MONTHLY UPDATE
G.W.C.
President’s Note - Bew White, president & c.e.o.
Ahh,July! July is one of the busiest months for Summer Classics and Gabby because of markets.
We have the July preshow in Chicago and then we have the July Atlanta show, which is one of
Gabby’s biggest shows.
This year for the first time we had our sales meeting in Chicago. All of the salespeople were
present. It was the best sales meeting we’ve ever had.
At the market in Chicago we presented over 180 new products. After walking around Chicago,
we can tell you that Summer Classics probably introduced more product than all of the other
competitors combined at the show. Our entry into stainless steel was exclusive. Acero, is our
new stainless steel group in White Label. Carlton is a new wicker group in White Label with a
stitch weave around the border. Venti is our new foray into upholstery for Summer Classics with
reticulated foam. Peninsula is an open weave, raffia wicker collection. Avondale is a cool new
teak group in transitional form. Del Mar is a new stainless sling group. Haley is a traditional
double X back teak group. Cayman, is part of our new “comfort” group. It’s a king size outdoor
canopy bed with reticulated foam. That’s just to name a few...There’s also additions to Wind,
Bali, Sahara and a fresh new color added to our wicker and aluminum collections, Whew!!!
Garden Party promises to be the most sensational ever with a new venue and a surprise speaker
on Thursday morning covering the importance of social media and its ability to pull traffic into
your stores. There are also two nights of heritage dinners. We are going back to Mountain Brook
Club by popular demand! For the first time we’re offering golf, massages, pedicures, manicures
and a tour of the famous Barber Motorsports Museum. We’re also in the process of remodeling
the Highway 31 showroom and our Outlet on County Road 52. The theme this year is Trends.
To top that off, we have the Trend Editor from Traditional Home coming to speak.
This weekend we all head to Las Vegas. Gabby has some exciting new products and Summer
Classics plans to show our new 2017 line for the first time ever on the west coast. You could
call it the West Coast garden party. We are planning to have cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the
showroom every night. Gabby is planning cocktails and some more elaborate events in their
showroom including hosting a dinner.
We had two new critical hires
this month with Beth Sherer
joining us as the new Executive
Vice President of Gabby. She
joins us from Bon Ton Stores,
a $3 billion department store
in the mid-west. Marianne
Gabby Update
Reps Stealing Breakfast
William White, c.m.o. & Gabby president
July order entry is up over last year thanks to an above average July Atlanta market for Gabby. The crowds seemed lighter
than normal for this market but a lot of the right buyers were there shopping the Gabby showroom. We had a great party
on Friday night that included a wine tasting, hors d’oeuvres and a DJ. And now it’s time for Las Vegas market as we host
the “Best of the West Designers” in our showroom. Gabby will continue to expand our relationship with the best, most
influential designers in the marketplace.
We have very exciting personnel news this month! Beth Sherer was announced as
Executive VP of Gabby and will take on an active role in managing the day to day
business. This will also help free up William to focus on marketing initiatives for all of
the brands. She comes with a passion for our company and several years of experience
as an executive in retail merchandising and buying in the mid to high end department
store world.
We would also like to welcome Benson Sebial who joins the Gabby Asia team as a
Technical Furniture Engineer. Benson is from the Philippines and will report to Pam
Cheung, VP of Operations for Asia. His responsibilities will include new product
development specifications, safety, quality, production tracking and sourcing in
Vietnam. He will also lead Sam and Andy, our two capable QC managers on the
ground. Welcome, Beth and Benson!
The Gabby team would like to recognize and thank our Asia team for their tireless efforts to improve our quality and
production lead times. These folks are the unsung heroes behind the scenes that do their best to keep us on the path of
continuous improvement. Pam, William, Wright look forward to leading another annual Asia Summit in early August
with this exceptional team. Travel safe everyone!
