Plastic particles can already be found in our food (fish) and even in breast milk - which is also the motivation behind the Plastic Madonna. “Since my first visit to Rio de Janeiro, I fell in love with the city, but I was worried about the amount of waste in such a beautiful landscape. This motivated us to organize the beach clean-ups in Rio’s beaches in the summer, in order to raise awareness among residents and visitors and give prominence to this global problema. The Plastic Madonna is the result of teamwork: we turn waste into art”, says Marijn Everaarts, Dopper’s CEO and founder. THE SCULPTURE Brazilian Eric Fuly designed the Plastic Madonna based on the idea conceived by the Dutch Peter Smith. For the creation of the sculpture, Eric set up a technical team composed of young people who participate in a social and educational project, which operates in the artistic education of young people, giving them the opportunity to gain experience, professional development and a source of income. Eric teaches them new artistic techniques and how to aply them for the reuse of plastic, helping them to see the material in a different way. Thus, art becomes a vehicle to transmit to them teachings about the environment and sustainability. PLASTIC IN THE OCEANS Dopper bases its actions in various researches, among them one by Dr. J.A Van Franeker, reasearcher at IMARES, from Wageningen UR. His study says that, in an annual basis, about eight million tons of plastic enter the ocean, and it’s likely that this plastic is broken into microparticles that are ingested by small organisms that form the base of our food chain. In Brazil alone, for instance, 250 thousand tons of waste are produced every day, and only 2% of this volume is recycled. Rio de Janeiro’s City Hall suppports the Plastic Madonna and also recognizes the urgency of this environmental issue. 16
DUTCHAM MAGAZINE Meeting with Eurocamaras News from the European Delegations and Interview with Dr. Renato Pacheco On the 5th of July, Eurocamaras of Brazil conducted a meeting, which took place in Swedcham’s Headquarters, aimed to present the European Delegation’s current activities in Brazil, giving updates on the European Union - Mercosur Free Trade Agreement negotiations and the EU Delegation/Member States/Eurocamaras visits to other Brazilian States and held these seminars. The meeting discussed Market Access; on 29 th of June in Brasilia, a Trade Coordinator Meeting took place within the European Union-Brazil Joint Committee that discussed Brazilian Market Access barriers. During the event, Allergenic labelling query was also addressed. One of the topics also commented was the ELAN Project, it’s status quo and implementation; The project objective is to increase and diversify the European Union's economic presence in Latin America, by generating sustainable collaboration initiatives in which knowledge is transformed into equitable socio-economic development. The Brexit Issue are still being very much talked about and analyzed worldwide, the meeting aimed to try to explain the situation and how it affected Brazil and its market. 17
