What are the organization’s mainoutputs? What seem to be its strengths and weaknesses? Is the organization part <strong>of</strong> a larger group,and if so, how does the ownership structure influence how decisions are made?In the next section, describe your role as an intern, and state the number <strong>of</strong> hours a week, thenumber <strong>of</strong> credits to be earned (4), where and when you are working, and the sorts <strong>of</strong> practical skillsand tools used.Finally, you should relate your experience <strong>of</strong> the workplace to the academic material covered duringyour studies. How did the material you covered relate to your work and how does it help you toanalyze your position in the workplace? What was most relevant in your studies to your pr<strong>of</strong>essionalexperience?Informational InterviewThis section involves a critical account <strong>of</strong> an interview <strong>of</strong> a key employee in the company – this canbe a member <strong>of</strong> senior management, one <strong>of</strong> your co-workers, or your immediate supervisor. You willfind suggested procedures and questions in this package. <strong>The</strong> aim is to get a feel for the career paths<strong>of</strong> an individual working in the company. How did he or she develop his or her chosen career? Whatadvice does he/she have for you? Do you view this individual as a mentor? This should be betweentwo and five pages long.Plagiarism, Library Access, and Confidentiality<strong>The</strong> report may in part be inspired by the organization’s corporate literature, but the bulk <strong>of</strong> the workto be handed in must be the student’s own. Students who draw heavily from other sources withoutciting them properly will be subject to university disciplinary action. In addition, students enrolled ininternships benefit from remote access to AUP library databases, but these are intended for non-pr<strong>of</strong>iteducational use and are for the student’s personal research only – NOT for research requested bythe employer as part <strong>of</strong> the student’s internship duties. <strong>Internship</strong> Office 118, rue St. Dominique 75007 <strong>Paris</strong>4 GUIDELINES FOR INFOR<strong>MA</strong>TIONAL INTERVIEWSStudents pursuing an internship must submit a critical account <strong>of</strong> an interview <strong>of</strong> two or more keyemployees, if possible a person from senior management and a co-worker or your immediatesupervisor, focusing on the career paths <strong>of</strong> individuals working in the organization. This provides anopportunity to acquire information useful in the formulation <strong>of</strong> career plans. This section <strong>of</strong> the reportshould be approximately five pages long.RECOMMENDED PROCEDURE1. Request permission to interview your contact by either writing or calling directly to ask for anappointment. He or she should be informed <strong>of</strong> the purpose <strong>of</strong> the interview and approximatelyhow much time it will take. <strong>The</strong> interview should last at least 20 minutes.2. Prepare the interview by making a list <strong>of</strong> questions (see below). Avoid personal questions.3. Be on time for the interview. Ask for permission to take notes or record the interview should youwish to do this. If the report will contain confidential information, make sure that the contactunderstands that a written summary will be read by faculty members and possibly others in theAUP community.4. Within a week following the interview, send a note to your contact to express thanks for his/hertime, consideration and ideas. Indicate when the report will be ready and send him or her acopy.5. It includes skilful use <strong>of</strong>resource materials, anecdotes or examples, and clear writing, and contains no grammatical ortypographical errors.B – Good. <strong>The</strong> report presents a reasonable degree <strong>of</strong> insight and broad levels <strong>of</strong> analysis. Workreflects competence, but remains at a general level <strong>of</strong> understanding. Use <strong>of</strong> resource materials andexamples is appropriate, and writing is clear.C – Adequate/Fair. <strong>The</strong> report demonstrates some understanding but remains superficial, incomplete,or expresses some significant errors or weaknesses.
