St. Augustine Homeschool Enrichment: 2016-2017 Academic Year
General Information:
St. Augustine Homeschool Enrichment is a group of families and professional Catholic teachers, working in full communion with the
Roman Catholic Church and the Diocese of Raleigh, dedicated to offering quality academic courses to families on a budget. Our
middle school courses will prepare students for college preparatory high school, and and our high school courses for college. Some
class material and homework will involve Catholic tradition and doctrine; while students will never be asked to profess beliefs that are
not theirs, all students are expected to do assigned work and behave respectfully during religious classroom activities such as prayers.
St. Augustine will meet on the campus of St. Joseph Catholic Church at 2817 Poole Road in Raleigh on Thursdays from January 12
through May 4, 2017 (off Mar. 2 & Apr. 20). Our school day begins after the 8 AM Mass at St. Joseph’s and the following potluck
breakfast and communal intercessory prayer, to which all are welcome. Here’s a map of the campus/classes: (coming soon I hope,
technical difficulties...).
Classes are offered from 9:45 AM to around 5:30 PM. Core classes meet in the morning, and elective classes meet mostly in the
afternoon. Once you have registered, you’ll receive a confirmation email letting you know that we’ve enrolled your student(s).
Course Information: see our class schedule and calendar here: St. A Spring 2017 Schedule and Calendar
Core Courses in Science, Language Arts, and Foreign Language are offered at four levels: Pre-School (ages 3-5); Elementary (ages 6-
8 & 9-10), Middle School (ages 11-13), and High School (ages 14-18). Core Course options are:
Science (Elem.: Hands on Explorers; Middle: Chem for Kids, General Sci; High School: Biology, Chemistry)
Writing (includes Grammar, Vocabulary, Literature, and Writing)
Foreign Language: choose Spanish or Latin.
Electives for Spring 2016: Art (Mixed Media; Studio Drawing; Studio Painting); History; Government; Latin: Caesar & Prose
Composition; Debate; Soccer; and Latin Schola. See here for class descriptions, required materials, and payment information for
classes: St. A 2016-2017 Courses
Students age 10 and older may register for Study Hall (free of charge) for any class period—students in study hall MUST BE
REGISTERED, so that we can ensure their safety, and they must be in study hall at the assigned times. A student may not be
registered for more than two study halls--our space is very limited. Students also may not be registered for consecutive study
halls; it is too boring! and we have found that behavior issues are the result. If you register students for study hall, please be sure to
send plenty for them to work on, and if possible send headphones or earbuds so that they can listen to music while they work--the
room is not silent.
St. Augustine is a drop-off program—parents may drop off students for class. Students who are dropped off MUST BE ENROLLED
in classes or study hall FOR THE ENTIRE TIME they are dropped off. Parents who cannot or would rather not return for lunch
(12:45-1:15) can pay $5 per week per family for supervision of any children under 14. You can pay for lunch on a week-by-week
basis, or pay a discounted rate up-front for the whole semester ($60). For more details about our policies, see here: St. A Policies.
St. Augustine Fees:
To register, please fill out the form here: St. A Spring 2017 Registration. Please wait to send payment for classes until you receive an
email confirming your registration. Here is a list of fees that may help with planning: St. A Fees & Tuition Spring 2017.
$25 annual per family ARCH registration fee, paid at ARCH Registration. All St. Augustine’s families must be registered with
ARCH (www.arch-raleigh.com). ARCH provides our liability insurance coverage (along with a host of other nice things—thank you
ARCH!!). To join ARCH, one member of your family will need to complete the Diocese of Raleigh’s Safe Environment Training; we
can help you arrange this. If you would like help, please let us know. If you joined ARCH in the fall, you don’t need to do anything
for the spring.
$25 per semester per family St. Augustine Registration Fee. Your registration fee makes a donation to St. Joseph’s Church to help
with their costs and provides basic supplies for our group. For now, please make checks payable to Mary Draper.
$5/week/family or $60/semester (a slight discount), for children under 14 who need supervision at lunchtime. Payments to Mary
Draper.
