On August 25, 2016, Streetbar will celebrate its 25th Anniversary. 

Streetbar was the first Gay business on Arenas Road and it is the 

oldest and longest running bar serving the LGBT community in the 

Desert. In the course of his 26 years in the Desert, Dick Haskamp 

has founded, supported and served the Gay Community in our area 

in so many ways. He has been on the Board of Directors for the 

original Desert Gay Rodeo Association, The Desert Business Association, 

The Desert Gay Tourism Guild and the AIDS Assistance 

Program. Dick and his staff at Streetbar have been very active in 

fundraising for various charities including AAP, DAP, The Center, 

Friends of the Palm Springs Animal Shelter, The Sisters of Perpetual 

Indulgence, Smile Train, and many others. Dick currently serves on 

the Board of Directors of The LGBT Community Center of the Desert. 

Dick was Community Grand Marshal of the Pride Parade in 2000. He 

was dedicated a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars on February 

8, 2014 for his contributions to the community. Another star bears 

his name which was dedicated in 2007 for his participation in the 

legendary fundraising troupe, the Les Dames du Soleil. 

The only problem with that is that my entire staff would want to go 

down there to work...(laughs). 

Levvy: When Juli and I moved here there was this magazine called, 

‘Mega-Scene’. Can you tell me a little about that publication? 

Dick: I believe it has been 12 years since Bob Hoven passed. He 

was the publisher and a very dear friend 

of mine. He was truly a mentor. I mean it 

was like losing my mother and father at 

the same time. Bob was that important to 

me. So when people ask about that portrait 

painted hanging on the wall, I have to 

tell them...and that is The Duchess! 

Levvy: Streetbar also does countless 

fund raisers. How did the first ones come 

about? 

Dick: Well, when Hank and I first opened Bob Hoven 

the bar, Gloria Greene came by and said, 

“Dick you have to help out with this organization, Aids Assistance 

Program (AAP).” I just love Gloria! So later I was invited to be on the 

board. I was on that board for 10 years and the president for 2 years. 

Levvy: And what about the Desert Business Association? 

Dick: Oh, yes I was on the DBA board for 10 years and president for 4.

Levvy: Where did you grow up? 

Dick: I grew up in Lincoln Park just south of Detroit. 

Levvy: What a pretty area with all the lakes, did you hang out at the 

lake as a young boy? 

Dick: Yes, I liked to water ski but also we snow skied in the Winter. 

Levvy: So I’d like to know more about your theatre background. 

Dick: I always was involved, my mom was in community theatre as 

I was growing up and I worked in theatre in high school and then I 

majored in theatre so yes theatre has been pretty much my whole life. 

Levvy: Is there one time in one of your plays that really stands out 

for some reason? 

Dick: There was this play in Old Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts 

and it was a show that we did twice a day, six days a week for 

10 weeks. And it was horrible! When one person ‘blew it’ we would 

all crack up. One girl wet her pants on stage. It was a fun Summer! 

We all got to live at a closed down summer camp. There was a nice 

little lake there and my first experience at skinny dipping happened 

there. That was the craziest time! 

Levvy: Which play did you enjoy most? 

Dick: My Fair Lady! I was Stage Manager and my girlfriend at the 

time played Liza Doolittle. We had so much fun during those times. 

Levvy: So tell me about the theatre on Arenas? 

Juli Ragsdale 

Dick: Well that was Willie Rhine’s. And we did all of their cast parties 

and we gave them employee prices because they weren’t making 

that much money. So we all hung out here at Streetbar and Willie 

and I became really great friends. 

Levvy: Willie is one of the nicest guys you could ever know! 

Dick: Yes, he really is! A wonderful, wonderful man. 

Levvy: So backing up just a bit, when did you leave Michigan for California? 

Dick: I left Michigan in 1973 and moved to Santa Monica. And I was there for 

15 yrs, then moved here in 1990. Then we opened the bar in 1991. My friend 

Hank Morgan came into Palm Springs and we bought the bar together. 

Levvy: Wow, and now 25 years later here we sit. Can you imagine 

all the fun you have brought to Palm Springs.? I mean Southern 

California, no, actually the entire world, because Palm Springs is 

such a destination city! Streetbar is known Internationally! 

