When you graduate with a degree, diploma or certificate 

from the University of London you will receive two 

important documents – your Final Diploma (the parchment 

you receive on graduation) and a Diploma Supplement. 

The Final Diploma 

• Indicates that you were registered with the 

University of London and awarded a University 

of London degree, diploma or certificate. 

• Gives the name of the University of London Colleges 

that developed the syllabus and provided assessment. 

• Features the University of London crest and 

the Vice-Chancellor’s signature.

‘Postgraduate degrees in law are highly 

desirable qualifications: they 

demonstrate professional expertise 

and personal achievement. When 

awarded by the University of London, 

these degrees serve as proof of 

excellence and high standards. 

Enhancement of a career in law is the 

obvious goal for many. But equally the 

goal can be development of a career in 

diverse professional fora, such as 

government, the civil service, or the 

private sector. 

These can now be accessed equally by 

law graduates, non-law graduates, and 

people with professional experience. 

The availability of nested degrees 

allows access to the LLM simply on the 

basis of success in the PGCert and 

PGDip, thus offering real open access 

to those who do not carry a traditional 

law graduate CV. The pace of 

achievement is flexible over five years, 

and adaptable to the qualifications and 

circumstances of each individual 

student: from a law graduate wishing 

to achieve the LLM within one year to 

the non-qualified professional who can 

begin with the PGCert and progress to 

the LLM as quickly or slowly as 

professional and financial obligations 

allow. Gentle or accelerated access 

both offer a choice of over 60 courses, 

the widest choice in the market. And 

this choice can be packaged in a 

generic degree or a degree with one of 

30 specialisations. Or, even, three 

degrees of three specialisations within 

the course of the LLM programme! I 

am proud to be directing a unique 

programme that offers the opportunity 

to study law at postgraduate level to 

anyone who is willing and able to put 

in the hard work required – and my 

team and I are all here to make sure

Postgraduate Laws Programme, you 

become part of an international 

community of high academic

The academic management for the 

programme is provided jointly by 

the Department of Law of Queen 

Mary University of London and the 

Faculty of Laws at UCL. Senior 

academics from the University of 

London and the UK plan the 

structure and content of the 

programme, develop and write study 

materials, compile the e-resources 

(with videocasts, online tutorials, and 

revision tutorials), set the examination 

papers and mark scripts.

specialised field of law, such as 

commercial law, banking law,

law. Law firms tend to prefer job 

candidates with an LLM from a good 

University because it indicates that a 

lawyer has acquired advanced, specialist 

legal training and is qualified to work in 

a multinational legal environment. 

Career advancement 

for non-law 

graduates 

Non-law graduates or experienced 

professionals pursue an LLM to gain 

expertise in areas of the law that 

regulate their current or prospective 

careers. Our programme offers more 

than 30 specialisations to choose from 

as a means of demonstrating a generic 

awareness of law or specialist 

knowledge applicable to a specific field 

of activity: for example, public law for 

government; international law for 

international or regional organisations; 

human rights for NGOs; maritime law 

for shipping; banking and finance law 

for banks and financial institutions; 

private law for diverse careers from 

human resources to management. The 

choice of courses is extensive and their 

application to the career market one of 

the widest available. 

Programme structure 

Our programme is built up from 

courses which cover a particular aspect 

of law. Each course is divided into four 

self-contained but integrated ‘modules’. 

To gain an LLM you study four full courses 

which make up 16 modules; for the 

Postgraduate Diploma you study 10 

modules, chosen from no more than 

four courses; for the Postgraduate 

Certificate you study five modules, again 

chosen from no more than four courses. 

Progression routes 

Once you have passed the five 

modules for the Postgraduate 

Certificate, you will automatically be 

eligible for progression to the 

Postgraduate Diploma. Similarly, once 

you have passed the 10 modules for 

the Postgraduate Diploma, you will 

automatically be eligible for progression 

to the LLM. To see how this works in

Is this programme 

for me? 

Our programme is for everyone who 

has the desire and motivation to study 

hard and succeed. The programme 

requires you to be highly motivated 

and disciplined. You need to be able to 

master complex problems 

independently. Some students find such 

self-directed study challenging, but all 

agree that it is incredibly rewarding.