Tuition: Each core class is $125 per student per semester (Science: $135). Elective classes vary in cost depending on the materials
teachers need to purchase and the amount of prep work for teachers. For some classes, you will need to purchase books or materials -
we will try to keep costs to a minimum. See the St. A 2016-2017 Courses page for details.
Audit Option: For large families on tight budgets, we have an audit option. After you enroll 3 students with a teacher, you will have
the option of enrolling more students with that teacher at a discounted audit rate of $25. Full enrollment includes fifteen 55 minute
classes, classwork, graded assignments, and grade reporting to parents. Audit includes class time and class handouts/projects only.
WRITING/LANGUAGE ARTS
LITERATURE BASED WRITING (Writing Composition, Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading/Literature)
Instructor: Patsy Conley
Tuition: $125 per student
Required Supplies:
Middle and high school level students, and those elementary students who want to do writing composition, MUST HAVE
Microsoft Word and email access for all composition assignments
One 1 1/2” three-ring binder
Textbook by Patsy Conley, printed from an email attachment you will receive before classes begin, and assembled in the 3-
ring binder (see above) by the first day of class
Appendix A (also by Patsy Conley) printed from an email attachment and added to the 3-ring binder by the first day of class
Paper topic guide printed from an email attachment and added to the 3-ring binder
One pack of notebook paper for work written and notes taken in class which will be kept in the textbook binder with textbook
pages. Reinforced notebook paper is best. It is a little more expensive, but with all the use our textbook will suffer during the
course of an entire year, pages will take a beating and the reinforced edge will help keep repairs to a minimum.
Pen (Blue or Black only)
Pencil
Books for paper topics - as directed in class
Required Books: See the book lists here: Literature Based Writing Book Lists 2016-2017
*High School students will need all the books on the list; Elementary and Middle students can choose their books.
ELEMENTARY LEVEL (10:45): Students learn English Grammar; their instruction in Grammar will add to and reinforce grammar
instruction in Latin, and vice versa. Students learn basic writing rules and, through literature, become acquainted with examples of
good writing. Though not required at this level, students have the opportunity to write one paragraph papers and five paragraph
papers. The subjects covered for report card transcripts are: Grammar, Reading, Vocabulary, Literature, and (optionally) Composition.
MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL (11:45): Students learn the rules of good writing, increase their reading and writing vocabulary,
compose one and five paragraph papers based on topics relating to their reading of good literature, and perfect their grammar skills.
The subjects covered for report card transcripts are: Grammar, Reading, Vocabulary, Literature, and Composition.
HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL (9:45): Students perfect the rules of good writing, compose five paragraph papers on topics pertaining to
assigned literature reading, and increase their reading and writing vocabulary. The content of reading assignments varies from year to
year. For 2016-2017, the high school reading list will cover works of ancient Greek literature: the Iliad, the Odyssey, the tragedies of
Aeschylus and Sophocles, and the Great Dialogues of Plato. The transcript subjects covered include: English, Ancient Greek
Literature, Composition, and Vocabulary.
FUNDAMENTALS OF READING, WRITING, GRAMMAR, & LITERATURE (ages 6-8): 10:45
Instructor: Mary Joyce Cable
Tuition: $125 per student
Required book:
Writing Our Catholic Faith. Parents should choose the appropriate level. The books are $10 each from Universal Publishing,
http://www.upub.net/Faith-Grade-1-Prodview.html. Students can move through the levels of the series at their own pace--you can
order the next level when you feel your student is ready. We have some copies available at a discount ($6) while supplies last.
For older students (ages 8+ or so), you may want to consider purchasing The Harp and Laurel Wreath by Laura Berquist - $16 on
Amazon.com, $20 at Mother of Divine Grace. This extensive collection of poetry, arranged in order to suit students’ advancement in
poetry appreciation, is a great resource for homeschooling students of all ages. Many of the poems Mary Joyce offers as options for
students to memorize can be found in this book.
Other materials:
2-inch plain white binder (the kind with a clear sleeve on top) and a stack of index cards for making flash cards
Pencils
The St. A curriculum is largely influenced by that of Mother of Divine Grace School. Students will practice reading and writing skills
as they experience the joy that comes from engaging their minds in the beauty of language and literature. Class time will include the
teacher reading poems and short stories aloud to students, and the class discussing the use of language and meaning.