Dick: (laughs)...I am still thinking about Streetbar Puerta Vallarta! 

Levvy: That is a lot of dedication, Dick. Well let’s talk a little about 

The Center. It has come such a long way in the past few years. I am 

so happy that you are on the board now. 

Dick: Mike Thompson has done such an amazing job at the helm. 

Since September, we have raised over a million and a half dollars 

for the refurbishing and decorating the new building and we are 

almost ready to move in. The new building is going to open up so 

many new possibilities. John McDonald and Rob Wright bought the 

building and are leaving it to The Center in a trust. The Food Bank is 

going to stay where it is. I mean it works really well where it is. 

Levvy: I always see Joe McClaskey and Bob Mooney volunteering 

at the Food Bank. 

Dick: Yes and Streetbar is a drop off point for the Food Bank. And 

when you bring in canned goods or other foods you get $1 off your 

first drink. 

Levvy: Your Staff is amazing and very proficient. I love that most 

of them have been with you for so many years. That says a lot 

about you, Dick. 

Dick: (points to the morning bartender, Michael Brown) Micheal 

has been with us for 15 years or longer. 

Levvy: A couple of years ago you received a star on The Palm 

Springs Walk of Stars and it is on Arenas Road! Well deserved, 

because of all the humanitarian achievements. 

Dick: Yes right next to George Hamilton! Barbara Keller has a star 

there too! 

Levvy: Also Jeffery Sanker has a star on that corner. 

Dick: I also have a star for Les Dames du Soleil. 

Levvy: Wow! I never thought about that! You might be the 

only person to ever have gotten two stars! And speaking of 

stars,Streetbar has had entertainment such as Ann Walker, ‘Nathan 

and Andy’ and Jimmy James to name just a few. But Streetbar also 

has stars in entertainment like Mona Caywood, Lindsey Karg and 

more. 

Dick: Yes we do have fun at Streetbar! 

Levvy: So Streetbar is having its 25th Anniversary. Can you tell us about that? 

Dick: Well every day we are going to have drink specials. And 

we will have the Jägermeister Guys, a different one every day! On 

Thursday, the 25th of August, we are having Brian Scott and we are 

going to have Mona Caywood and maybe Dana Adkins. 

Levvy: Well Dick, thank you for your time this morning. It is hard 

to imagine running a business for 25 years. That is the definition of 

success and charity! So a huge thank you from all of Palm Springs.

Peter Mikulak is one of the most prolific artists anyone 

could possibly meet. He is always on the go painting 

and getting involved or creating charity events. Aneka 

Brown and I were at WANGS going over some details 

about her party when it hit me like a brick, that Peter 

needed to meet Aneka! That was the beginning of an 

amazing creative synergy. Recently Peter joined the 

LIVE Magazine Mixer held at LULU California Bistro 

featuring covergirl Aneka Brown to showcase some 

of his fashions. Take a look and listen to Peter tell us 

about his new charity venture, ‘30 Days of Good’ 

Peter says, “I’m doing a month long project with KMIR. 

“30Days Of Good!” For 30 days straight I’m going to 

leave my house and give my time to be of service. At 

the end if each day I’m going to create a piece of art 

influenced by my experience that day. At the end if the 

month i will have 30 pieces if art. KMIR is Going to host 

an exhibit at the station first week in September. The 

silent auction will raise money for selected causes. 4 

chosen people will determine who is most deserving. 

My interaction with these organizations will be televised 

daily with live feeds on KMIR’s Facebook page. Was

Food Drive Doubles 

Annual Donations to The Well in the Desert 

2016 PSRAR Food Drive Donations Double Food and financial donations 

more than double from previous year. 

The Palm Springs Regional Association of REALTORS® (PSRAR) Special Events 

Committee held its annual Food Drive to benefit The Well in the Desert. 

Nineteen local real estate offices served as drop off points and participated in 

a competition to raise funds for this local charity. 

