A message from the President of the 

Charbray Society of Australia 

Fellow Cattle Breeders 

As another year evolves, we see prices 

and weather conditions improving. Prices 

of store and fat cattle are maintaining 

record levels with the future looking just 

as bright. The season for most cattlemen 

is improving with most areas receiving 

drought breaking rain. Rain doesn’t bring 

money, but it brings hope and with hope 

comes confidence after some western 

areas being in drought for the last 3 to 

5 years. 

Charbrays are a breed that continues 

to evolve with positive results constantly 

being maintained at fat cattle shows/ 

sales, carcass competitions and in the 

stud arena. Charbrays are in demand 

as they prove their versatility to suit any 

market whether its weaners, steers or 

bullocks. Buyers are sourcing Charbray 

cattle for feedlots, backgrounders and 

live exporters, every week we see across 

the results Charbrays are gaining top 

price. 

This year our Society has lost two of their 

esteemed Life Members; Mr EGG Kirk 

(Ted) AFSM.OAM and Mrs. Jill Olman. 

Ted was instrumental in the formation of 

our Society and served on Council for 

many years, he was President from 1992 

to 1994. Jill’s stud Namlo Charbrays 

was held in high regard, Jill served on 

our Management Council from 1999 to 

2011. Jill was a straight shooting person, 

who had the respect of Councillors and 

members. 

I would like to welcome all vendors past 

and present who are supporting our 

National Sale. Our sales are becoming 

more solid every year with our genetics 

being highly sought after by commercial 

and stud cattleman. With the breeding 

plan our Society has implemented, 

the cattleperson can buy with great 

confidence knowing their purchase will 

be what they are looking for. 

All vendors selling at our National 

Sale are Certified Charbray breeders 

carrying the Society’s trademark; this 

gives another layer to our purchasers 

buying confidence. With the quality of 

bulls ever improving at our National Sale, 

more studs are vying to buy these highly 

sought after genetics which culminates 

in a successful sale for vendors and our 

Society as a whole.

The Momentum Continues to Build 

With an increased number of bulls 

catalogued, our 39th annual sale provides 

stud and commercial producers alike the 

opportunity to enhance and expand their 

genetic base through the superior offering 

of 114 bulls and 12 females. Presented 

by 23 certified Charbray breeders, buyers 

can invest with confidence knowing their 

purchase has been bred to selected criteria 

with the focus on creating an article to 

service all markets. 

Confidence in the Charbray breed continues 

to gain momentum, with the success of the 

recent Inaugural Charbray and Charbray 

Infused Show and Sale in Monto providing 

strong testimony to the breed’s popularity, 

marketability and ongoing capacity to 

command premiums. As Charbray Society of 

Australia President Les Marshall explained, 

the event provided a snapshot of the right 

ingredient. 

“There are some very progressive breeders 

in that region who are putting up the right 

article. They are market focused and keen 

on breeding an article that performs across 

the board, from the paddock to the selected 

market. It was a tremendous line-up of cattle 

from weaners to bullocks –the quality was 

very superior and the Charbray Society is 

grateful to the organizers Brad and Donna 

McInally of Monto Cattle and Country for 

their generous support,” Les said. 

‘The outstanding success of the Monto 

event, combined with the current buoyant 

conditions of the cattle industry in general, 

will no doubt drive interest at our National 

Sale which is a showcase from producers 

committed to perfecting the genetic base in 

their herd. Remember, consistency is the key 

and good females are just as important as 

good bulls.”

Nowhere were the benefits from investing 

in good genetics more evident than in the 

Champion Pen of Steers at the recent Monto 

Charbray and Charbray Infused Show and 

Sale exhibited by seed stock and commercial 

producer Steve Pailthorpe, ‘Rangeview 

Charbrays’, Monto. An avid National 

Sale supporter, Steve uses a combination 

of Rangeview, Greenfields and Wiluna 

bloodlines over his commercial herd. 

“It is really important to maintain a consistent 

quality of bloodlines. We achieve this by 

supporting the local Monto All Breeds Sale 

and of course the National Sale. Choosing 

good bulls from good herds equals a 

consistent article,” explained Steve who 

is also a strong advocate of generational 

breeding. 

