HANDS ON EXPLORERS II (Ages 9-10) Contact: Margaret Goodson Tuition: $135 per student Text: None Supplies: Syllabus: Class will include lots of activities. WRITING/LANGUAGE ARTS LITERATURE BASED WRITING (Writing Composition, Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading/Literature) Contact: Mrs. Patsy Conley Tuition: $125 per student Required Supplies: Middle and high school level students, and those elementary students who want to do writing composition, MUST HAVE Microsoft Word and email access for all composition assignments One 1 1/2” three-ring binder Textbook by Patsy Conley, printed from an email attachment you will receive before classes begin, and assembled in the 3- ring binder (see above) by the first day of class Appendix A (also by Patsy Conley) printed from an email attachment and added to the 3-ring binder by the first day of class Paper topic guide printed from an email attachment and added to the 3-ring binder One pack of notebook paper for work written and notes taken in class which will be kept in the textbook binder with textbook pages. Reinforced notebook paper is best. It is a little more expensive, but with all the use our textbook will suffer during the course of an entire year, pages will take a beating and the reinforced edge will help keep repairs to a minimum. Pen (Blue or Black only) Pencil Books for paper topics - as directed in class ELEMENTARY LEVEL: Students learn English Grammar; their instruction in Grammar will add to and reinforce grammar instruction in Latin, and vice versa. Students learn basic writing rules and, through literature, become acquainted with examples of good writing. Though not required at this level, students have the opportunity to write one paragraph papers and five paragraph papers. The subjects covered for report card transcripts are: Grammar, Reading, Vocabulary, Literature, and (optionally) Composition. MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL: Students learn the rules of good writing, increase their reading and writing vocabulary, compose one and five paragraph papers based on topics relating to their reading of good literature, and perfect their grammar skills. The subjects covered for report card transcripts are: Grammar, Reading, Vocabulary, Literature, and Composition. HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL: Students perfect the rules of good writing, compose five paragraph papers on topics pertaining to assigned literature reading, and increase their reading and writing vocabulary. The content of reading assignments varies from year to year. For 2016-2017, the high school reading list will cover works of ancient Greek literature: the Iliad, the Odyssey, the tragedies of Aeschylus and Sophocles, and the Great Dialogues of Plato. The transcript subjects covered include: English, Ancient Greek Literature, Composition, and Vocabulary. The St. A curriculum is largely influenced by that of Mother of Divine Grace School. Students will practice reading and writing skills as they experience the joy that comes from engaging their minds in the beauty of language and literature. Class time will include the teacher reading poems and short stories aloud to students, and the class discussing the use of language and meaning. For homework, younger students will practice the very basics of writing using the Writing Our Catholic Faith series, and they will advance in reading as they follow the Spalding Method as set forth in The Writing Road to Reading. Each week, Mary Joyce will introduce students to new sounds and spellings, and for older students, new spelling and vocabulary lists for the week. Each student will bring home one level-appropriate book each week from the Spalding Leveled Readers, along with flashcards made in class to help in practicing the new sounds and spellings for the week. The books will be kept in a class library; each week, your child will bring home one book to practice reading the new phonemes for the week. When a child brings back one book, he/she will take home another. Advanced students may bring home more than one book at a time. Older or more advanced students will continue to practice their handwriting and reading skills for homework, practice basic grammar (workbook to be determined), and memorize poems from Laura Berquist’s The Harp and Laurel Wreath, in addition to reading other age-appropriate material beginning with those works recommended in The Writing Road to Reading. A very important aspect of the St. A curriculum is the flexibility to adapt quickly to suit students’ changing needs. Students who need more time at a particular level will find ample materials to suit their needs; on the other hand, students who wish to move ahead more quickly will find plenty of fresh material to feed their enthusiasm. Mary Joyce will keep parents informed as she observes needs arise. Required books: For all students: Writing Our Catholic Faith. Parents should choose the appropriate level. If we have enough students to order 10 or more copies of a level, the books are only $5 each, so PLEASE DON’T ORDER THIS YET--on August 4 (two weeks before classes begin) we’ll take a head count and perhaps order the books as a group in order to get the discount. Students can move through the levels of the series at their own pace. For students ages 7 and 8: The Harp and Laurel Wreath by Laura Berquist - $16 on Amazon.com, $20 at Mother of Divine Grace FOREIGN LANGUAGE SPANISH Teacher: Luisana Bethencourt Tuition: $125 per student Luisana Bethencourt is a native of Venezuela and a former homeschooling mother of 9 who has taught Spanish in various settings for many years. She’ll be using Realidades, a highly respected program that has a lot of resources for students and teachers--including online resources that students can use during the week to practice at home. During class, students will practice their skills through conversation, songs, and games. Students will have weekly homework, a midterm exam, and a final exam (younger students will not have tests). Luisana will give parents lots of feedback about how their students are doing in class and what they can do to improve their skills more quickly. Luisana recognizes that in learning a second language, a 55-minute weekly class with no complementary study won't take students far. She gives students very specific homework (very simple for the younger ones) from the workbook and encourages them to practice with their families in the car and at home--she has lots of recommendations for supplemental materials that can help with this. LATIN Contact: Mary Draper Tuition: $125 per student Mary has created a curriculum that provides a very clear and detailed assignment for each day of the week. Students will receive a workbook that they will use for homework to do extensive vocabulary practice, grammar practice, and reading of Latin using the Lingua Latina textbook--a fantastic book that teaches students to read from the very beginning and provides much more reading practice than any other textbook available. staugustinehomeschoolraleigh@gmail.com
