Binoculars and/or a camera are recommended, but not required. Meet the ranger in the lobby of the refuge visitor center 15 minutes prior to the program start time. Each session is limited to 14 participants; no more than 4 individuals per sign-up. Again, this is a vehicle-based tour, with limited stops on the refuge. Advance registration is required for this program, as enrollment is limited. MONDAY, AUGUST 8th TIDE POOL DISCOVERIES August 8th 9:00 am & August 22nd 9:00 am - For generations children have enjoyed exploring tide pools and discovering the fascinating plants and animals that live in this realm between the tides. A refuge ranger will guide this hands-on program. Appropriate for children age 5 – 10. Each session is limited to 15 children. Each session is 90 minutes long, allowing time for travel to and from the beach. Meet the ranger at the visitor contact station at parking lot 1. Parent/ guardian must remain with his/ her child for the entire duration of this program. A licensed raptor rehabilitator from Wingmasters will talk about the different types of raptors and their adaptations. They will bring one or more of the endangered raptors they care for. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY FOR YARN CRAFTERS IN THE MERRIMACK VALLEY See Wednesday, August 3rd. WEDNESDAY EVENING SHOREBIRDING Each Wednesday evening in August, we will introduce participants to the wonderful diversity of shorebirds that migrate through the Newburyport/Plum Island area during the late summer. The field trips are designed to provide participants with the tools to identify Massachusetts shorebirds and to deliver an indepth understanding of the biology and ecology of these fascinating animals. Participants will observe various migration schedules and the relative abundance of these birds. Each week we will focus on several species, discussing their identifying characteristics, behavior, habitat preferences, and range. Complete applications must be received at refuge headquarters no later than 4:00 pm on Thursday, August 4th. Permits will be awarded by lottery selection. Selectees will be notified by email or phone no later than Monday, August 8th. All successful applicants must pick up their permit, have their vehicle inspected, and pay the appropriate fee at the refuge headquarters by Sunday, August 21st. If any permits remain unclaimed, alternates will be notified by August 22nd and must pick up their permit, have their vehicle inspected, and pay the appropriate fee by August 31st. Additional information will be provided to successful applicants. Inspection times will be weekdays 8:30 am to 4:00pm and some weekend hours (information which will be provided to lottery winners). Tours are from 1 to 4 P.M. There is a short ladder at the top and sneakers are required. Children must be 42” tall and 5 years old. Parking and admission are free but donations are accepted and appreciated. Special Events - The Annual Meeting will be on Sept 21st at 7:30 P.M. at PITA Hall. Speaker to be announced. To apply, applicants must fill out a permit application form available on the refuge website and send it to the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department Office. Applications are also available at Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. Completed applications must be postmarked by September 16th or hand delivered by September 23th to: New Hampshire Fish & Game Department, 11 Hazen Dr, Concord, NH 03301 Attention: Wildlife Division. The NH Fish & Game Department will randomly select 40 hunters, 20 for each day, by October 14th. Selected hunters will be notified by mail and will receive more information about the hunt. Selected hunters must submit a payment to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to receive their permit. Fees are used to offset the costs of the deer hunt. The fee is $20 for a hunter 16-61 years of age, and $10 for hunters 62 and older. For youth hunters under the age of 16, there is no fee. Once payment is received, successful applicants are issued a permit and may scout the refuge from Thursday, November 3 through Sunday, November 6. The walking tour will take you to the south jetty, where you can see the Merrimack River’s dangerous currents that almost claimed a swimmer’s life, and look south to where Newbury homes on the eroding barrier beach have crashed into storm-driven waves. You will see remnants of where the lighthouse used to be before the island’s ever changing shape forced it to retreat, one of 25 moves in the lighthouse’s long history, and you will see what people have done with signs and fences to preserve the dunes that guard their homes at the Point. You can feel the Sand Machine’s path with your bare feet and see how the Atlantic has tipped the jetty’s boulders into new positions. Sargent is a Climate Crisis author who has written extensively about Plum Island and visits frequently.
