sanitisation, rising living standards as well as
the growing foodservice industry are expected to drive the demand of paper cups globally.
Paper cups are used all over the world to serve food and beverages like tea, coffee, soft drinks, instant
noodles, sweet corn, etc. Commercially, paper cups are coated with polyethylene to make them liquid
resistant and thus increase their durability. The coating also helps to weld the seams together. There are two
types of paper cups: hot and cold. Cold cups have a waxy coating on both the sides to prevent the paper from
becoming soggy. Hot cups on the other hand, have a coating only on one side and are designed specifically to
withstand the heat. The growing foodservice industry is one of the major factors that is currently driving the
growth of the paper cups market globally. Growing health concerns and the awareness about hygiene and
sanitation have also urged people to utilize paper cups in public places. Moreover, they are convenient to use
and are environment friendly due to their higher biodegradability compared to plastic or foam cups.
According to IMARC’s latest study “Paper Cups Market – Industry Trends, Manufacturing Process, Plant
Setup, Machinery, Raw Materials, Cost and Revenue” the global paper cups consumption was worth 245
Billion Units with the market growing at a CAGR of around 1.7% during 2008-2015. Due to the global
recession in 2009 and a resulting slowdown in food and beverage consumption, the paper cups market
suffered a slow growth. However since 2010, the demand of paper cups have recovered and the market has
witnessed continuous growth.