Marketing News Mark Griggs, v.p. marketing
It’s that time again! We sprinted through July
compiling the new season’s catalogs, supporting
the early introduction summer shows and
prepping the myriad of items we will need for
Garden Party. The staff is operating at full tilt and will be
throughout August. Summer Classics and White Label’s
catalogs are sent to the printer and we’re working on
Private Label, Contract and Gabby it the heels of those
production projects.
We have added a new videographer to the staff
and will welcome John Rockett into the fold
in early August. His long tenure as a television
news cameraman will give us the speed we need to get
important footage and edit video work quickly into a
finished product. He will be challenged and ready for
Garden Party upon his arrival.
We are adding new personnel in both the public
relations area and graphics. We will be making
important announcements about our newest
Marketing members very soon. Be on the lookout for
these new personnel who will assist us in meeting the
ever growing demands of our successful divisions.
We will be well represented in a multitude of
publications this fall. We have ads, images and
articles placing across the spectrum of industry
magazines, design publications and consumer periodicals
over the next three months. We will be very visible with
all of our brands and divisions!
We welcomed Marianne Minogue into
Retail. We have begun to plan out the remainder
of the year for our stores with
Marianne and her staff. Our first order of
business is driving traffic through the important
Labor Day time period. We have introduced a
contest to the mix to help with that task. The
$10,000 Backyard Makeover has been infused
into our messaging. We’ll be taking entries until
Labor Day for the drawing. Our lucky winner
will get a complete backyard makeover from our
capable team of design consultants.
We said goodbye and good luck to our two
outstanding summer interns. Both Camille
Smith and Kate Collier have left us. Camille
has accepted the challenge of teaching in
inner city schools in New York City. We know
she will apply the same talent and capable calm
she showed us here. Kate has returned to school
at Birmingham Southern to finish her senior
year. She will be successful by exhibiting the same
dedication she did for us.
We had a fantastic time working with our
friends from Wholesale at the National
Sales Meeting. We hosted a series of seminars
on our CRM initiatives and presented
our marketing plans for the coming year. The
sales team got an early look at our 2017 product
mix through our new Product Preview catalog
that was distributed at the event. We look forward
to continuing to build the momentum that
was begun at this important meeting!
Operations Update
The past several months have been very busy in
operations, as wholesale peak season coupled with
continued Gabby and SCC growth have provided
us with plenty to do! Peak season is the time we
stress our systems and processes and evaluate the
performances of both. We’re pretty sure they were
stressed, along with the staff!
As 2016 season starts to wind down, we are moving
forward toward 2017 with great momentum. There
are several large initiatives in process to improve our
efficiencies. The largest and possibly most impactful
of those is the implementation of a WMS system
for distribution. This will be a paradigm shift for
many of the distribution departments as we will
shift from paper based, single order selection to a
hand held, paperless order picking solution. This
will also allow us to move to real time bin location
management, possible randomized storage, and a
ton of other opportunities. More to come on other
initiatives!
SC Private Label
We returned from the Chicago Pre Market and
went straight to the Atlanta Gift Show. Next week
we will be showing our new 2017 Direct Container
collections at the Las Vegas Market.
During the Pre-Market in Chicago we saw many
of our old customers and some new ones. The new
collections were received with enthusiasm and we
displayed the new slate gray finish in Alyssa and
Terrazza. The new Hudson Sectional was on display
along with our new upholstered Emma collection in
Slate Gray. All of these new groups and finishes will
be in Las Vegas and also during the Garden Party.
Summer Classics Private Label will be in the 2, 700
square foot Museum area. We will be able to show
all our collections during the Garden Party.
modernizing/work space professionalism initiative
geared to get our work spaces up to date, safe, and
of projects come to fruition, and see how impactful
they can be.
MONTHLY UPDATE: AUGUST 2016
Sales Update Schon Duke, v.p. sales
July is always a very busy month for
the Sales team… We completed our
Summer Classics National Sales
meeting, Pre-Market in Chicago and
a successful Atlanta market… New
introductions of compelling styles
and innovative products were front
and center. Summer Classics alone has
180 new items for 2017… Gabby has
added more than 100 new product
introductions since April! Summer
Classics and Gabby are fashion and
trend leaders in our industry and our
commitment to that is reflected in all
of these new and innovative products.