“We are just Charbray over Charbray over 

Charbray. If you source your bulls with 

that objective in mind, the concept of 

generational breeding is made easy. ” 

Brad McInally summed up the Monto 

Charbray and Charbray Infused Show and 

Sale as follows: “It was as good a line as you 

would find anywhere. It’s always so much 

easier to sell a line of cattle than a scattering 

of this or that. Here we had pen after pen of 

Charbray lines so buyers could fill their trucks 

with confidence.” 

So successful was the Monto event, 

organisers have decided to make it an annual 

event, with April 26, 2017 earmarked for 

the second show and sale which is open to 

anyone with an interest in Charbray cattle. 

‘Given the range of rewards and premiums 

associated with Charbray cattle, I’m sure 

National Sale supporters will take full 

advantage of the quality genetics on offer 

here at Rockhampton,” Les said.

a first cross animal. The FD depicts a foundation animal. All Sires are required to be

Locally I am known as a Rhodesian Aussie 

who once farmed in Zimbabwe where 

I had four thousand acres with three 

hundred acres of irrigation and a herd of 

300 Brahmans. The current government 

laid claim to everything that I had there. 

Despite the fact that I got Polio at the age 

of three and was left with a disabled right 

leg. I immigrated to Australia to start again 

with my family of four children, fourteen 

grandchildren and to be eleven great 

grandchildren. Australia is our home and 

a number of my children have obtained 

degrees such as Engineering, Architecture, 

Teaching and Industrial design plus others. 

I have taken up the challenge of doing 

what I enjoy and that is breeding cattle. 

Currently Brahman and Charbrays. I am 

absolutely overwhelmed with the assistance 

and support that I have received from local 

cattle breeders of both breeds. My goal

is to breed Charbrays that are plus minus 

55% Brahman and 45% Charolais. We have 

showed our cattle and have received many 

championships but currently not showing 

anymore as I broke my disabled leg in two 

places whilst in the cattle paddock last year 

in March, and that has prevented me from 

walking. By nature I am a perfectionist and 

my breeding program is enhanced with 

that attitude. I will be turning seventy six in 

eleven days’ time and that does not stop 

me operating the cattle crush etc. from 

my mobility scooter. My bulls are grown 

up in the paddock and are supplementary 

fed only to enable them to get to work 

whenever needed too, and the bar that I 

set of fertility and temperament is extremely 

high. I look forward to the results of my 

first lot of bulls being sold on the annual 

Charbray bull sale. The purchaser will be 

purchasing quality.

Having only started up my Charbray stud in 

2015, I only have a small herd of six registered 

cows and one Wellcamp bull in the paddock. 

Having said that, I am not new to the game. 

I have been attending various Charbray sales 

across Queensland with my family for 10 

years now and am familiar with a lot of the 

Charbray community. I am enthusiastic about 

the breed and excited about growing my own 

stud as well as getting the Charbray name out 

there. 

My stud is based on my parent’s (George & 

Cathy’s) property in Central Queensland and 

I am forever appreciative of all the help and 

support they offer me in growing my business 

and achieving my goals. 

This is my first year selling bulls and I am 

proud of the two I have on offer and believe 

they are a good indication of the cattle I am 

trying to breed and bulls I would look to buy 

in the future. Both are by Wellcamp D054 and 

are out of feminine yet strong Charbray cows I 

had in my existing herd. I think the bulls speak

Our stud is situated 3km east of Bluff and 

180km west of Rockhampton fronting the 

Capricorn Highway. 

2015 was one of our driest years ever 

recorded until November when we received 

an early break in the season ahead of most 

producers. With this in mind Cathy and 

myself were amazed and very pleased with 

how our Charbrays handled the dry and 

tough conditions. They have come through 

raising a calf and conceiving again, which 

proves fertility along with great maternal 

attributes for all conditions. 

When selecting our own sires we seek good 

temperament, structural correctness, weight 

for age, survivability, fertility, masculinity 

and lower birth weight. (Has to be near 

perfect). Bearing all this in mind buyers 

can select a Braylyn Sire with the greatest 

of confidence that he will carry these traits 

on to his progeny. The earlier we turn our 

cattle off the quicker we get a return on our 

investment in our sire selection. 

Not to mention the great females we can 

retain for the betterment of our own herds. 

