EUYO > SOLOISTS Photo © Nina Large 20 Lorenza Borrani Violin The Florentine violinist Lorenza Borrani has been a leader of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe since 2007. She has performed as director, concert master, soloist and chamber musician in the most important concert halls and seasons in Europe and around the world, including, in the last two years, The Berlin Philharmonie, The Edinburgh Festival, Aldeburgh Festival, Styriarte Graz, Citè de la Musique in Paris, London’s Southbank Centre, The Koln Philarmonie, and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. From 2005 she has played with Orchestra Mozart, with whom she performed as a soloist under the direction of Claudio Abbado. As well as an international career as a soloist under the direction of conductors including Yuri Harohnovich, Emmanuel Krivine, Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Claudio Abbado, she has also worked with notable chamber musicians including Isabelle Faust, Janine Jansen, Hélène Grimaud, Daniel Hope, the Emmerson Quartet, András Schiff, Pierre- Laurent Aimard, Irina Schnittke, Tabea Zimmermann, Mario Brunello, Christian Tetzlaff, and Pavel Gililov. Lorenza also teaches at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, where she originally studied under the guidance of Piero Farulli, Alina Company, Zinaida Gilels and Pavel Vernikov. In 2007 she founded the Spira Mirabilis Project (www.spiramirabilis.com) Lorenza plays on a Santo Serafino violin (1745), courtesy of the Fondazione ProCanale di Milano. Paul Watkins Cellist Paul Watkins, an alumnus of the EUYO (1988 – 1989), enjoys a distinguished career both as a cellist and as a conductor, and in the 2009–10 season became the first ever Music Director of the English Chamber Orchestra. As solo cellist he performs regularly with all the major British orchestras including the London Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic, London’s Philharmonia, and City of Birmingham Symphony. Outside the UK he has performed with the Netherlands Philharmonic, Melbourne Symphony, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, and the RAI National Symphony Orchestra of Turin. Recent highlights include his debut at Carnegie Hall performing Brahms’ Double Concerto with Daniel Hope, and appearances with the Royal Flemish Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony, Philharmonia, and Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. He also premiered (and was the dedicatee of) Mark-Anthony Turnage’s new concerto with the Royal Flemish, Tampere, and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestras and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig. A dedicated chamber musician, he was a member of the Nash Ensemble from 1997 to 2013, and joined the Emerson String Quartet in 2013. He has given solo recitals at the Wigmore Hall, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, South Bank Centre, Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall, and Queens Hall in Edinburgh. In 2009 he signed an exclusive contract with Chandos Records. Recent releases include the Delius, Elgar, and Lutoslawski concertos, and discs of British and American music for cello and piano. In 2014 he was appointed artistic director of the Great Lakes Music Festival of Detroit. Mr. Watkins plays a cello made by Domenico Montagnana and Matteo Goffriller in Venice, c.1730.
Photo © Susanne Diesner Kai Frömbgen Clarinet Born in Koblenz in 1977, Kai had his first oboe lesson at the Luxemburg Conservatoire with Norbert Mattern. He received the first prize of the federal competition “Jugend musiziert” three times, in 1991, 1993 and 1995. After passing his A-levels, he started studying with Professor Christian Wetzel at the School of Music and Drama “Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy” in Leipzig. He received scholarships from the Foundation of the German People, the Villa Musica and the Richard Wagner Society. Kai played in the European Union Youth Orchestra for two years, in 1998 and 1999. In 1999, he was offered the principal oboe position in the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz and he then became the principal oboe of the Bamberger Symphonikern – Bayerische Staatsphilharmonie in 2003. Kai is a keen chamber musician and performs with Frank- Peter Zimmermann, Christian Zacharias, Mirijam Contzen, Christoph Eschenbach and the wind ensemble Sabine Meyer. In 2005, 2006 and 2007, he was the principal oboe of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, directed by Claudio Abbado. Kai Frömbgen became a member of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe in January 2012. Stefan Schweigert Bassoon Stefan Schweigert, born in Kaiserslautern in 1962, started playing the bassoon in the age of 10 as a pupil of Alfred Rinderspacher. From 1981 he studied at the Musikhochschule Hannover with Klaus Thunemann. Since 1985 he has been Principal Bassoon of the Berliner Philharmoniker. He has appeared as a soloist with his orchestra, and also with other ensembles including Camerata Bern. He is a member of András Schiff’s ‘Cappella Andrea Barca’ and has worked on a number of occasions with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and participated in Gidon Kremer’s Chamber Music Festival at Lockenhaus several times. For many years he played in Sabine Meyers wind ensemble, the Scharoun Ensemble Berlin and with different chamber music groups of the Berliner Philharmoniker. Schweigert has taught at the Berliner Philharmoniker’s Orchestra Academy since 1987 and at the Musikhochschule Freiburg from 2004 to 2006. In 2012 Kai was appointed Professor at the Musikhochschule in Saarbrücken and since 2014, he has also been a Professor at the Robert Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf. EUYO > SOLOISTS 21
