Our brief<br />
Our rapid expansion over recent<br />
years has seen us struggle for desk<br />
space at our site in Newick Lane,<br />
near Mayfield. Constructing an<br />
oak framed office complex was the<br />
obvious solution, as it also allows us<br />
to showcase the buildings we supply.<br />
How was this fulfilled?<br />
The new office replaced an old<br />
L-shaped building that had been<br />
used over the years as a workshop<br />
and for storage, so we opted to stick<br />
with a similar shape and footprint,<br />
but add an additional storey.<br />
The design was developed with the<br />
intention of demonstrating possible<br />
features on an oak framed building<br />
to visiting customers. For instance,<br />
it includes all four available roofprofiles:<br />
barn-hip, full-hip, gable<br />
and gablet. It also has both oak<br />
and softwood weatherboarding,<br />
as well as traditional oak and<br />
contemporary aluminium joinery.<br />
As for all our buildings, we used<br />
traditional oak framing techniques.<br />
Frames are constructed using mortise<br />
and tenon joints, curved braces and<br />
oak pegs. It also features dovetail joints<br />
between the tie beam and eaves beam.<br />
The frame was dry assembled in the<br />
workshop to ensure ease of fit on site.<br />
What feedback have you had?<br />
The building has proved extremely<br />
popular with our customers. They really<br />
appreciate the opportunity to see a largescale<br />
oak frame showing a number of<br />
possible external features. It also allows<br />
them to see the standard of internal<br />
detailing they can expect, including<br />
exposed beams, rafters and a feature truss.<br />