Buyers please take note, our 2 sale bulls 

this year are by Greenfields Gill. Both bulls 

are honey in colour and display all of the 

above criteria. We would not be afraid to 

use both bulls in our own herd as we think a 

lot of them. 

Next year our sale team will contain 

genetics from Cordelia Elvis, Emjay 2957 

and Huntington Hale. 

We are very pleased with how these calves 

are shaping up already. The present and 

future look exciting at Rockview if all the 

planets stay aligned like they are at the 

moment with the beautiful rain and cattle 

prices stay where they are now for a few 

more years.

Colinta Holdings, a Glencore Coal subsidiary, 

has been breeding Charbray bulls for its 

geographically diverse breeder herd since 

1990 when the principal breed requirement 

was survival, with the bulk of the females 

located in the harsh Northern Territory and 

Queensland Gulf regions. 

Charbray cattle proved adaptive and well 

able to handle the conditions. We have been 

fine- tuning the performance aspects over 

the past 25 years with herds now ranging 

from the Gulf of Carpentaria in the Northern 

Territory to Mudgee in NSW. 

We maintain purebred Charolais and 

Brahman herds to allow manipulation of 

content, and to provide new blood-lines into 

the genetic makeup of the herd through an 

upgrading program starting from a Charolais 

X Brahman joining, with all crosses within the 

Society’s parameters, however, our preferred 

content is 5/8 Charolais 3/8 Brahman and

What a year it has been here at Geneva 

Charbrays. With a very big focus on having 

a strong cow line this last year has seen us 

source in some tremendous new bloodlines 

with many thanks to NCC Brahmans, 

Brahrock Brahmans, Barambah Brahmans, 

Ayr Charolais and Jeff Noller. We have taken 

advantage of IVF, ET and AI to ensure we 

are accessing the best genetics on offer. The 

recent increase in cattle prices has driven us 

to breed an earlier maturing animal that will 

meet all market specifications. We have taken 

this into consideration when selecting our 

females and sires. Females that can withstand 

the inconsistent seasons have been another 

major focus for Geneva Charbrays. Our main 

core herd of stud cows has had very little 

feed through the dry months and have had to 

produce a calf every year. 

This year’s line up of bulls is one we think a lot 

of. With a strong push toward poll animals we 

have ensured we try and infuse some poll into 

the herd without sacrificing on quality and are 

very proud of the poll bulls we present at the 

sale. With a very light sale preparation we are 

confident the bulls will go straight to work and 

perform well. 

Overall we believe they are a strong 

representation of the Charbray breed. All 

bulls are early maturing animals that have 

exceptional temperaments and great growth 

for age. We believe that will do a great job for 

stud masters and commercial breeders.

With another 6 bulls on offer this year, 

the Marlegoo team in 2016 includes a

Two stud sires are responsible for this 

years line up, and were also represented by 

progeny in the 2105 sale team. Marlegoo

Genetics is a funny thing, but it’s certainly 

not a laughing matter. When you get it 

wrong, it can take years to correct. When 

you get it right, it can be the difference 

between financial success and failure. 

After years of sacrifice we believe we are 

finally on the path to right. 

We have taken lots of time to get our 

females, the base of any herd, right with 

length, thickness and milking capacity. 

They are now fully functioning calf factories 

with many producing at or better than 12 

monthly intervals. 

Whilst we have always used Charbray 

sires, it has at times been a little hit and 

miss. Last years’ purchase of Marlegoo 

Jaguar (pictured) will, we believe, maintain 

that required consistency in type and 

temperament in our cattle and his first drop 

of calves has certainly borne this out. They 

are ‘mini me’ with strong heads, good bone

TERMS & CONDITIONS OF SALE 

GST CLAUSE: The auction shall be conducted on the basis that the bid price shall be exclusive 

of GST. GST shall be added after the fall of the hammer for those sales subject to GST. 

All bids shall be treated as offers made upon the following Terms and Conditions of Sale and all 

persons present are admitted to attend the sale on the basis that they have notice of these Terms 

and Conditions. 

1. The highest bidder shall, subject to Condition 2, be the purchaser provided that the 

vendor reserves the right to bid either by himself or through his agent or auctioneer and should 

any dispute arise among the bidders for any lot, during or immediately after sale of the lot, it shall 

be settled at the auctioneers absolute discretion who may, should one of the disputants advance, 

put the lot or lots up again. The bidding from time to time shall be regulated by the auctioneer and 

no bid shall be retracted. 

