Council Seeks
Volunteers
The Hopedale Cultural
Council is a group of volunteers
appointed by the Board of
Selectmen. Our main function
is to award grants annually
from state appropriations to
individuals and organizations
for community projects and
events.
Additionally we organize the
summer band concerts, the Day
in the Park (September) and the
Student Art show (December).
We also sponsor group theater
trips to Boston and Providence.
We are looking for people
to join the council. We meet a
few times a year for planning
purposes. Members work on
National Park Passport
In Hopedale
Blackstone River Valley
National Historical Park is
pleased to announce a passport
program for valley explorers of
all ages. To promote local tourism
and awareness of cultural
resources of the valley, residents
and visitors are encouraged to
get out and explore with a free
Passport Book in hand. While
visiting the various areas of the
park, Passport holders will learn
about the beginnings of industry
in America, walk through the
historic mill villages that still
make up the backbone of the
region, and take advantage of
the recreational opportunities
offered by the Blackstone River.
In addition to providing a brief
description of the six areas that
make up the park, the pages of
this Passport Book include space
to stamp or “cancel” the date
and location of your visits.
Hopedale is home to two
cancellation sites: the Little Red
Shop (12 Hopedale St.) and
Bancroft Memorial Library
(50 Hopedale St.). Stamps can
also be obtained at Slater Mill,
Pawtucket, RI; Blackstone
River State Park/Kelly House,
Lincoln, RI; North Smithfield
Public Library, Slatersville, RI;
and Whitinsville Social Library,
Northbridge, MA. Passports are
available at the Kelly House,
open seven days a week.
For Hopedale residents, the
two cancellation sites in town
are ideal launching points for
a journey through time. The
Little Red Shop, which tells the
story of Hopedale’s history from
commune to corporate town,
is where Ebenezer Draper first
began the manufacturing of
loom temples. Up the street,
the historic Bancroft Library
is a reminder of the system
of paternalism maintained by
the Draper Corporation. Built
in honor of the late Sylvia
Bancroft, this library was given
to the people of Hopedale in
1898. Both sites are connected
to the larger story of industry,
Our Roofs will weather the storm!
development, and community
giving that unites the many mill
villages in the valley. As visitors
see these and other places of
historical significance, they are
encouraged to celebrate their
travels on social media using
There are many other events
to watch for as we prepare to
celebrate the National Park
Service centennial on August
25, 2016. As part of our local
celebration, the Blackstone
River Valley National Historical
Park is hosting 100 interpretive
events between Memorial Day
and Labor Day. This includes a
series of weekly walkabouts. On
August 11, local historian Linda
Hixon will join Ranger Chuck
Arning in offering a walkabout
in Hopedale; attendees will
assemble at 6:30 p.m. at the
Adin Ballou Statute (Hopedale
and Peace streets). Learn more
