Safety Confined spaces There might be times when you will need to undertake work in a confined space. This has the potential to be particularly dangerous due to the possibility of: • Lack of Oxygen • Presence of flammable environment • Presence of toxic gasses • Protruding objects You can stay safe by: • Ensuring you have an approved PTW and Enclosed Space Entry Checklist. • Ventilating the space continuously before entry and throughout the work. • Testing your hand-held radio communications with all the teams. • Obtaining authorisation from the officer in charge that the space is safe to enter. • Never enter a confined space alone. 18 AET Marine HSSE Handbook
Safety Chemical hazards There are many chemicals stored onboard our vessels which, if not handled correctly, can cause temporary or permanent harm. These chemicals include but are not limited to: • Boiler treatment substances • Paints • Solvents • Cleaning agents • The cargoes we carry When handling any chemicals, you must read and understand the information on its potential hazard, effects and the precautionary measures to take. This is available from the relevant Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) or Chemical Safety Data Sheets (CSDS). The Master or Vessel Safety Officer will ensure that these sheets are up-to-date and readily available to you. You can stay safe by: • Paying attention to all warning signs. • Using proper PPE including goggles, gloves, coverall, safety shoes and helmet. • Reading all labels on the containers carefully. • Not assuming that the contents of unlabelled containers are harmless – if you find an unlabelled container, leave it closed, return it to the store and report it to the Safety Officer.