The fundraising event began on June 15th with a kick-off party sponsored 

by Acme House Company. Now in its ninth year, the goal was to exceed 

2015’s total of $20,084.00. The response was quite overwhelming, bringing in 

$43,347.60 in food, water and financial donations. “We are extremely proud 

of our members for stepping up and working together to accomplish such 

an amazing total. REALTORS® are highly vested in their communities and this 

level of giving is a true example of how much they care”, said 2016 PSRAR 

President Jim Webb. 

The first place winner of the competition was Windermere-Leaskou Partners, 

retaining the title for the second year in a row. Bennion Deville Homes - Palm 

Spring South garnered second place and a new award, The Heart of the 

Food Drive. It was presented to recognize their outstanding efforts. Third 

place went to Bennion Deville Homes - Palm Springs Main. Also, an award 

was created for Most Creative Collection/Drop Location, which was given to 

Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices - Palm Springs. 

The Well in the Desert is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization providing 

daily nutritious meals, emergency food assistance, weekly supplemental 

food distribution and a wide array of services through advocacy to those 

affected by poverty, including the working poor, the homeless, seniors, the 

handicapped and others in need throughout the western end of the Coachella 

Valley. The Well in the Desert is funded solely by grants and fundraising. Palm 

Springs Regional Association of REALTORS® is honored to contribute to their 

mission.

chiccy mixer at one of my favorite restaurants - Lulu California Bistro.

What’s It All About, 

Alfie: In 1992, I moved from Portland to Hollywood. I had just been diagnosed 

HIV-positive and won a large settlement from a company that had discriminated 

against me. I participated in a speaking circuit for people who wanted to 

improve their health including HIV, cancer, etc. I also spoke at schools on the 

topic of bullying.

Alfie?! 

My first memory of Alfie Pettit was when he was in full Arial Trampway regalia, 

whizzing up and down Palm Canyon on a segway wearing high heels in the 

middle of Summer, promoting his spectacular sell-out production, Carnival 

Cabaret. 

Segways are hard enough to ride on in the first place. I should know, I fell off 

one a few years back while riding around West Hollywood … I literally landed in 

a bush. Not cute. 

Anyway, so there was Arial (Alfie) dressed up to the nines in scorching triple 

digit heat, fearlessly riding at full-speed in and out of the crowd at Village Fest 

handing out flyers for his Palm Springs extravaganza. That’s dedication for you! 

Little did I know then, that Arial/Alfie was one of the powerhouses behind 

Carnival Cabaret and someone who would become a dear friend of mine in 

years to come. 

A friend of mine introduced me to the world of celebrity autographs. We had 

been in business together and then I decided to form Alfie’s Autographs of 

Hollywood. I instantly had the town hardwired with a host of valets, maitre d’s, 

and paparazzi and more sharing information. Before you knew it I had a very 

successful mail order business and one of the first online. I bought all of the 

“Hollywood” keywords from Yahoo and secured them for years. The LA Times 

did a front-page story on me and the rest is history. I was on Leeza Gibbons, 

CNBC money tonight, and American Journal, Hardcopy, etc. I met everyone from 

Elizabeth Taylor, and Madonna, to Marlon Brando. I became very ill in 2000 and 

sold the business along with the condo and moved back up to the Northwest. I 

bought a place up at Mount Saint Helens and waved my magic feathers, Burmite 

incense and healed myself. Next I moved to Thailand for nine years and invested 

in property. Thailand was an amazing experience. 

Sean: You are known around town as Arial Trampway. How was Arial born? 

Alfie: I gave birth to Arial at The White Party 1998 actually. She is obviously 

inspired by the Arial Tramway, which I used to live next door to. My friends and 

I drove down from West Hollywood in my Volvo P1800 and discovered her by 

accident. I mean, drag was nothing new for me. I had done it for years, but I 

always gravitated to what I refer to as “Guila Drag” … ya know, campy drag. This 

however, was the first time that I had someone professionally apply my drag 

and I loved the results. I still do. 

A former professional autograph collector he turned a fun fad into a profitable 

business venture in 1992 with ‘Alfie’s of Hollywood’ based at The Hollywood 

Roosevelt Hotel in the heart of Tinseltown. This pretty much sums up the Alfie 

I have come to know - He’s a go-getter, a true businessman, and a star in the 

making. 

However as you read this, you will discover his journey hasn’t always been an 

easy one. 

