Loneliness can affect us all at different times, in different ways. Whether it’s a
fleeting feeling or a constant state of disconnection, here are a couple of the ways
to combat loneliness.
The first is investing. Not the regular kind (although that is a wise idea), how
about investing in you. Most of us are used to taking care of others, whether in
small ways or big, but we sometimes forget who the person walking around in
our skin actually is or what they want and need.
It is time to invest in you by taking care of yourself first. Start doing things you
have put off to one side for years. Eat that chocolate, buy those red shoes, or ditch
that bad habit for a new one!
I have always known I should quit smoking, but I liked it too much. I finally
made the decision and then realized if I was going to succeed I had to find other
activities to keep myself busy. It didn’t take long for me to realize one of the new
activities better be exercise, because the pounds were piling on. I purchased a
stationary bike and began riding every morning – it was hard to start with - 10
minutes of riding felt like 10 hours! I persevered and I am now up to 30 minutes
every morning, but the really good news is that I bought myself a bicycle and now
ride with friends on Sunday! The real bonus of quitting smoking was connecting
with people who shared
my new interest and getting
to enjoy time with
them!
Another way of investing
in yourself is through
volunteering. What do
you love to do and what
knowledge could you
share with others? Those
who volunteer give of
their time and talent,
but often say it is what
they get back from it that
gives them the greatest
rewards.
Is there anything you
want to do but keep telling
yourself you can’t? I
would suggest you get
out there and try it right
now! Do what you love,
share yourself. The world
is waiting for you!
Senior Housing in Lumby
Most small communities do not have the amenities
of Lumby. Case in point, Saddle Mountain Place,
a beautifully located, affordable housing complex for
seniors, was built by volunteers in the seventies. Saddle
Mountain Place consists of three buildings with
a total of forty units, half of which are one bedroom
apartments and the other half, bachelor suites. The
facility also provides a lounge and kitchen with various
meal and leisure programs, a coin operated laundry
and three gazebos for outside enjoyment. No
smoking is allowed on the property.
Saddle Mountain Place backs onto Bessette Creek
and the Salmon Walkway with over 7 kilometers of
trails and bridges for accessible recreation. It is less
than a block from both the Health Clinic and the
OAP hall (where one can take in a game of Bingo
weekly and many other activities). The Library is also
within easy walking distance and Lumby downtown
is readily accessible.
All the units are level entry but the bathrooms and
