From small beginnings
The John Martin Group, one of
Scotland’s most prominent and
respected privately-owned motor
businesses, takes its name from the man
who founded it, Chairman, John Martin.
Having served his apprenticeship as
a motor mechanic with Rossleigh,
John Martin established his own
servicing business in a lock-up in a
lane in Edinburgh. The lock-up was
the Group’s real foundation, from
which John Martin established his
own benchmark of always going
the ‘extra mile’ for customers. He
went on from here to sell his very
first new car in 1968, a Volvo from
a garage in Edinburgh which he
had named ‘Belmont’ after a rather
imposing house in the same area.
After almost 40 years, the Belmont
name continues to live on in the
Edinburgh dealership network,
expanding from its humble origins to
become a multi-franchise group with
turnover in excess of £160 million,
and multiple sites across Scotland. The
Group is now one of Scotland’s top 200
businesses. An additional trading name
of JM Accident Repair Centre has joined
the fold over the past four decades
and represent 15 franchises across the
country, incorporating some of the
most prestigious names in our business.
We were first appointed with the
Rolls-Royce franchise in 1985, and
in 1993 were recognised with the
prestigious award of Rolls-Royce Dealer
of the Year, the first and only time this
award has ever been presented.
Spanning the central belt of Scotland,
the Borders and Grampian region, the
Group now employs over 700 staff
who together deliver over 16,000 new
and used cars each year, and ensure the
maintenance and care of many more.

The ‘modest entrepreneur’
Although he is undoubtedly one
of Scotland’s most successful
businessmen, John Martin, the Group’s
founder and Chairman, prefers
not to seek the public limelight.
He is much more at home working with
the Group’s Directors in overseeing the
ongoing building and refurbishments
of new and existing sites, ensuring that
every site meets his exacting standards.
Success on the scale of the John Martin
Group takes persistence, much hard
work, and absolute dedication. John
Martin has worked for over forty years
to establish his company as a dominant
and respected motor trade business.
In recent years, John Martin has had
to overcome what has been both a
personal and professional tragedy with
the sudden loss of son and heir, John
Martin Junior, who was much loved
and respected by the Martin family and
all the staff of the John Martin Group.
Subsequently, John Martin Senior has
seen the company through this loss
and the subsequent restructuring,
emerging as dedicated as ever with
his employees remaining steadfastly
loyal. The John Martin Group enjoys
the benefit of some of the UK’s
most experienced motor trade staff
- 24% of employees have over
10 years service. In fact, the second
person John Martin ever employed
retired in 2007 after 41 years of service.
The principles which John Martin still
applies to his business are those he
learned in the beginning. As he puts it,
“the difference between success and
failure is in the preparation of the car
in the first place, and then in the way
the customers are handled from the
moment they come into the dealership.”
It is a tribute to John Martin’s steadfast
dedication to customer service that
customers from his original lockup
‘down the lane’, established in
the sixties, remain loyal clients of
the John Martin Group today.

Rolls-Royce Phantom Saloon
Since the production of its very first
car, Rolls-Royce has built the very best
motor cars of their time, becoming
the classics of today. The 21st century
Rolls-Royce had to be worthy of a
new millenium. In January 2003, the
Rolls-Royce Phantom Saloon arrived;
it was a momentous occasion and
a milestone in automobile history.

The car is very much a British
production. The design was developed
in London at studios known as
‘The Bank’, named after the building’s
previous function. Many of the
designers and engineering team
are British, and the car rolls off the
production line at the purpose-built
facility at Goodwood in Sussex.
Much research was undertaken and
the design team set out to ensure the
Phantom was a true Rolls-Royce, with
long wheelbase and bonnet, short front
overhang, large wheels and a presence
which is both confident and imposing.

A luxurious cabin is combined with
silent refinement and immense
‘waftability’, provided by its quiet
and smooth V12 engine.
With cues taken from the past but
a truly contemporary design, the
Phantom is indeed a modern classic.
This perfectly proportioned
Rolls-Royce is ideal for the owner
and, indeed, driver of today.
The use of an advanced aluminium
space frame for the body/chassis
unit has meant rigidity on a scale
that for a car of the Phantom’s
size and weight is unequalled.
Powered by the mighty V12 6.75-litre
engine producing 453bhp and 531
lb-ft of torque, the Phantom Saloon
takes just 5.7 seconds to reach 60mph,
and will continue to an electronically
limited top speed of 149mph.

Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupé
When creating the Phantom Drophead
Coupé the Rolls-Royce Design Team
drew inspiration from the classic J-class
racing yachts of the 1930s. The fastest
yachts of their time, these pedigree
vessels possessed a spectacular
combination of ability, versatility and
fitness for purpose. Thanks to the use of
the finest materials in their natural state,
they were also exceptionally beautiful.
It’s this sense of functionality, immediacy
and exposure to the elements
our designers admired, and what
they have striven to capture in the
Phantom Drophead Coupé’s thrilling
lines. The use of steel and wood
- design highlights first seen in the
100EX experimental car of 2004
– cement the maritime theme.

Honesty and integrity were paramount
in the design process, which is why the
Phantom Drophead Coupé has a softtop,
rather than a folding metal roof so
beloved by the rest of the car industry.
As Ian Cameron, Rolls-Royce’s
Chief Designer, says, ‘It was very
important that we didn’t create a
folding hardtop, because that is an
unclear proposition. Our customers
wouldn’t own a reversible jacket, so
why would they buy a convertible that
looks like a Coupé? Besides, there’s
nothing more romantic than sitting
in a soft-top car and listening to the
rain pattering on the cloth hood’.
It was also important for the styling
to give a clearer hint at the Phantom
Drophead Coupé’s performance,
which is why the front is more rakish
and the radiator grille is a more
streamlined shape. A car to be enjoyed
in a more spontaneous, less formal
way, it’s fitting that the Phantom
Drophead Coupé’s vibrant character is
expressed in such unmistakable style.

