Abraham’s Bagels and Pizza
–––––––––––––––––
NEWBURYPORT — Abraham’s Bagels
and Pizza on Liberty Street downtown was
known for its generosity.
In just the last few weeks, the popular
breakfast and lunch stop raised $1,000 for
the “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer”
Team Flaherty. It also raised $320 for the
Newburyport Elementary PTO fundraiser,
another $320 for the Immaculate
Conception School fundraiser and $425 for
the Newburyport Montessori School.
For the River Valley Charter School’s
“Families in Need Fund”, the shop, known
as just Abe’s, donated 10 percent of the day’s
sales. “Come down and try our GUAVA
cream cheese, muffins, brownies, cookies,
and more,” the invitation for the school
fundraiser read.
Now it is the community’s turn to raise
money to help rebuild the burned-out
shop and sustain the employees while it is
closed. A fundraiser will be held at 5 p.m.
on Wednesday, July 20, at the Firehouse for
the Arts, Mayor Donna Holaday announced
last week.
Two weeks ago, the quaint shop at 11
Liberty Street, known for its assortment of
bagels, cream cheeses and coffee, caught fire,
State Showcases Local Clean Energy Manufacturers
Continued from page 1
Pike head the state’s efforts
to build a nation-leading clean
energy economy.
Many of the MassCEC’s grants
pay for clean energy research.
At the Chestnut Innovation
Center the money it has paid
to the center and to its tenant
companies is creating exciting
new products, O’Brien said.
The Chestnut companies that
have received funding from
MassCEC include Resolute
Marine, an energy producing
company that uses ocean wave
technology; Blackburn Energy,
which has a device that will
produce energy from the drive
shafts of trucks, and Building
Envelope, which has an
advanced insulation product.
O’Brien hopes Pike’s visit
will lead to more investment
in companies housed at the
incubator and create more
opportunities for the state
agency to play a role in the
growth of these manufacturers.
The MassCEC will also launch
the fifth round of its program,
InnovateMass, at the center at 6
p.m. on July 26. InnovateMass
Raising Money to Rebuild Abraham’s Bagels
apparently from a smoldering
cigarette that landed in
landscaping mulch beside the
outdoor patio.
The four-alarm fire that
began at 4:15 a.m. destroyed
the shop, the Liberty Law firm
upstairs and an apartment over
the next door bakery. No one
was injured. The apartment
resident was awakened by the
fire alarms in time to get out.
Not so fortunate were some of
the law firm’s files.
“There’s a lot of work to get
through, but we look forward
to getting back in business,”
wrote Linda Garcia, who has
owned the shop for 19 years.
“We thank the community for
their continuing support - the
well-wishes and pure generosity
from our customers, fellow
businesses and organizations,
as well as a local lemonade
stand are nothing short of
amazing!”
The fundraiser, which is being
called “Fire Up Newburyport,”
will feature concerts by at
least four local bands. Lux
will perform at 5 p.m. The
Henry Welch Band will play
at 6 p.m., followed by Cup of
provides up to $150,000 in
funding and technical support.
A big step forward for the
second-stage incubator is the
shared lab space, which will have
a computer, six donated Solid
Works software licenses, a 3D
printer and a computer numeric
control machine. The CNC
machine produces prototypes,
parts and equipment for the
tenant companies. Much of the
equipment and support for the
equipment is being donated by
area companies, such as CADD
Edge, an expert in the Solid
Works software.
Merrimack Tool Co. is
donating two hours a week
to work with companies at
the innovation equipment
lab to understand how to use
equipment like the computer
numeric control machine.
The Chestnut Innovation
Center was set up to provide
an environment for emerging
manufacturing companies
to work at affordable rents
and share expertise with one
another. It currently houses
30 companies that employ 98
workers.
Joe at 7 p.m. and Liz Frame
and the Kickers at 8 p.m.
Suggested donation for the
Firehouse event is $25. There
will also be a silent auction to
raise money.
In addition, a dozen or more
local restaurants and taverns
are chipping in – much like the
bagel shop did for its favorite
charities – to give a portion of
proceeds.
The fundraiser is organized
by the city of Newburyport,
the Greater Newburyport
Chamber of Commerce, the
Firehouse and local businesses.
The Provident Bank has set up
a fund for donations to help
the shop with expenses not
covered by insurance.
Garcia said she feels
“very emotional” about her
employees who are out of
work and the community
that benefits from the shop’s
generosity.
Abraham’s Bagels was a local
institution. On many days,
particularly on the weekends,
it was tough to find a parking
place at 7 a.m. on quiet Liberty
Street as customers lined up to
buy bags of bagels.
Investigators found no sign
Some of the MassCEC
funding will also be used for
a large screen television to
showcase videos that market
the tenant companies, O’Brien
said.
He also expects Pike will be
pleased with the interaction
the manufacturers are having
with the city of Amesbury,
particularly the Department
of Public Works. MassCEC
supports municipal clean energy
projects.
Building Envelope is
identifying city buildings that
could be insulated better to
reduce energy costs.
And Blackburn Energy is
proposing to install its device
on city trucks to generate free
electricity in batteries that could
be used to power other cityowned
equipment.
In general, the MassCEC
investments are bearing fruit.
that the fire was intentional,
according to Newburyport Fire
Chief Christopher LeClaire and
City Marshal Mark Murray. .
“Mulch is a combustible
material that can be easily
ignited by improperly discarded
smoking materials. Hundreds
of small and large fires are
started this way every year,”
said State Fire Marshal Peter
Ostroskey whose department
joined Newburyport police
and fire departments in the
investigation.
“The risk is that what starts as
a small outdoor mulch fire can
quickly spread to buildings,”
Ostroskey said. “A mulch fire
can be well underway before
someone notices or is alerted
by smoke alarms or sprinkler
systems activating.”