For homework, younger students will practice the very basics of writing using the Writing Our Catholic Faith series, and they will
advance in reading as they follow the Spalding Method as set forth in The Writing Road to Reading. Each week, Mary Joyce will
introduce students to new sounds and spellings, and for older students, new spelling and vocabulary lists for the week. Each student
will bring home one level-appropriate book each week from the Spalding Leveled Readers, along with flashcards made in class to help
in practicing the new sounds and spellings for the week. The books will be kept in a class library; each week, your child will bring
home one book to practice reading the new phonemes for the week. When a child brings back one book, he/she will take home
another. Advanced students may bring home more than one book at a time.
Older or more advanced students will continue to practice their handwriting and reading skills for homework, practice basic grammar
(workbook to be determined), and memorize poems from Laura Berquist’s The Harp and Laurel Wreath, in addition to reading other
age-appropriate material beginning with those works recommended in The Writing Road to Reading.
A very important aspect of the St. A curriculum is the flexibility to adapt quickly to suit students’ changing needs. Students who need
more time at a particular level will find ample materials to suit their needs; on the other hand, students who wish to move ahead more
quickly will find plenty of fresh material to feed their enthusiasm. Mary Joyce will keep parents informed as she observes needs arise.
FOREIGN LANGUAGE
SPANISH (Middle School: 9:45; High School: 10:45)
Contact: Luisana Bethencourt
Tuition: $125 per student
Required Text: for Middle & High School: Realidades I text and workbook
Elementary level: No text (curriculum provided by Luisana)
Luisana Bethencourt is a native of Venezuela and a former homeschooling mother of 9 who has taught Spanish in various settings for
many years. She’ll be using Realidades, a highly respected program that has a lot of resources for students and teachers--including
online resources that students can use during the week to practice at home.
During class, students will practice their skills through conversation, songs, and games. Students will have weekly homework, a midterm
exam, and a final exam (younger students will not have tests). Luisana will give parents lots of feedback about how their students
are doing in class and what they can do to improve their skills more quickly.
staugustinehomeschoolraleigh@gmail.com Page 7

If you'd like to have a look at the curriculum, see here:
Textbook: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0131340913?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_detailpages00
Workbook: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0130360015?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_detailpages00
Siblings can share the book and make copies from the workbook. Luisana recognizes that in learning a second language, a 55-minute
weekly class with no complementary study won't take students far. She gives students very specific homework (very simple for the
younger ones) from the workbook and encourages them to practice with their families in the car and at home--she has lots of
recommendations for supplemental materials that can help with this.
LATIN (Elementary Level: 11:45; Middle School: 9:45; High School: 10:45)
Contact: Mary Draper
Tuition: $125 per student
Required Book (all levels): Lingua Latina, Pars I: Familia Romana textbook
Any edition is fine. Make sure you get the textbook and not one of the grammar or exercise books. Siblings may share a book.
New books may sell as cheap as around $20.
Additional Supplies:
3-ring binder (any size—they can use the same binder as for other classes) and loose-leaf paper; 3 dividers; and pencils--NO PENS
OR SPIRAL NOTEBOOKS ALLOWED—too messy.
Mary has created a curriculum that provides a very clear and detailed assignment for each day of the week. Students will receive a
workbook that they will use for homework to do extensive vocabulary practice, grammar practice, and reading of Latin using the
Lingua Latina textbook--a book that teaches students to read from the very beginning and provides much more reading practice than
any other textbook available.
In class, we will learn Catholic hymns and prayers in Latin and do lots of reading. Students will have a short vocab and grammar quiz
each week, review quizzes along the way, and a semester exam.
HISTORY/GOVERNMENT
AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL: FROM 13 COLONIES TO 50 STATES for Ages 6-8 (11:45)
Instructor: Mary Joyce Cable
Tuition: $125 per student
No text or materials required.
