Yuichi Takasaka was born in Japan. He became interested in photography in his late teens when he moved to Canada. He worked as a video cameraman in the
late 1980’s and began to develop an eye for a good picture while doing this job. Yuichi didn’t seriously develop his photography skills until the early 1990’s when he
moved to Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories, Canada. While living there, he gained much of his expertise from conferring with professional photographers
who shared their love of the craft with him. Since that time, Yuichi’s images have appeared in various brochures and magazines, in educational books and textbooks,
and on many Internet web pages, including the NASA and National Geographic. Yuichi now lives in Lumby, British Columbia, Canada and operates photography
& tourism services under the business name “Blue Moon Promotions”. Yuichi is a member of the TWAN (The World at Night) to promote the night sky through
the Astronomers Without Border organization. http://www.twanight.org/
Artist Statement
My love of colours in nature led me to my love affair with the Aurora Borealis. I first saw these strange Lights in Jasper, Alberta in the spring of 1990 and photographed
them. Later I discovered that these strange “Lights” were the Aurora Borealis. After moving to Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories, I soon found
that this area is one of the best places in the world to observe the Aurora Borealis. I did a lot of experimenting trying to photograph the Lights at night, while
working at a tour company during the day promoting the Lights to the Japanese market. These Lights became a part of my life. I left Yellowknife after living there
for 7 years; however I still go back to lead photography tours every year in order to photograph yet another variation of the Lights.

Boating Regulations Survey
Letter to the Editor,
The fact is, the RDNO mislead the
public during the 2015 boating regulations
survey by repeatedly restating,
through the media, their five reasons
for the proposed regulations as if they
were fact when they knew they were
not. They also set up booths to drive
surveys only at events that were unrelated
to boating. They did not set up any
booths at any boating related events or
locations. The RDNO has embraced a
special interest group’s agenda and has
carried out this unwarranted and malicious
smear campaign against boaters.
The results of the survey are only
close because the RDNO’s actions left
the public with the impression that the
Shuswap River was in a dire state and
that boats are responsible, neither of
which are true. Even with the RDNO’s
campaign, the survey shows more people
are against the proposed regulations
than for them.
Further to the above, when you are
proposing dramatic changes that will
have devastating affects a large number
of people and families in a community
the threshold for imposing such changes
should be 75% -90% of the community
in favor before they are even
considered. If these changes were to
proceed hundreds of people and families
would suffer the effects, alternatively,
not making these changes does
not inflict changes on anyone’s financial
situation, retirement plans, succession
and estate planning or lifestyle.
Despite the RDNO’s rhetoric, these
happen! Without you all
this would not be possible.
proposed changes are a result of a small
group who do not like boats period.
One of the claims of the RDNO is
“safety” concerns (the RDNO acknowledges
there are no recorded accidents
involving motorised users on the river).
We all agree safety is important and
should always be considered. However
if the government is so concerned , why
has neither the RDNO nor The City of
Enderby put up proper swim barriers,
or even a single sign, around Waterwheel
and areas of concern near Enderby.
I asked the Mayor of Enderby this
last year at one of our group’s meetings.
Mayor McCune’s response was that it
would cost $40,000.
To this day the RDNO continues
to exclude boaters and affected stakeholders
(as they have since 2009). Just
this week they have denied, for the 4th
time, our applications to present to the
board. These denials are in violation
of their own “Administrative Procedures”.
Had the RDNO embraced and included
all sides from the beginning in
2009, we could have had meaningful
conversations to identify “true” issues
and address them accordingly. Instead
the RDNO excluded the very groups
that will be affected and has now driven
a wedge between the community members.
We expect more from our elected
officials and our administrators. All
RDNO officials and management, who
had any part of this, should be ashamed
of their handling of this process all the
way back to 2009.
Loneliness can affect us all at different times, in different ways. Whether it’s a
fleeting feeling or a constant state of disconnection, here are a couple of the ways
to combat loneliness.
The first is investing. Not the regular kind (although that is a wise idea), how
about investing in you. Most of us are used to taking care of others, whether in
small ways or big, but we sometimes forget who the person walking around in
our skin actually is or what they want and need.
It is time to invest in you by taking care of yourself first. Start doing things you
have put off to one side for years. Eat that chocolate, buy those red shoes, or ditch
that bad habit for a new one!