Sean: So Alfie, or should I say Arial Trampway, recently met Hillary Clinton? 

Alfie: Yes, I wanted to meet her as Arial… I thought that it would be a great 

memory. I’ve always loved a powerful woman and a woman that has been 

scorned and has risen above the ashes. I think as gay men we can relate with 

the struggles of women and the glass ceiling. Upon meeting her, I felt an instant 

bond. Clinton is steadfast and true and she stands up for what she believes in. 

Having always been so close to my mother, it’s very easy to relate to women. 

Fast forward to today… Alfie had heads turning in Beverly Hills when he 

attended a Hillary Clinton Fundraiser held at the home of Creative Artists 

Agency (CAA) super agent, Bryan Lourd. 

Looking resplendent as he strutted through the million dollar mansion and 

home to the A-list event, Alfie, dressed as Arial, literally caught the attention 

and the hearts of the who’s who as he greeted Clinton with a handshake 

captured on film for all to see. 

Not many entertainers I’ve met in the past can command a crowd like Alfie 

does. Melanie Griffith, Rachel Zoe and even Condé Nast queen - Anna Wintour, 

OBE took an interest in Alfie dressed as Arial Trampway. 

Sean: How long have you been dressing in drag? 

Alfie: You see, I was raised on a farm in rural Washington. I recall my mother 

dressing me in drag at a very young age multiple times. My sister would help 

and I was like a baby doll for them. Mom took multiple pictures of this and I 

cherish them to this day. One time mother sent me to school as Shirley Temple, 

but I stuffed my bra more and told them I was Dolly Parton. God bless my 

mother and her sense of humor. She would get out of the tub and chase 

me and say mom is going to give you some “sure titty”. I would yell, “I 

don’t want no sugar titty mama.” We were always singing and 

dancing to music and mom always had candles lit and the 

shag carpet raked. I remember watching her put on 

her makeup and I would fix the back of her 

bouffant hairdo. 

And to top it all, Mr. Pettit 

is being honored with his 

own star by the prestigious 

Palm Springs ‘Walk of Stars’ 

on September 6. Not to 

mention being featured in 

‘The Men of Carnival Cabaret’, 

a KMIR/NBC produced halfhour 

documentary, presented by 

six-time Emmy award winner David 

Reese and co-hosted by the gorgeous 

Thalia Hayden... 

I caught up with Alfie for a LIVE Magazine 

exclusive chat, and wow … folks, you have to read 

this! 

Sean: You lived in Hollywood before Palm Springs. What was it 

that drew you to Tinseltown?

Sean: I find it interesting that you collect cars? 

Alfie: Well, I was raised on motorcycles, Go figure. My father was a professional 

motorcycle hill climber in the early ‘70s. I inherited the gear head gene I guess 

but I, however, love classic cars. 

Alfie 

Sean: How did you come to land in Palm Springs? 

Alfie: I first came here in 1992 and knew I wanted to retire here. I felt a 

connection to the history of this town and the Native American energy. The 

mountains were magical. I heard someone say that once you’ve slept in the 

shadows of the San Jacinto Mountains you’re forever to return. 

I wanted to live on the mountain. I wanted the lifestyle. I came to see my friend 

in The Fabulous Palm Springs Follies in its second year. I remember listening to 

Patsy Cline the whole time I was here. I felt the nostalgia of the city. I moved 

here this time for the gay [substance addiction] recovery community, which is 

like no other that I have ever seen. I got clean and sober on 11/11/11 and now 

I’m coming up on five years. I had lived here part time since 2006,and knew 

about the recovery community but was scared to enter it. This last go-round, I 

knew I wanted something different. This last time I had to decide between Las 

Vegas and Palm Springs, I’m certain that I made the right choice.

Sean: How did you become a part of Carnival Cabaret? 

Alfie: A couple years ago I decided to get a pink Cadillac. It had always been a 

dream of mine; that and to create a persona. At this time I was asked to join 

Carnival Cabaret as one of the “girls”. I quickly realized that I wanted a bigger 

piece of the pie. In exchange for my social standing in the community and my 

ability to put butts in chairs, I was offered 40% of Carnival Cabaret. Dan Gore 

had noticed me and sought me out. I knew Gypsy from back in the day and 

knew that I wanted to be part of anything with his name on it. I mean, Gypsy 

is a legend! Full circle moment, I had no stage experience and I recall the 

first day at Carnival, sitting with Gypsy and feeling terrified. Luis Camacho 

Extravaganza brought me to Dan Gore. Lewis also is a partner in Carnival. 

