Omkareshwar is a sacred place of temples. It is a religious place dedicated
to Lord Shiva. The place can be easily approached by any transportation
facility, Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport in Indore, and Raja Bhoj Airport in
Bhopal is the nearest domestic airport. The trains and buses are also
connected to the town very well.
Omkareshwar is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and one of the 12
sacrosanct Jyortirlinga Shrines of Shiva. The place is situated on an island
called Mandhata or Shivpuri on the Narmada River, the shape of the
island is said to be like the ॐ (OM) symbol, a sacred symbol of Hindu
religion.

You will find either a history or a mythology behind the curtain
in India. These stories make it more interesting to explore
it. This is one kind of that place; this will also tell you a story of
Brahma – the creator, Vishnu – the protector and Shiva – the
destroyer, the Trimurti or the three Hindu God who create the
world. It is told in Shiv Mahapuran, that once upon a time Lord
Brahma and Vishnu had an argument to prove in terms of
supremacy of creation, to overcome this argument Lord
decided to take the test, he pierced the three worlds as a huge
endless pillar of light, the jyotirlinga. And then tell both of
them, they have to find the end of the light in downward and
upward directions respectively. Brahma lied that he got the
end, while Vishnu conceded his defeat.
After that Shiva appeared as a second pillar of light and cursed
the Lord Brahma that he will not worship in ceremony while
Vishnu will be worship till the end of eternity.
This Jyotirlingam is part of that supreme partless reality, and these Jyotirlingams are placed where Shiva appeared as a fiery
column of light. There are 64 Jyotirlingams but 12 of them are considered as most of the holiest lingams.