Flexible study and support 

The Postgraduate Laws Programme is 

flexible: you are not required to attend 

tutorials (although it is strongly advised 

that you do), complete assignments or 

come to London. As examinations are 

held twice a year in over 180 countries, 

you can sit them locally wherever you 

are based, and whenever you are ready. 

Flexible admissions 

You can apply to join the programme 

at any time of year and start whenever 

you receive your study materials. You 

do not need a law degree to apply: 

students with a good non-law degree 

can start on the Postgraduate Diploma 

and progress to the LLM. Students 

without an honours degree can start 

on the Postgraduate Certificate. For 

entry requirements please see page 14. 

Flexible study period 

You have between one and five years 

to complete the LLM and the 

Postgraduate Diploma; and from six 

months to five years for the 

Postgraduate Certificate. 

Flexible assessment 

Exams are held twice a year in May and 

October and can be taken locally. Each 

module is assessed by a 45-minute 

unseen written exam with a choice of 

questions. There is no oral exam or 

dissertation. Exams are set and marked 

in London. If you fail a module you only 

need to resit the failed module, not the 

entire course. 

Flexible payment 

You do not have to pay in full when 

you start your first course, unless you 

wish to. Most students choose the payas-you-go 

option, spreading the cost 

by paying for each new module in turn. 

How many times can 

I repeat exams? 

You may repeat an exam for the same 

module only once. If you fail it a second 

time, your registration with the University 

of London for the Postgraduate Laws 

Programme will cease. But of course 

you may decide not to sit a failed 

module for a second time and start 

afresh with a new module 

How much time 

will I need? 

It is up to you how you schedule 

your studies, depending on your work 

and personal commitments. However, 

it is recommended that you will 

need to dedicate around 120 hours 

for each module. 

How many modules 

should I study at one 

time? 

Most students choose to study one 

course (all four modules) twice a year. 

In this way, you can complete the 

entire LLM within two years. 

Number of modules 

examined 

There is no requirement to be 

examined at any particular exam 

session. You can choose when to be 

examined on any module, so long as 

you complete your study within the 

period of registration. 

Is CPD available? 

The University offers credit bearing 

individual modules from the 

programme that can be taken on a 

stand-alone basis. You may take up 

to four individual modules. Please see

Accreditation of prior 

learning (APL) 

APL requests may only be made based 

upon a Postgraduate Certificate in Law 

or Postgraduate Diploma in Law

Specialisations 

You don’t have to specialise but if you 

would like to become a specialist in a 

particular field of law, you’ll need to 

follow specific courses. This way, the 

specialisation will be named on your 

final certificate for the award, for 

example the ‘Master of Laws (LLM) 

in the specialisation: International 

Business Law’. If you follow the 

progression route from Postgraduate 

Certificate in Laws to Postgraduate 

Diploma in Laws to the Master of Laws 

(LLM), each award might be in a 

different specialisation. 

To have a specialisation named on your 

certificate, you need to study and 

satisfy the Examiners in a certain 

number of courses or modules within 

that specialisation: at least three 

complete courses for the Master of 

Laws (LLM), at least eight modules for 

the Postgraduate Diploma in Laws and 

at least four modules for the 

Postgraduate Certificate in Laws.

Access is a key principle for all distance

The programme offers the opportunity 

to gain the same prestigious 

qualification awarded to students 

enrolled with one of the University’s 

Colleges but without coming to 

London. It is open to a wide range of 

students and assessed to the same 

high standard as a programme within 

one of the University’s Colleges. 

There are no requirements for you to 

come to London, so no relocation or 

travel costs and you can continue 

working full time. In addition, any 

number of students can join this 

programme, so if you meet our 

entrance requirements you will be 

offered a place. 

Am I eligible? 

In order to be eligible to register for the 

LLM degree, Postgraduate Diploma in 

Laws or Postgraduate Certificate in 

Laws, you must satisfy our entrance 

requirements. These can be satisfied 

through a wide variety of qualifications 

from around the world. Furthermore 

relevant work experience can also be
