Our second short-term objective is to greatly increase the AUP community’s awareness of ASM. This year, we want to be sure that everyone on campus, from I.T. director to Professors to the Administration, knows exactly what ASM is. We have begun to work on branding the individual media. Along with logos, many different ASM media have plans to reach out to the student body. Paris/Atlantic has planned to manufacture stickers with their official logo and distribute them to students across campus. They are also creating an impressive art installation and pop-up exhibits on-campus for this semester. Together AIRCollective and Paris/Atlantic have planned an event of music and artistic creation, where students can gather together to express their creativity, listen to great music and generate art. On October 17th, Cosmopolite will host a student-led discussion panel surrounding the question, “Are we in an Age of Anxiety?” The Editor-in-Chief, Justine Davis, will include some of the results from the panel in the final journal. Our third short-term objective is to economize and cut costs in our budget, compared to last year. Two journals have been put on hiatus for this semester, Keystone and Core. Without a determined and organized Editor-in-Chief, I am not confident that the journal will produce good content; therefore it would be a financial risk. This semester, we have already decreased the Panam[e] budget significantly. Executive Producer Luke Shepard has coordinated with the Multimedia Office. They have agreed to loan us two camera sets this semester for Panam[e] TV’s use. This has prevented ASM from needing to purchase new cameras for Panam[e] this semester. ASM is also formulating an online payment form for L’esprit, AUP’s annual yearbook, which will be available on MyAUP. This way the yearbooks will be paid for before they are printed. We will know how many are indemand and will, therefore, be able to pay for the yearbook with its profits. Long-term Objectives: Our main long-term objective is to implement a solid support system from the administration and professors for AUP Student Media. This semester, ASM has been working closely with Dean Neil Gordon and the Office of Academic Affairs to formulate a proposal for earning credit as an editor of The Planet. The Planet will be a pilot for this next semester. Depending on its success, we may try and implement other opportunities for earning credit in ASM. We hope that with this new opportunity, there will be a rise in interest from the student body, as well as an improvement in content. Department Chair Waddick Doyle has been working with us to create a radio course for next semester. This course would be closely tied with AIRCollective and will be producing content in tandem with the club. All events, along with dates: AUP Student Media Launch Party, Thursday, December 8 th from 18h00 – 21h00 in the Grand Salon. This party will celebrate the publication of this semester’s journals, as well as the December issue of The Planet. AIR Collective will d-j the event and Panam[e] TV will be screening videos produced throughout this past semester. Meetings (include times and frequency) Open to entire community?
The ASM Board is strict about meeting on a bi-monthly basis. These Board meetings are open to the AUP community. We usually meet on the Saturdays, as it is difficult to accommodate everyone’s busy schedule during the week. Aside from the regular Board meetings, all of the Editors-in-Chief and Executive Producers have weekly office hours in the ASM office (B-14) and for AIR Collective, in the radio studio (G-5). This information can be found under ‘Contacts’ on ASM’s MyAUP club page. How do you plan to communicate about your club? Communication strategy? Kilian Ordelheide is ASM’s Marketing Director this year and already has many innovative ideas for our communication strategy. Along with the traditional social media venues, like Facebook and Twitter, ASM will be widely promoted through MyAUP. We intend to use this webpage as our ultimate source of information. Working with the I.T. department, ASM is in the process of re-vamping our webpage. We will integrate it with the MyAUP umbrella website, but will have our own, distinct url. We, of course, advertise our publications and media through posters around campus, as well as on the SGN. An advantage of ASM is that we are an organization of many different clubs. We will use each other to promote and communicate the work of ASM. For instance, AIR Collective will invite other ASM members to talk about their projects on the air. In the past three years that I have spent at AUP, I have become very aware of the fact that face-to-face interaction is the best kind of promotion on campus. We feel that it is very important to connect directly with the students and not on some online forum. Therefore, we have implemented new strategies to overcome these challenges. The Editors-in-Chief of the journals are in contact with professors of different departments to see if they can visit their courses to give a five-minute presentation of their respective journal - Convergence has already visited two communications classes. “Planet Nights” are evenings that are hosted in the ASM office, where students are invited to come collaborate on articles, photos and layout design for the upcoming newspaper issue. Representatives of ASM have planned to attend the upcoming Open House on November 26 th for prospective students and their parents. We will have a table at the fair with copies of every journal last semester and issues of the newspaper. These past few weeks, I conducted an ASM Fall Survey that was available on our MyAUP club page. This survey covered many general aspects of ASM; we asked students to ‘rate the quality of each journal’, discern ‘their level of involvement with ASM’ and many other questions. After two weeks of constant promotion, many students filled out the survey. The results have been invaluable to everyone at ASM. The comments section has provided us with insight into what kind of content the student body wants, as well as making us aware of the current perception of ASM in the AUP community. Though this survey was one-way communication, it has provided us with crucial information that will enable us to better cater to our university community.
