Miscellanea of Churt, Farnham
I always advise my customers to buy something they love,
rather than what’s in fashion, because then it will last. With
all the electronic help these days, on sites like Pinterest, people
are more confident than they used to be about being more
eclectic with their styling, because they can see something
inspiring and then interpret it into their own homes.
More people are looking to buy good bits of art for the
home, individual pieces, and I’m happy to see that these days
that quality is more important than quantity.
Chinese porcelain has been achieving record prices
at auction, but following closely in its wake has been
a dramatic increase in prices for traditional Chinese
furniture. Such furniture is typically made of a class
of hardwoods, known as ‘Rosewood’. These woods
are dense and finely grained, properties which make
the furniture highly stable and hardwearing.
Stylistically Chinese furniture works well in a
traditional English interior and can be found in pride
of place in many of the great ‘Stately Homes’. However
it works equally well in the minimalist modern settings
currently in fashion. A single altar table can produce
the ‘wow’ factor when used as a statement feature.
Wildwinds Antiques and Collectables, Teynham
More and more customers are looking for pieces of
traditional furniture to hide the chargers, remote
controls, and all the assorted technology that seems to
be essential to our busy lives but looks so unsightly, and
a lovely old roll-top desk or a bureau is a perfect place.
A sturdy Victorian or Edwardian chest of drawers
no longer keeps the clothes and linen in check, but
comfortably houses the CDs and DVDs, and glass-fronted
display cabinets, which used to house the Royal Doulton
and the Wedgwood, can look fabulous in a bedroom
showing off beautiful shoes and bags. These craftsmanmade
pieces of furniture continue not only to look good,
but also adapt beautifully to modern-day living.
Aunty Wainright’s
Currently we are finding our customers are purchasing top quality items
which are practical and can be used in their homes, such as good period
mahogany, walnut and oak pieces. Antique jewellery is also popular. People
are tending to spend their money on items which they like and will look
good in their homes. The priority is beautiful things to live with - rather
than pieces that are seen as an investment.
