The Hoddle Grid Activity
The Hoddle Grid is
the layout of the
streets in the
central business
district (CBD) of
Melbourne. Named
after its designer,
Robert Hoddle, the
grid was laid out in 1837, and later extended.
It covers the area from Flinders Street to Queen Victoria Market,
and from Spencer Street to Spring Street.
The grid was defined largely by the geography of the area. It was planned to span a
gently sloping valley between small hills (knolls) (Batman's Hill, Flagstaff Hill and
Eastern Hill) and roughly parallel to the course of the Yarra River. Elizabeth Street,
Melbourne in the center of the grid was built over a gully and has therefore been
prone to flooding.
The wide main streets were also to accommodate the large number of bullock carts
that would ride through the center of town preventing them from holding up horse
drawn traffic when making right turns.
In the 1860s, surveys extended the district, incorporating the region of similarly laid
out streets bounded by Victoria Street, Dudley Street and the Queen Victoria Market.
There are FIVE main streets running
East to West (bottom to top):
Flinders Street
Collins Street
Bourke Street
Lonsdale Street
La Trobe Street
There are also FOUR smaller streets, or
lanes, which separate each city block:
Flinders Lane
Little Collins Street
Little Burke Street
Little Lonsdale Street
12 Dandenong High School
There are NINE main streets which
run North to South (left to right):
Spencer Street
King Street
William Street
Queen Street
Elizabeth Street
Swanston Street
Russell Street
Exhibition Street
Spring Street
These are easy to remember, as
they follow a pattern.
Spencer
King – William
Queen – Elizabeth
Swanston (in the middle)
Russell
Exhibition
Spring (at the end)
On the grid below, label the streets of Melbourne’s CBD
LaTrobe Street
Sudoku
Sudoku may seem difficult at first glance, but actually it is not as hard as it
looks!
The aim is to fill in the whole grid – and depending on the difficulty of the
puzzle this can be quite easy (just counting and checking), or more tricky
puzzles require a bit more logic and reasoning.
Fill a number in to every cell in the grid, using the numbers 1 to 9.
You can only use each number once in each row, each column, and in
each of the 3×3 boxes