100EX
The 100EX was the first experimental
car to be produced by Rolls-Royce
Motor Cars since the BMW Group
became custodians of the marque in
1998, and subsequently launched the
all-new Phantom at the company’s
new home in Goodwood in 2003.
Experimental models have long been
a feature of Rolls-Royce, particularly
between 1919 and 1957 when a
number of motor cars were given
the EX name. Unlike a concept
car, an experimental car functions
more fully and was originally used by
Rolls-Royce to test and evaluate new
systems, components and features.

The 100EX was designed as an
open-top, four seat, two-door
drophead with a 9-litre V16, 64 valve
engine throbbing under the bonnet.
It was produced to celebrate the
100 year anniversary of Rolls-Royce
in May 2004. A strong nautical
theme featured both inside and
outside the car, complimented by
polished aluminium on the bonnet
and windscreen surround.
Shorter than the Phantom by
165mm and 71mm lower, the
100EX has a graceful side profile
with a characteristic dynamic rise in
the waistline over the rear wheels
and lines that sweep upwards
towards the front of the motor car.
Traditional Rolls-Royce ‘waftability’
was created visually - the sense that
the 100EX has the power to whisk
its passengers swiftly to a maximum
speed in a truly relaxed manner.
The car has toured extensively around
the globe in the last two years to
outstanding acclaim. Such has been
the demand, that a version of the
car is now in production, with the
first vehicles delivered in late 2007.

101EX
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has unveiled
a second experimental car, the 101EX,
at the 2006 Geneva show. It has
been hand-built to explore a potential
design direction for a future coupé
model, which is now confirmed to
commence production in late 2008.
The 101EX uses the same lightweight
aluminium construction that was
developed for the Phantom, although
the body is shorter by 240mm.
A full four-seat coupé and twin coach
doors add to the car’s rakish good
looks and streamlined coupé profile.
The roofline is lower than the
Phantom’s, with a shallower glass area.
Streamlined styling has similarities with
the 100EX, starting at the front with
the famous grille, discreetly reclined,
and extending back across a brushed
aluminium bonnet and windscreen
surround. The rest of the sleek
bodywork is finished in dark tungsten.

New 21-inch forged aluminium
wheels complete the exterior look.
Inside, the cosseting interior has been
designed for elegance and maximum
comfort for all four occupants.
Machined aluminium, fine leather and
rosewood and red oak veneers are
used throughout. Slimline bucket seats
offer outstanding comfort for front
passengers while the exceptionally
spacious rear seat delivers intimate
comfort for two. Privacy is assured
by the sweeping C-pillars.
The design team has experimented
with interior lighting on the 101EX,
and the car features a ‘starlight
headliner’ made up of hundreds
of fibre optic cables to give the
impression of a star filled night sky.
The 101EX balances high technology
with hand craftsmanship. It illustrates
the position of strength from which
Rolls-Royce operate, and points the
way for potential new models.

Rolls-Royce’s Goodwood facility in Sussex.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Limited - The Company
When the new company came
into being, a factory was needed to
create the new car. The Goodwood
facility in the 42-acre grounds of the
Earl of March’s famous Goodwood
Estate, which has its own motor
racing heritage, was ideal.
It’s hard to believe that a centre of
engineering and technical excellence
exists in such peaceful surroundings,
the factory blending effortlessly
with the natural surroundings, which
include landscaped gardens and a
causeway spanning a peaceful lake.

The roof lines have been kept low,
allowing the facility to blend in with
its surroundings. Part of the building
has been built below ground and
by covering the exposed roof with
sedum plants, it changes colour with
the seasons. However this is not just
aesthetic as it also acts as insulation.
Other environmentally friendly
touches can be found throughout
the site - the lakes cool the building’s
air supply and make up part of the
facility’s drainage, whilst glass walls
provide so much natural light that
artificial lighting is kept at a minimum.
The Phantom Saloon makes
several stops on its journey
through the Goodwood factory.

The facility itself is a fascinating mix of
state-of-the-art technology and old
fashioned craftsmanship. Specialist
craftsmen and women work alongside,
and in harmony with, some of the
world’s most sophisticated equipment.
In the wood workshop, the Phantom’s
bespoke interior begins to take on
its very own character. The finest
veneers cover 1.7 square metres of
the car’s interior, and this intricate
woodwork is undertaken by the 29
skilled experts who take as long as
30 days to produce all the separate
wooden elements required.

The same high levels of skill and
attention to detail are found in the
leather workshop, where handpicked
hides arrive from a specialist tannery.
Many of the expert leather workers
and seamstresses were sailmakers and
saddlers before joining the company
and their craftsmanship is obvious.
We strongly recommend that our
customers experience the Goodwood
factory and all its customer facilities
for themselves, an experience that
we are more than happy to arrange.

Rolls-Royce craftsmen and women hand pick and hand finish the marquetry veneer.

Jewellers of distinction.
Founded in 1869, Cairncross the Jewellers
remains a family run business renowned
the world over for outstanding quality
and exclusivity. Our staff are experienced
in all aspects of jewellery, watches,
silverware and crystal and are always
happy to offer advice and unhurried
personal attention.
