Casey, President and CEO. “These students will go on to become our future business leaders.” Each student was selected by their school’s scholarship committee based on need, academic standing, and involvement in school and outside activities. The following graduating high school seniors from Milford and surrounding areas were each awarded a $1,000 scholarship: Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School: Jessica Castle, attending Anna Maria College; Douglas High School: Kristina King, attending Boston College; Hopedale High School: Trevor Wilson, attending University of Massachusetts Amherst; Milford High School: Maia Paterno, attending Belmont University; Mount Saint Charles Academy: Gregory Mumma, attending Bryant University; Carly Thibodeau of Nipmuc Regional High School; Northbridge High School: Patrick Sweeney, attending Worcester State University; Uxbridge High School: Madison Clement, attending Keene State College; Whitinsville Christian School: Luc Booz, attending Rochester Institute of Technology and Lilia Merbouche of Woonsocket High School. August 2016 Local Town Pages www.hopedaletownnews.com Page 7 Farm to Table Dinner in Hopedale Massachusetts farms are increasingly offering locally grown and produced foods throughout the year. Eating local supports family farms, sustainable agriculture and a decrease in carbon footprint when we produce and consume our own fresh produce rather than shipping it across the country. On Saturday, August 20, Hopedale Unitarian Parish will be hosting a farm to table dinner to showcase a bounty of locally available foods from nearby farms. A full course meal featuring Vegan and Vegetarian options, as well as locally raised meat, will be prepared and served at the church by reservation only. Michele and Tony Alves, members of the congregation and supporters of a local CSA with Long Life Farm in Hopkinton, are planning and preparing the meal with produce from their CSA and the Hopkinton Farmer’s market where Michele volunteers as a farm market manager. CSA’s are community supported agriculture programs where local farms sell shares of the harvest of their crops each year; providing CSA members with fresh produce each week from around June through October. The Farm to Table dinner will give folks an opportunity to meet the farmers Laura Davis and Don Sutherland of Long Life Farm in Hopkinton. Davis and Sutherland strive to grow nutrient dense food that bursts with flavor by utilizing organic, biological and mineral balanced farming techniques. Long Life Farm symbolizes a longer healthier life for the land, the farmer, their family and the community. Long Life Farm utilizes organic farming techniques that follow the guidelines set out in the National Organic Program (NOP) overseen by the USDA. Organic farming includes the use of compost, crop rotation and the absence of synthetic fertilizers and insecticides. Since 2013 they have been successful in achieving organic certification through Baystate Organic Certifiers. Long Life Farm offers shares in their community supported agriculture. Davis says, “I am a student and supporter of the Real Food Campaign now known as the Bionutrient Food Association. This organization is educating farmers on how to make food more nutritious. Why? For the last 100 years, the USDA has been tracking the nutrient level of vegetables and has found most vegetables’ nutrition content have declined 20-40% since 1920. 350 years of conventional farming, weather and land development in the US has left our soils deplete of the key minerals that people and animals need to get from their food in order to stay healthy. “We are striving to go beyond organic to grow more nutritious, nutrient dense vegetables that give people the minerals they need to fight disease. Vegetables that are nutrient dense also taste better and have longer shelf life. Plants that are grown have healthier immune systems and are less prone to insect damage and disease.” Come and enjoy a healthy, environmentally conscious, full course meal prepared with local, seasonal and organic produce grown nearby- and meet the farmers who make it possible.