I have always known I should quit smoking, but I liked it too much. I finally
made the decision and then realized if I was going to succeed I had to find other
activities to keep myself busy. It didn’t take long for me to realize one of the new
activities better be exercise, because the pounds were piling on. I purchased a
stationary bike and began riding every morning – it was hard to start with - 10
minutes of riding felt like 10 hours! I persevered and I am now up to 30 minutes
every morning, but the really good news is that I bought myself a bicycle and now
ride with friends on Sunday! The real bonus of quitting smoking was connecting
with people who shared
my new interest and getting
to enjoy time with
them!
Another way of investing
in yourself is through
volunteering. What do
you love to do and what
knowledge could you
share with others? Those
who volunteer give of
their time and talent,
but often say it is what
they get back from it that
gives them the greatest
rewards.
Is there anything you
want to do but keep telling
yourself you can’t? I
would suggest you get
out there and try it right
now! Do what you love,
share yourself. The world
is waiting for you!
Senior Housing in Lumby
Most small communities do not have the amenities
of Lumby. Case in point, Saddle Mountain Place,
a beautifully located, affordable housing complex for
seniors, was built by volunteers in the seventies. Saddle
Mountain Place consists of three buildings with
a total of forty units, half of which are one bedroom
apartments and the other half, bachelor suites. The
facility also provides a lounge and kitchen with various
meal and leisure programs, a coin operated laundry
and three gazebos for outside enjoyment. No
smoking is allowed on the property.
Saddle Mountain Place backs onto Bessette Creek
and the Salmon Walkway with over 7 kilometers of
trails and bridges for accessible recreation. It is less
than a block from both the Health Clinic and the
OAP hall (where one can take in a game of Bingo
weekly and many other activities). The Library is also
within easy walking distance and Lumby downtown
is readily accessible.
Herb notes from all over…
From Wales:
Working with ancient recipe
to recreate “super” mead
”Back in the sixteenth century, there
was a Welsh drink called metheglin.
Metheglin translates into ‘healing liquor’
basically, it’s mead... alcoholic
mead that we drink... combined with
medicinal herbs. What we are trying to do is identify
those medicinal herbs that we could add to the mead
to make a drink that was antibacterial.”
– Prof Les Baillie, Cardiff University
From the U.S.:
“The Journal of the American Medical Association
reported on a recent study involving 6,653 women
experiencing menopausal symptoms. They were randomly
assigned to take a plant-based therapy — phytoestrogens
such as dietary soy isoflavones and soy
extract, herbal remedies such as red clover and black
cohosh or Chinese or other medicinal herbs — or a
placebo. Overall, after an average of three months,
those who took a plant-based treatment had fewer
hot flashes daily and less dryness than the others,
but essentially experienced no reduction in the occurrence
of night sweats. The researchers described
Analysis of specific treatments showed an improvement
in night sweats for red clover but no effect on
herbs such as dong quai also had no effect on
menopause symptoms, but newer medicinal herbs,
such as pine bark extract, did show improvement in
From the U.S.:
“Coffee has a long history of being blamed for many
ills,” writes the Mayo Clinic on its website, “from
stunting your growth to claims that it causes heart
disease and cancer. But recent research indicates that
coffee may not be so bad after all. So which is it—
good or bad? The best answer may be that for most
people the health benefits outweigh the risks.”
From Australia:
Recent research from Australia supports what I’ve
always said:” taking European elderberry extract may
result in a shorter duration of a cold with less symptom
severity”. Elderberry is an excellent tonic for the whole
body. I take 1-2 tbsp. daily, and use it as an elixir when
suffering from influenza, colds cough, rheumatic aches,
congestion and sore throat – take ¼ tsp 6x/day. Here
is my favourite tonic using elderberries:
“Nourishing a Local Economy”
By Nina Westaway
Climate change is not just a possibility, but a reality
in our neck of the woods. This year we have experienced
a hot early summer, a very wet June and July,
preceded by a low snowfall in winter.
To use the example of cherry growing, this spring
was record-breaking hot in May but rainy extending
even into July so the cherry season was less than
stellar, despite early predictions for a bumper crop.
However the cherries arrived for picking three weeks
early and this was problematic as the cherries were
billed as “late-blooming cherries” so as not to compete
with foreign markets. Cherries are the highest
value fruit crop in BC but weather and pests make their growing a precarious
endeavor.
On CBC this morning (Daybreak South), Monday, July 11, the topic was
about cherries and how climate change might allow the production of them to be
extended to the north of our Okanagan zone and at higher elevations. An online
newsletter, Orchard and Vine (July 7, 2016) highlighted a new project that could
take advantage of climate change if scientific innovation was applied.
