(fall semester) GOVERNMENT for Ages 12+ (1:15) Instructor: Eric Steele Tuition: $125 per student Text: Book of Readings: Supplementary Readings for Declaration Statesmanship Government is a semester long course. The curriculum is formed around a great collection of primary documents; class time will consist of discussion of the assigned reading for the week and of topics of interest to the class. The first part of each class will consist of a brief presentation and discussion of various aspects of logic; students will use this training in logic to develop strong arguments for use in their presentations/competitions. The second part of class will involve instruction in various techniques of debate, corresponding mostly to the techniques used by the debate leagues that students will be involved with in their competitive debate, and in practice of their techniques and strategies through presentations and mock debates. Active debating is optional--students will have opportunities to observe and to participate in a variety of debate Fees are still to be determined--they will depend on the costs of membership in the various organizations we will need to be involved with in order for our students to take full advantage of the opportunities in our area. ADVANCED LATIN: CAESAR? (1:15) *Prerequisite: A high school level Latin class Instructor: Mary Draper Tuition: $125 per student Book: TBA Additional Supplies: Students in all classes will need a 3-ring binder (any size) and loose-leaf paper; 3 dividers; and pencils--NO PENS OR SPIRAL NOTEBOOKS ALLOWED—too messy. MATH ENRICHMENT Contact: Jennifer D’Andrea & Margaret Goodson If we have enough interest, teachers will meet with groups of students to play games and learn new strategies for success in math. Please let us know if you’re interested, and we’ll post new details about the program as the teachers tailor it to the ages of the students who are interested. ETIQUETTE/BALLROOM DANCE *Etiquette & Ballroom Dance is postponed until Fall 2017 We apologize for the change! We will use the 1:15 time slot for our Logic & Debate program for Spring 2017. Etiquette & Ballroom Dance will resume in Fall 2017. Contact: Patricia Guin Make sure your student is comfortable attending a friend or sibling’s wedding! ELEMENTARY/MIDDLE SCHOOL ART (10:45; 11:45; 1:15, 2:10, 3:05) Contact: Tuition: $125 per student Students will explore the art traditions of various cultures and the techniques of famous artists by creating their own religious art using a variety of media. Middle School students will be completing the projects at a more advanced level of technique. Materials and supplies will be provided. Syllabus: Elementary/Middle School Art Syllabus STUDIO DRAWING (10:45, 11:45, 1:15, 2:10) Instructor: Loree Lam Tuition: $135 per student Loree will inspire and draw out the artist within each student. Classes will be given basic drawing assignments to work on at home and in class, and during class time Loree will work individually with each student to encourage and guide skills and artistic instinct. She’ll have an easel for each student, and they will work from pictures, still life, and even live models. One period is $135, two periods is $200. SOCCER (1:15, 2:10) Contact: Abby Steele Tuition: $100 per student (full semester--15 weeks) or $40 per student (5-week block) 1:15: ages 4 to 8 or 9 2:10: ages 9 or 10 to 13 *If we have enough interest, we’ll add another class; then the age breakdown would be: Ages 4-7; Ages 8-11; Ages 12+ Students will need flat sneakers or cleats (no fashion sneakers, girls!); one soccer ball per family; and shin guards--you can find these online, at stores like Wal-Mart, or at sporting goods stores like Dick’s. Shin guards that fit a little small are better than too big. Please be sure your child has a nice big water bottle that’s full! Choose the level that you think is most appropriate for your child. Abby has tons of experience coaching different levels of experience and ability; please give her a call if you have any questions about what class would be best for your child. She has offered to allow families to commit to classes in 5-week increments, rather than the full 15 weeks, if that will be more convenient. If you are interested in this option, please let Abby know and she’ll give you more information. LATIN SCHOLA (3:15-4:30) Instructor: Dr. Patricia Warren Tuition: $150 per student Dr. Warren will choose performance pieces, drawing from both Chant and polyphony, to suit both the individual voices and the overall vocal character of the Schola. Participants will receive vocal instruction as a group, and occasionally some individual instruction as well. Dr. Warren has many years' experience in music and education at many levels, and it is her goal to provide an encouraging yet challenging environment in which she can draw out the best from each student. The group will have many opportunities for performance in Extraordinary Form Latin Masses, including the 1st Sundays afternoon Mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral. The Schola is open to students ages 12+, and adults are welcome! Class begins at 3:15; it is our hope that students enrolled in traditional schools and parents may also be able to take advantage of the opportunity. If your child is under 12 but you think he/she would do well in the Schola, please feel free to go ahead and register, and talk to Dr. Warren. She has worked with many younger students too. Dr. Warren will also offer private voice and flute lessons during the day. Dr. Warren holds her Bachelor’s Degree in Flute and Voice from the University of Duquesne; her Master’s Degree in Sacred Music and Voice, also from the University of Duquesne; and her DMA in Choral Conducting and Vocal Performance from the University of Georgia. She has many years’ experience in directing and teaching music privately, in schools, and for churches.