2016 National Sales Meeting
Summer Classics had its entire sales
team and supporting cast assembled
in the Merchandise mart in Chicago.
We had over 27 sales representatives
spend two days in intensive strategy
and product training. The topic of
the meeting was embracing change.
Benjamin Franklin’s quote summed
it up best “When you’re finished
changing, you’re finished…” The New
Early buy and Essentials program was
rolled out for 2017. Essentials is our
new stocking program this year and we
are going to stock pre-made cushions
in our bestselling fabric, Linen Dove.
This will be a huge “quick ship”
opportunity for our Summer Classics
Dealers. The Sales team had breakout
meetings focused on CRM, Inside
Sales Support, New Product Training
Program and the ECAT order entry
system… These 4 meetings are the
structural backbone of the support
we are providing for sales team in the
field. The team left Chicago with a
united strategy and family feeling and
excitement for the upcoming season!
Pre-Market Chicago
The New 2017 products were
introduced in Chicago in our fantastic
showroom in the Merchandise Mart.
Wright Curry and his team have
done an amazing job of redefining
and balancing the line with these new
introductions. Clean transitional lines
with new combinations of materials
like stainless steel and teak make the
line very appealing. The dealers loved
the new introductions! Especially
those dealers in key target areas with
many committing to purchases for
2017. When you stand back and look
at the Summer Classics range, we are
truly the fashion leader in the outdoor
category. I walked the halls of the at
our competition, Summer Classics
is truly set apart in our designs. Our
merchandising and innovative use
of multiple materials is unmatched.
We plan to build on the momentum
started with last year’s successful
product launches with these new looks
for Summer Classics in 2017.
Atlanta Market at the AmericasMart
The Atlanta market was back to
back with our Pre-market show in
Chicago. The sales team flew from
6 of 13
Chicago, got off the plane and started
selling in Atlanta. We have been a 25-
year partner with the AmericasMart
and it was one of our very first
showrooms for the Summer Classics
brand. We have the opportunity to
expose our brand to the design trade
in Atlanta. The Design trade is one
of the fastest growing segments in
the Furniture Industry. Allowing this
important group to see what Summer
Classics is all about is important.
Contract Update
Don Smith, v.p. sales of SC Contract
MONTHLY UPDATE: AUGUST 2016
Wow, what a summer! SCCS has been enjoying the beautiful outdoors and a number of new installations as the sunny
days followed by beautiful summer showers let us bask in this amazing season. If you are in our offices perhaps you
take some of the beauty that we see every day for granted. We had the pleasure of hosting someone from Phoenix earlier
this month and she kept remarking at how beautiful, lush and green our state is. We hear this fairly often, so let’s
pause and enjoy the scenery wherever we are. Now, for those of you that know me well I will throw in my two cents
worth of praise for…air conditioning!
July found us busy as usual with trade shows, industry events and the planning for all the ones to come. The beginning
of the month Meg Wilson hosted a few dozen of the largest assisted living and independent living companies at the
annual Senior Lifestyle match event which was in Arizona. There were a few familiar faces but by and large Meg was
able to open up very meaningful dialogue with a cache of potential new SCCS clients. Also in July, SCCS was proud
to sponsor the Atlanta NEWH bowling team. The NEWH or National Executive Women in Hospitality also branded
as The Hospitality Industry Network is a group that we are always proud to sponsor as they promote scholarship,
education and business networking in so many areas of the country. We were also fortunate to be invited to attend a
BIFMA/NeoCon type of event in New York City at the showrooms of 200 Lexington. That’s a great opportunity to
remind everyone that office buildings and their environs are often built with attention to detail for outdoor spaces as
well and we do indeed count that as a niche market segment to pursue with vigor!
in the Fall league for softball. If you are interested, please let either Scott or HR know by mid-