“One of the impacts of climate change and warmer average temperatures is the
increasing number of areas suitable for production of sweet cherries occurring
in the BC Interior and north Okanagan. But more information is needed on the
impact of climate change, water availability and conditions and management of
pests and disease. A project underway through UBC Okanagan with partners
from government, industry and local growers is looking at how to optimize cherry
production in the Okanagan Valley under current and projected climate conditions
while ensuring optimal water efficiency and
soil health.
The project, launched in 2015, was spearheaded
by soil microbiologists at UBC Okanagan including
Drs. Louise Nelson and Melanie Jones …“Efficient
water management is a key factor in fruit tree production,
however, and is expected to become even
more of an issue with climate change,” explains Dr.
Nelson. A short term objective of the project is to
optimize water use in cherry orchards established in
more northern and higher elevation sites made available
by warmer temperatures and a longer growing
season. Methods of orchard floor management and
irrigation methods that could potentially conserve
soil moisture while providing effective irrigation are
being investigated.”
Climate change today manifests itself in drought,
forest fires, extreme weather and unexpected weather
patterns—apart from the El Niña and El Niño patterns.
This project dealing with cherries has objectives that can be applied to
other food production: conservation of water, management for healthy soil and
treatment of pests.
I would appreciate LVT readers sending me their observations of climate
change, particularly in BC and the North Okanagan, which I will print in a later
edition. In addition, what are your concerns for food production? Do you feel
that organic crops can survive global climate changes? What can be done to avert
food shortages?
My e-mail address is: westawayn@yahoo.ca.
P.S. I am happy to report that the Monashee Community Co-op was able to
obtain organic cherries from Lake Country and may still be taking orders for
cherries at the time of publication.
Technology has a way
of making things obsolete
very fast. When was
the last time you used a
pay phone at a phone
booth? Probably a long
time ago. When I was
growing up in the city
there was a phone booth
on almost every corner,
now trying to find one
is a hard thing to do. I
drove around Vernon
the other day I don’t remember
seeing any there
on the streets (probably Photo by Colleen Fielding
one at the Greyhound
bus service, and hospital although I did not go in
there.) So I took a drive around Lumby on Sunday.
I found four of them, there could be more, but
it was Sunday and places like the Curling Rink, and
Arena were closed. The ones I found were: right
in front of the Rusty Spur on Hwy 6, Twin Creeks
Motel, and White Valley Community Centre they
all worked. The one at Highway 6 and Miller Street
did not work. They now cost 50 cents to use them.
But because of the use of cell phones the phone companies
now lose money on pay phones.
Pay phones are now used mostly by the elderly,
the homeless, and victims of abuse. In times of a last
resort inconvenience and emergency, and or, people
trying to call different areas of the government.
Sometimes they use pay phones, as the wait can really
add up their cell phone bill (pay as you go). Colleges
and Universities are full of pay phones. They
can still be found at Airports, Train Stations, some
Bus Terminals and other transportation hubs.
There have been a lot of movies, comic books, video
games, and TV shows where the phone booth plays
a vital part. There has even been a movie with Colin
Farrell called Phone Booth.
The first telephone box was called Fernesprecherkiosk
it was opened January 12 1881 in Berlin.
At that time you needed to buy paper tickets that
were called Telefonbillet which only gave you a couple
of minutes to talk. It wasn’t until 1889 when
an inventor named William Gray from the United
States replaced the paper tickets with coin operated
pay phones, George A. Long was the developer of
this device. By 1899 all paper ticket phone booths
became coin operated.
So remember when you go out if your cell
phone is not with you, if you look carefully you
might still find a pay phone that is still working, all
you need is 50 cents in your pocket.
BADGER
WATCH
Have you seen our local Badgers?
If you have any pictures, sightings or stories of our elusive local
badgers, email them to us with your name, when and where
you saw him/her and we will publish it in the Badger Watch.
Email them to editor@lumbyvalleytimes.ca.
Use BADGER WATCH as the subject of your email.
July 14
• Kyna Milliken - My son Seamus (2.5 yrs
old) saw one in the kitchen…Sorry Seamus,
but I think that’s a wolverine.
• Kathy Katie Macmillan - Just saw one 20
minutes ago, crossing Whitevale Rd on the
corner just south of the school...my guess
a female...full grown, but not especially
large...made my day!
• Angie Hill - I saw a badger today! However it was at the BC Wildlife Park
• Sheila Mccluskey - One was trying to cross the highway and Dure
Meadow Rd by the golf course!
• Aimee Lawrence - Saw one between the new signs!
July 15
• Meghann Maxwell - I hit one with my car on Whitevale Road by Denji’s
memorial, it was just stunned.
