Acadet is transformed into officer material and
a gentleman over the three years that he trains
at the National Defence Academy. The training
equips him with mental, moral and physical
attributes to cope with battlefield challenges
and lead troops to victory in conventional, nonconventional
and asymmetrical conflicts. The
three-year course is split into six terms during
which a cadet learns science, technology, arts and
military subjects. Each term, his training regimen
includes physical conditioning such as drill,
physical training, swimming and horse riding
according to the approved syllabus and an entire
gamut of games and adventure activities. For a
facing page: An extract from the Outline Calendar for the 2016 Autumn Term
cadet, a term consists of 22 weeks of training that
is covered in eight cycles of 13 ‘D’ days each —
utilised for outdoor training as well as academic
classes. This adds to 104 contact days in a term
as mandated by the Jawaharlal Nehru University
(JNU) which awards the cadet with a Bachelor’s
degree. The training branch, headed by the
Principal Director Training, is the nerve centre
of all military and outdoor training matters of
the Academy. It comprises of six training teams.
Besides the three Services which have their
respective training teams — the Army Training
Team (ATT), the Naval Training Team (NTT)
and the Air Force Training Team (AFTT), there
is a Joint Training Team (JTT) to oversee the joint
training aspects of the curriculum of the Academy
and the Physical Training and Equitation Training
teams which are responsible for training in these
two aspects. The Education Branch, headed
by the Principal, is responsible for academics.
On successful completion of the course, Army
cadets proceed to the Indian Military Academy
at Dehradun, Naval cadets to the Indian Naval
Academy at Ezhimala and Air Force cadets to
the Air Force Academy at Dundigal, Hyderabad.
After completion of one year of training at their
respective academies, they are commissioned as
officers into their respective Services.
