Inspire Ideas with Great Books
Teachers and students are the heart and soul of
the Great Books Foundation. Nothing is more
important to us than working closely with educators
to engage young students in reading and thinking.
Starting in kindergarten and through the early
grades, Junior Great Books ® brings the power of
Shared Inquiry to students of all abilities, fueling
their imaginations and encouraging them to ask
questions. Through collaboration and discussion,
students can share their thoughts and opinions
while listening to the ideas of others.
As students advance, we give them an opportunity
to discover and explore essential ideas in ethics,
citizenship, and world culture. We give them the
skills to think critically about new and unfamiliar
points of view as expressed through fiction,
nonfiction, and poetry.
Together we seek an active discussion that allows
students and teachers to understand the influence
of a wide range of great thinkers and writers such
as Martin Luther King Jr. and Lois Lowry.
Together we demonstrate through the regular
practice of Junior Great Books, Great Books
Roundtable, and Great Books Seminar the ways
in which engagement with literature drives social
and emotional development and our capacity to
understand the world from different points of view.
The Great Books Foundation was established in
1947 and became a leader in educational reform.
Great Books President Joseph Coulson with students
attending the Great Books Summer Program at Stanford.
We continue to lead through our methodology,
books, school collaborations, outreach, and
community participation.
In schools that invite our books and method of
learning, in partnership with the teachers who care so
deeply about their students, we at Great Books stand
for the importance of talking to students about the
great ideas and values of the past and their absolute
necessity in shaping the future.
Join us as we continue to inspire great ideas, dialogue,
and lives.
Discover the Power of Shared Inquiry
Improve teaching and learning across the curriculum
In Shared Inquiry, students—guided by their teacher—explore a text by discussing open-ended questions and
sharing responses and insights. This method of teaching and learning helps students learn to think about what
they read, express and develop their ideas, and learn from one another. Shared Inquiry enhances all the basic
language arts skills—reading comprehension, critical thinking, writing, speaking, and listening—and enables
students to learn more across the curriculum.
Teachers embrace a collaborative approach that
helps them:
• Engage students in higher-level reading, thinking,
and discussion
• Monitor and support comprehension for students
at all reading levels
• Integrate critical thinking and socio-emotional
learning into their curriculum
• Naturally assess students’ progress toward state and
district learning standards
Students who participate in Shared Inquiry build
proficiency in these key areas:
• Reading for meaning
• Utilizing reading comprehension strategies
• Supporting ideas with text evidence
• Considering different points of view
• Listening to others and responding appropriately
• Thoughtfully considering different points of view
• Transferring ideas from discussion to formal
writing
• Contributing to a collaborative, respectful
classroom environment
“Possibly the best PD I’ve ever attended. I loved
the fact that the focus of the training wasn’t
on the curriculum itself but more so on the
Shared Inquiry methodology that makes this
curriculum—or any other—come alive! After the
training, I felt better equipped as a teacher and
more enlightened as a thinker.”
“A Great Books discussion encourages students to form
opinions, but then requires them to justify and expand
their point of view. At the same time, they’re learning
that other people’s opinions are worth hearing, and that
what they learn by listening and delving deeper into a text
challenges their thinking and helps them develop initial
responses into sophisticated theories.”
After doing a few Great Books Roundtable units, Mr. Fisher has noticed that
some of his students struggle to make notes during the first reading, whereas
others do it comfortably. He uses both the Support and Challenge box
suggestions that appear in the Stage 1 First Reading card (card 12 ) to address
his students’ diverse learning needs. Mr. Fisher begins by writing the following
prompts on the board:
Mr. Fisher reads the first two pages of “Props for Faith” aloud with the following interjections.
Great Books Roundtable Road Map • Level 2
Mr. Fisher knows that to keep the students engaged in the reading, it is important to refrain from
interrupting the flow of the story and to stop only when students seem to struggle with comprehension.
He reads without interjecting until further into the story, when he notices that no one is marking
questions during a passage rich with interpretive issues (the highlighted passage on pages 33–34).
“never stayed up.” That detail helps me see Renate
pretty clearly.
Mr. Fisher: Okay. As we read, you may find it helpful to visualize, or
picture in your mind, what is going on in the story. Try
to imagine sights, smells, sounds, and feelings.
(After reading to “. . . had lived half of his five years
without a father” [p. 32].) I’m not sure who this Trudi Mr. Fisher models how to make
Montag person is. I’ll put a question mark here and read notes about questions while reading
on to see if she is important to the story.
(Support).
(After reading to “. . . the old Greeks and Romans”
[p. 33].) Before we continue, let’s share some of the Mr. Fisher includes students’ notes in
questions we have so far.
the modeling process (Support).
Kurt: I want to know why the narrator tells us why Adolf
Hitler wasn’t mentioned in her class.
Mr. Fisher: Okay, make sure you put a question mark next to that.
James: I put a question mark next to the second paragraph on
page 32. I wonder why the doctors kept Renate for over
a year.
Mr. Fisher: Did anyone mark a place where they agreed or
disagreed with something?
Mary: I did. I marked on page 31 that I agreed with Frau
Brocker. I don’t think the midwife is Renate’s real
mother either.
Mr. Fisher: Let’s continue reading and marking questions. If you’ve Mr. Fisher prompts students using the
been marking where you agree or disagree with
multiple-note option to share their
something, continue with that, too.
reactions to the text (Challenge).
Mr. Fisher: (After reading to “But I didn’t mean it . . .” [p. 34].) Did
anyone mark a question on this page? (No response.)
Let’s read it again. (Rereads from “‘Why not?’ I shouted Mr. Fisher pauses to reread a difficult
. . . ” to “ . . . I couldn’t bring out one word” [pp.
passage that students have not marked
33–34].)
(Support).
I have a question. Why does “something hot and sad Mr. Fisher shows students how a
and mean” rise inside Hanna when she thinks about passage contains opportunities for
Renate playing with Sybille? (Continues reading to the questions by briefly modeling the
end of the page.) Did anyone mark a question this time? questioning process and having
Simon: I marked next to “Her limp seemed worse than ever
students follow suit (Support).
before” because I wonder why Hanna thinks this. (A few
more students share their questions.)
Mr. Fisher: Did anyone who has been marking agreement or
Mr. Fisher encourages students who
disagreement note anything in this passage?
are marking the higher-level prompt to
Zora: I put a check mark next to the part where Renate’s face
contribute their ideas (Challenge).
is “red, then ashen.” I agree with how Renate reacts to
Hanna. I think I would act that way, too. (Another
student explains a mark of agreement or disagreement.)
Mr. Fisher: All right, let’s read on.
“I originally began using
Junior Great Books to provide
my students with enriching,
well-written text to analyze
and discuss. Little did I know
it would change my own
thoughts on reading as an
adult, evoke emotions in me,
and bring me to tears as I
watched my students develop
empathy, become active listeners, and broaden
their ideas of the world around them. ”