• Jane Emlyn - We saw one almost where the sign is about 6 months ago
and saw one on Trinity Valley Rd up from the dump about 20 years ago.
• Dayle Guenard Hopp - Saw one crossing Hwy 6 near Zelaney’s.
• Ron Charest - I seen 2, both times it crossed just past the sign at the
pullout. They went under the wood there.
• Sheron Moncherry Regamey - Saw one a few weeks ago that got runover,
it was close to the sign
• Carmen Joy Hart - My sister-in-law saw one about a week ago near the
sign. She said it was huge!
July 16
• Julie-Ann Alexander - Holy mackerel!!! Just about hit the badger coming
home from Vernon about 15 min ago. This side of the golf course just past
the cattle ranch on the right near the house for sale sign. Thank goodness
there was no one behind me. Really would have loved to get a picture
but there was oncoming traffic. Those signs are no joke! I will drive slow
through that area for sure. I do feel very fortunate to have seen such a
rare and wonderful animal.
July 18
• Wesley Wiebe - I just seen a badger crossing.. Must be a sign
• Patti Loney Neufeld - Well now I just seen the elusive or one of the
elusive badgers, thought I was stopping to see a cat that had been hit by
a car at the driveway to the old sweet berry farm on Mabel Lake Road
(where the goats and critters are) and low and behold there was a badger,
now for the folks that think I am crazy, there was two other people, (the
owners of the big farm house) at said location that came running out and
asked me if it was mine and needed help catching it, which I answered
ahhhh it is a badger, they ran out and had a better look and said oh my
goodness you are right. After watching it for a bit, I raced home to get a
camera, missed that opportunity damn it, but I did see it, which is now
officially twice!!!!
REMEMBER, DO NOT APPROACH THE BADGERS!
These are wild animals and also may have a bad temper,
so please treat them with respect and give them their space.
Percy Clarence
Sirr
June 18, 1921 - July 09, 2016
Clarence passed away peacefully
in his sleep at Gateby Intermediate
Care Residence in Vernon, B.C.
on July 09, 2016 and now joins
his beloved wife Glady who passed
away in 2011 shortly before their
60th wedding anniversary.
Clarence was born in Carstairs Alberta
into a ranching family and spent his youth and
early adulthood as a cowboy. In the late 1940s he led pack
horses on a number of government surveying expeditions
into the Yukon. One year there was a delay in the start of the
expedition and while he waited for supplies and horses in
Nakusp he met Glady Murphy who was living there with her
parents and waitressing at the Leland. He made very sure
he went back to see her as soon the trip was over! Clarence
and Glady were married in 1951 and spent the first years
of their marriage in Nakusp where Darrel and Lea were
born. In 1956 the family moved to Cherryville and farmed.
Clarence drove grader and snow plow over the Monashee
for the department of highways in all weather for about 15
years then spent another 20 years grading and plowing for
local logging companies. After retirement Clarence and
Glady made many trips in their motor home as far south as
Arizona and as far North as Alaska. They sold the farm in
Cherryville and moved to the Villas in Lumby in 2002 where
they made new friends and spent many happy hours golfing
at the Lumby golf course and participating in shuffleboard
and cribbage tournaments at the Legion. In 2010 they
moved to Canterbury Court in Vernon.
Family was Clarence’s greatest joy and he did everything
he could to support and help them throughout his life. He
made sure his sons learned to play guitar, a skill they both
still exercise, and spent many hours driving them and all
their equipment to and from gigs when they were in their
teens. Clarence could always be counted on to lend a hand
to friends, family, and neighbours.
Clarence is survived by his two sons Darrel (April Sheehan)
Sirr and Lea (Christina) Sirr; granddaughters Holly (Tyson
Derdau) Sirr, Stacy (Murray) Ardell, and Lauren Sirr and
great granddaughters Sophia and Madeline Ardell.
The family will be having a private memorial at a later
date. Condolences can be sent to the family c/o Pleasant
Valley Funeral Home in Vernon. No flowers please. Friends
can make donations to the charity of their choice in
remembrance of Clarence if they wish.
Notes From the
Lumby Public Market
The rain held off, and the Saturday
Market was busy. Donna’s wish, posted
on Around the Block Lumby, was
fulfilled; John Brown came with handsome,
affordable and home-made bird
and bat houses. The bat house will make
a great addition to the bird; bee and
butterfly houses already up in our yard.
What next? A tiny house by Rouck
farms had apples
and there were
lots of apricots,
peaches, cherries and fresh veggies on offer. Stephanie
Noakes from Clinton dropped by with dream
catchers, chocolates and Guatemalan coffee beans. A
good time was had by all.