ROWLEY - Rowley Library seeks nominations for Human Libraries - Libraries educate, inspire, and
entertain. They are full of stories and cultures and places that we can experience without leaving Rowley.
We are lucky to have people in our community like that too - People who enrich our lives as much as
all the resources available through the Massachusetts Library System and Rowley Public Library. Who
is your human library? Someone who entertains with their stories, educates with their knowledge, and
inspires with their experience and advice. In honor of our 125th anniversary, the Rowley Public Library is
honoring these unique people. Nominate someone who is part of the Rowley and/or Triton Community
Me Included is the result of the
three-year historical and spiritual
search of minister Deborah
Knowlton, as she transcribed
clergy records from the Archives of
the First Congregational Church
of Hampton, New Hampshire.
In these handwritten, primary
sources, she discovered details of
the lives of African Americans,
captured over 156 years by twelve
ministers. The records informed
Vacation all year long!
the author’s research, as she
rediscovered the names and partial
histories of over twenty-seven
African American men, women and
children of Hampton, Hampton
Falls, Kingston, North Hampton,
Seabrook, Kensington, Kingston,
East Kingston, Sandown, Danville,
New Hampshire, Amesbury and
area. Deborah Knowlton lived as
a child on a farm that straddled
the town line between Hampton
Falls and Exeter, New Hampshire.
Educated locally, she attended the
University of New Hampshire
and Andover Newton Theological
School, Newton Center,
Massachusetts. She felt the call to
ordained ministry in the Exeter
Congregational Church and has
served parishes over the last thirtyeight
years in New Hampshire and
Connecticut. She currently serves
the First Congregational Church
in Hampton. As she read through
the ancient church records during
the church’s 375th anniversary
year, she was inspired by what they
revealed. Although the history of
each parish she served was complex
and beautiful, her investigation
into Hampton’s eighteenth-century
African American members felt like
discovering neighbors she never
knew. Color Me Included is her first
book. To register please go to the
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Good for you: You’re
determined to stick with your goals and ignore those naysayers
who might try to discourage you. You’re on the right track. The
challenge now is to stay on it.
SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You’ll soon get news
that is supposed to help you with a troublesome situation. Use
your sharp Scorpion instincts to determine if the information is
reliable.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) If you learn
someone has betrayed your trust, don’t just accept it and walk
away. You need to know why that person decided to do what he
or she did.
CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A painful family
relationship problem could finally begin to heal. Be prepared to
show more flexibility than you might like. But it could be worth
it.
AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) It’s a good idea to
enhance your career skills so you’ll be prepared to accept a more
responsible position when it’s offered. A friend returns a favor
just when you need it.
PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Show that strong, steely
backbone that you usually hide, and demand to be included in
any family decision-making that could affect the well-being of a
loved one.
BORN THIS WEEK: You can be happy being alone at home.
But you also love exploring the world outside and meeting new
people and sharing new ideas.
Health & Wellness
By J. Peter St. Clair, DMD
You’ve spent months applying
to job postings that fit your
professional goals and career path.
You’ve paid for a professionally
crafted résumé and spent hours
creating custom cover letters.
Finally, after what seems like an
agonizing wait, you land your
first interview. With only days
to prepare, you gather and print
letters of recommendation, put
together your portfolio, and
purchase the perfect outfit. You
are ready. Or are you?
Responding effortlessly to
a barrage of questions and
presenting a perfect portfolio will
get you far in the interview process,
but forgetting to smile or, worse
yet, hiding your smile may cost
you the job. Today’s employers
aren’t just looking for qualified
employees; they are looking for
confident candidates who will fit
the workplace culture. Your smile
can show that you have the ability
to be a fresh addition to the team
and bring new, positive energy to
the company’s workforce. Your
smile talks, but what is it saying
about you?
When asked, human resource
specialists and headhunters
emphasize the impact your body
What’s new at your local senior
center? If you haven’t been there
recently (or ever), you might be
surprised.
Across the country, many
towns are increasing the offerings
at senior centers, making them
places we can go for more than
just bingo.
Here are a few things you
might find at your local center:
computer classes; yoga or tai chi;
low-cost or free lunch; workout
classes; guest speakers on a variety
of topics such as health, wealth
and travel; golf trips; dance
classes; help with managing
Brighter Smiles...
Smiling Your Way to a Job
language has on the success of an
interview. Your first impression is
made in fewer than seven seconds,
and your smile is one of your most
powerful nonverbal cues. In fact,
it is so powerful that it has the
ability to significantly improve
your chances of getting hired. A
sincere, natural smile shows your
potential employer that you are
interested and enthusiastic about
the job opportunity, as well as
open and engaged positively
with the information they are
conveying.
Employers want to hire
energetic and invested employees.
They want to know that the
individuals they hire will be eager
to jump into their new roles
and be successful. Your smile
can begin to communicate that
and much more in a subtle but
potent, nonverbal manner.
During an interview, your smile
tells your potential employer that
as a colleague you are stable and
confident, have a positive nature,
are interested and enthusiastic,
are easy to talk to and work with,
and are approachable and open.
These traits combined with a
convincing résumé can position
you to win the job.
Now that you know how
important your smile is, it’s time
to consider how confident yours
is. Does your oral health give you
confidence or are you constantly
concerned about having bad
breath or bleeding gums? What
about your smile’s aesthetics? Do
you hold back or cover your smile
to hide crooked, stained or worn
teeth?
Feeling more confident about
your dental health and the
appearance of your teeth can
drastically improve your chances
of landing your dream job….and
just makes you feel better about
yourself. Things such as having
your teeth cleaned regularly,
whitened, veneered, bonded or
straightened are different ways to
improve your smile. Often times
it doesn’t take much to make
