‘Postgraduate degrees in law are highly
desirable qualifications: they
demonstrate professional expertise
and personal achievement. When
awarded by the University of London,
these degrees serve as proof of
excellence and high standards.
Enhancement of a career in law is the
obvious goal for many. But equally the
goal can be development of a career in
diverse professional fora, such as
government, the civil service, or the
private sector.
These can now be accessed equally by
law graduates, non-law graduates, and
people with professional experience.
The availability of nested degrees
allows access to the LLM simply on the
basis of success in the PGCert and
PGDip, thus offering real open access
to those who do not carry a traditional
law graduate CV. The pace of
achievement is flexible over five years,
and adaptable to the qualifications and
circumstances of each individual
student: from a law graduate wishing
to achieve the LLM within one year to
the non-qualified professional who can
begin with the PGCert and progress to
the LLM as quickly or slowly as
professional and financial obligations
allow. Gentle or accelerated access
both offer a choice of over 60 courses,
the widest choice in the market. And
this choice can be packaged in a
generic degree or a degree with one of
30 specialisations. Or, even, three
degrees of three specialisations within
the course of the LLM programme! I
am proud to be directing a unique
programme that offers the opportunity
to study law at postgraduate level to
anyone who is willing and able to put
in the hard work required – and my
team and I are all here to make sure

Postgraduate Laws Programme, you
become part of an international
community of high academic
achievers whose affiliation with the
University sets them apart.
The academic management for the
programme is provided jointly by
the Department of Law of Queen
Mary University of London and the
Faculty of Laws at UCL. Senior
academics from the University of
London and the UK plan the
structure and content of the
programme, develop and write study
materials, compile the e-resources
(with videocasts, online tutorials, and
revision tutorials), set the examination
papers and mark scripts.
Professor Xanthaki, the Programme
Director, offers monthly videocasts
with news and advice, and monthly
online interactive clinics.
