Hopedale’s well-known artist,
Raymond Andreotti will be
exhibiting his award -winning
artwork at the Rhode Island Watercolor
Society located at Slater
Park in Pawtucket, RI, from August
20 to September 15, 2016.
Without stepping outside, visitors
to the multi-level
Society’s gallery can
enjoy views of New
England landscapes,
Italy and France trips,
street life in Shanghai,
and many scenes
from his own home
town of Hopedale,
MA. Andreotti was
chosen to show his
work because of the
high quality of his
paintings and his exceptional
use of color.
Approximately thirty
pieces of his artwork
will be displayed for
viewing pleasure and
offered for sale on
gallery walls, along
with over seventy-five
pieces from his floor
display bins. Ray will
be part of a 3-person
group show, all very
accomplished artists.
Ray was born and
raised in Milford, MA and
graduated from Milford High
School in 1958. His love of
painting and drawing started at a
very early age when his aunt gave
him his first box of oil paints for
his birthday. His first award was
presented to him in the eighth
grade when he painted an oil
portrait of President Eisenhower
and won 1 st Place and a five dollar
bill. His art teachers mentored
him during elementary
and high school years. In his senior
year he was selected to create
the illustrations for the class
yearbook and graduation program.
Instead of attending art
school, he opted to apply his scientific
talents by becoming employed
at the U.S. Army Natick
Laboratories, Natick, MA, in the
science research field involving
proteins, energy, chemical protection,
and robotic automation
testing for soldier systems while
also using his artistic abilities
for illustrations. Ray retired in
1996, now devoting full time to
art. Ray’s large oil portraits of
retired principals and superintendents,
as well as a portrait of
Ray does not try to duplicate
a scene with photographic precision
but seeks to use gradations
of color and light to share
a mood with viewers.
Andreotti believes that
years of experience
have taught him to construct
scenes in ways
that lead viewers’ eyes
to the subject, which
he hopes will prompt
an emotional response.
Many individuals have
commented that Ray’s
artwork is “so soothing
to the soul.” He follows
his intuition and instinct
to freeze ephemeral moments
in a delicate wash
of colors, capturing the
changing light in shades
of gradually changing
colors. After finding a
scene that catches his
eye, he first sketches it
in pencil and adds some
colors. Ray then returns
to his studio and
relives the actual moment
when he experienced
the intangible
force that urged him to stop, look
and consu;me the wonder of the
particular moment before him.
He often photographs the same
scene in order to manipulate the
colors to match complementary
colors and enhance vivid contrasts.
Everything Ray tries to
express in his paintings is determined
by personal insight and
mood toward the subject.
“Art has offered me the experience
to meet and paint with
many great artists over the years.
I’ve taken workshops with such
nationally acclaimed American
Watercolor Society Signature
Artists as Carlton Plummer,
Mario Cooper, Don Getz and
Don Andrews. Their workshops
were quite inspiring and
extremely helpful to my artistic
progress. Since then my paintings
have won awards in many
national, regional and local art
exhibitions which helped me to
become certified for Signature
Memberships in The (AWS)
American Watercolor Society,
New York City; (NEWS)New
England Watercolor Society, Boston,
MA; (RIWS)Rhode Island
