Project Description
Caribou 6462.30
The Caribou Connector will be a new 2.95 mile alignment around the town of Caribou. Starting at
route 161, the project will continue west toward route 1. The new alignment will have a bridge span
over route 1 with on and off ramps, continue towards and span route 89 before looping around and
connecting to Rt. 1/89.
The proposed connector will be a limited access two lane roadway with twelve foot travel lanes and
eight foot shoulders. To address concerns of the public and the town, a composite bridge arch will be
incorporated into the design to allow for passage of farm equipment from one side of the connector to
the other as well as a large box culvert for the passage of snowmobiles and grooming equipment.
For Longfellow Brook, a bridge span of at least 1.2X bank full width is being proposed.
Project will be broken into two segments:
1. MaineDOT Design (Conventional design – bid – build project) Station 4438+00 – 4435+00
2. Design/Build: A process by which a single entity provides both the design and construction
through the use of a single contract between the agency (MaineDOT) and the design/build
contractor. Station 4435+00 – 4493+50