THE THIRTEEN COLONIES: During the fall semester of a year long course on American history and geography, students will
explore the early history and geography of the United States of America as they memorize and are guided by the first verses of
“America the Beautiful.” Learning about the difficulties and blessings the colonists encountered, students will follow along in the
daily life of an eight year old child living in the early Colonial period and continue to follow the lives of the family members as the
colonies come to the decision of independence and move toward revolution.
We may even get a visit from a Revolutionary or Civil War soldier!
Class time will include lots of stories, and presentations by the more advanced students. Mary Joyce will offer a variety of homework
options (homework will not be required) for the different ages and levels of advancement in reading and writing: from coloring pages
to crafts to reading and memorization. She will have a class library where students may check out books about topics ranging from
Squanto and the First Thanksgiving to the Midnight Ride of Paul Revere and the Constitutional Conventions.
During the spring semester, students will learn how the 13 colonies became the 50 States that we know today as the United States of
America.
ANCIENT HISTORY for Ages 10+ (2:10)
Instructor: Eric Steele
Tuition: $125 per student
Required text ($25): The Story of Civilization, you can see it here:
https://www.tanbooks.com/index.php/the-story-of-civilization-vol-1-the-ancient-world.html
The text does not include any of the ancient civilizations of the East; Eric will provide this material through class lectures. There will
be a semester exam and a final exam; other than reading the text, there will not be weekly written homework to be turned in, but
parents who would like their students to do weekly homework to reinforce what they have learned in each chapter may purchase the
Test Book for the curriculum ($15), which includes a test and answer key for each chapter, and check students’ work; or have the
students check their own work. Tan also offers other great supplementary materials, although many of them are for younger students.
This semester long class is the first half of a year-long course in Ancient History. It will be primarily formed for the middle school and
early high school age range (ages 11-14/15); the Tan curriculum is a bit simplistic for the older end of the range, but Eric’s lectures
will be well-suited to this older group. Eric loves history! And he will convey this enthusiasm to his students.
Students will need notebook paper and pencils/pens for taking notes in class
(spring semester) ECONOMICS for Ages 12+ (1:15)
overall vocal character of the Schola. Participants will receive vocal instruction as a group, and occasionally some individual
instruction as well. Dr. Warren has many years' experience in music and education at many levels, and it is her goal to provide an
encouraging yet challenging environment in which she can draw out the best from each student.
The group will have many opportunities for performance in Extraordinary Form Latin Masses, including the 1st Sundays afternoon
Mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral.
The Schola is open to students ages 12+, and adults are welcome! Class begins at 3:15; it is our hope that students enrolled in
traditional schools and parents may also be able to take advantage of the opportunity. If your child is under 12 but you think he/she
would do well in the Schola, please feel free to go ahead and register, and talk to Dr. Warren. She has worked with many younger
students too.
Contact: Susan Amalong
Text: still to be determined, probably The Art of Argument
Logic & Debate will consist of formal training in logical thinking, instruction in debate techniques and strategies, and debate practice.
in logic to develop strong arguments for use in their presentations/competitions. The second part of class will involve instruction in
various techniques of debate, corresponding mostly to the techniques used by the debate leagues that students will be involved with in
their competitive debate, and in practice of their techniques and strategies through presentations and mock debates.
Active debating is optional--students will have opportunities to observe and to participate in a variety of debate
OF READING, WRITING, GRAMMAR, & LITERATURE
Instructor: Mary Joyce Cable
Tuition: $125 per student
Required books:
For all students:
Writing Our Catholic Faith. Parents should choose the appropriate level. The books are $10 each from Universal Publishing,
http://www.upub.net/Faith-Grade-1-Prodview.html. Students can move through the levels of the series at their own pace--you can
order the next level when you feel your student is ready.
For students ages 7 and 8:
The Harp and Laurel Wreath by Laura Berquist - $16 on Amazon.com, $20 at Mother of Divine Grace
staugustinehomeschoolraleigh@gmail.com Page 14

AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL: FROM 13 COLONIES TO 50 STATES for Ages 6-8 (11:45)
Instructor: Mrs. Mary Joyce Cable
We may even get a visit from a Revolutionary War soldier!
During the spring semester, students will learn how the 13 colonies became the 50 States that we know today as the United States of
America.