He choreographed me for a month leading up to my big debut on 

April 1, a year and a half ago. (Louis is well known for his work on 

Madonna’s Blonde Ambition Tour). When I started I would open 

the show with the dance number and close it with a finale and 

two of the other “girls”. Gypsy and I always start the show 

holding pinkies. 

One of the performers in the finale had my pants on 

and I had his pants on. We got off the stage and in 

between coming up for bows he says “Take your 

pants off “and I’m like “what?” “Take your

pants off!” So I did and we switched. The pants I put on were inside out. I could 

not get them to button and all I could hear was Gypsy saying “She’s not going to 

make it, she’s not going to make it, girl you’re not gonna make it.” We laughed 

our asses off and I went back out on the stage with no shoes on. Our running 

joke ever since has been “She’s not gonna make it.” 

My last performance was in May and my position with Carnival has evolved into 

a grassroots position. I now spend most of my time connecting the dots at social 

functions and parties. People say, “Oh you’re the guy with the pink Cadillac.” I’ve 

always been grassroots. I love connecting people. 

Sean: I understand that you are finally getting your own star on Palm Canyon? 

Alfie: Yes. I’m getting the star on the Palm Springs “Walk of Stars” and I could 

not be more ecstatic about it. This is a huge honor and I am deeply humbled 

by it. My mother and father get to witness this while they are still alive and that 

is so important to me. My mother, being my biggest fan, is even more excited 

than I am. She has basically put up most of the money for the star. All the 

money that would normally be raised for the star will be given 100% to charity, 

split between DAP and The LGBT Community Center of the Desert. I have 

always tried to do my part where I can when it comes to charity. When I lived 

in Thailand I did many shows raising money for people who could not afford 

HIV medicine. Last year the Gypsy Rose, and all proceeds went to Desert AIDS 

Project. I’ve also done shows for Angel View. I’ve also worked alongside Barbara 

Keller for an evening at my house. I work closely with Sober in the Sun raising 

funds for the round up. I’m happy to say I am co-chair for entertainment this 

year. I’m also involved with the Human Rights Campaign and on the committee 

for Palm Springs.

Sean: If you could be remembered for one thing, what would that be? 

Alfie: If am to be remembered for anything it would have to be for my 

continuous love through caring and giving. I am blessed for having lived my life 

doing what I love to do, helping people, lifting them up. I believe in fairness, 

integrity, truthfulness, loyalty and I always root for the underdog. I read Louise 

Hay’s book “You Can Heal Your Life” back in 1989 and it really changed my 

perspective in regards to everything; including how I view money and people. 

Now, the flow of money is only a matter of perspective and I understand that 

abundance is unlimited. For example, when I find money on the ground I pick it 

up, kiss it to god and say “thank you”. There’s a respect and a responsibility that 

comes with abundance as well. Money flows to me, through me, and back out 

into the universe. 

As for people, well, we are all doing the best that we 

can with what we know at that moment in time. If I find 

compassion in the face of others character defaults, I hope 

they will have the same for me. Most people are wounded 

in some form or another and life is much easier when I look 

for similarities rather than differences.

Clint Eastwood Directs Feature Film About The 

Life of Heroic Pilot Chesley “ Sully” Sullenberger 

Clint Eastwood directs Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Sully”. Sullenberger, who 

became an American hero when he landed his disabled jet on the Hudson 

River, saving the lives of everyone aboard. 

The film from a screenplay by Todd Komarnicki is based on the book 

Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters, by Sullenberger and 

Jeffrey Zaslow. The film was produced by Eastwood and Tim Moore, 

for Malpaso; Frank Marshall, under the Kennedy/Marshall banner; and 

Allyn Stewart, for Flashlight Films. Flashlight’s Kipp Nelson and RatPac- 

Dune’s Steven Mnuchin served as executive producers.