2. The sale will be conducted on a “No Reserve” basis. 

3. The details of the purchaser, the purchase price and the lot sold as recorded by the sale 

clerk for and on behalf of the auctioneer shall be equally binding on both purchaser and vendor. 

4. The auctioneer expressly reserves the right, without giving any reason therefore, to:- 

(a) Refuse to acknowledge any bid; 

(b) Withdraw any lot or lots before or during the sale; 

(c) Exclude any person from the acution should it think fit. 

5. Each lot in all cases shall be at the risk and expense of the purchaser. 

6. Except as expressly provided in these Terms and Conditions of Sale to guarantee or 

warranty shall be given in respect of any lots sold under these Conditions as to pedigree, sex, 

age, breeding condition or otherwise howsoever, and no guarantee, warranty or condition 

whatsoever shall be implied from any affirmation made before or at the time of the sale, or from 

any circumstances of the sale, but in all cases where a guarantee is intended the same shall 

attach and be enforceable only if reduced to writing before delivery of the lot and signed by the 

vendor or by the auctioneer acting as agent for the vendor, and the absence of such writing shall 

be conclusive evidence in case of dispute that no guarantee warranty or condition whatsoever 

was given or implied. 

7. In the event of any dispute in respect to the sale of any lot: 

(i) The purchaser shall nevertheless be obliged to pay to the auctioneer the full 

purchase price and any other moneys or interest payable by the 

purchaser in accordance with these terms and conditions. 

(ii) The vendor and the purchaser shall resolve the dispute between themselves: 

(iii) The auctioneer shall have no liability or responsibility in regard to the dispute; and 

(iv) No lot shall be returned to the auctioneer and the purchaser shall 

indemnify the auctioneer for all costs, expenses and damages which the auctioneer is 

put to or incurs by reason of the purchaser so doing.

8. The name of the vendor for whom the auctioneer acts is acknowledge to have been 

furnished to purchasers prior to sale and further particulars will in all cases be furnished to a 

purchaser if required. In the case of any dispute the remedy of the purchaser shall be against 

the vendor only and in no case or under any circumstances against the auctioneer who is to be 

regarded for all intents and purposes as agent for a disclosed principal. 

9. (a) PAYMENT – Unless prior credit arrangement have been made in writing with the 

auctioneer the full purchase price for each lot shall be due and payable to the auctioneer in cash 

upon acceptance of the higest bid or the higest bidder’s offer by the vendor and prior to delivery. 

Notwithstanding that delivery is given to or possession obtained by the purchaser or his 

representative prior to the payment of the purchase money in full the property in any lot which 

is sold shall not pass to the purchaser until the full purchase price and all cheques, promissory 

notes, bills of exchange, acceptance orders of drafts given in connection with such payment 

have been paid and liquidated, and until property shall pass, the purchaser shall hold such lots as 

bailee, provided that in all cases should such payment not have been made and liquidated within 

14 days of the date of the sale the auctioneer reserves the right to:- 

(i) Rescind the contract on behalf of the vendor and repossess and resell any lots. 

(ii) Recover from the purchaser interest upon the purchase price at a rate per annum 

which aggregates the 90 day Bill Rate plus two percent. For the purposes of this 

condition “the 90 day Bill Rate” is the rate published regularly in the Australian Financial 

Review, expressed as a percentage per annum. If at any time the Financial Review 

ceases to publish a 90 day Bill Rate, the auctioneer shall determine and advise the 

purchaser of the interest rate to apply for the purpose of this condition. 

The auctioneer is selling as the del credere agent of the vendor and the 

(b) Full purchase price of any lot sold shall be payable by the purchaser to the 

auctioneer and be fully recoverable by the auctioneer in its own name. 

10. If the purchaser shall neglect or fail to comply with any of the within conditions, any lot 

purchased by him may be immediately resold by public auction or private contract, with or without 

notice, at the risk of the former purchaser, who will be held responsible for all loss and expenses 

arising out of such resale, and shall not participat in any profit accuring therefrom 

11. Any vendor or purchaser removing the sale number from any lot after it has been sold 

will fully indemnify all affected parties for any loss, costs or damage should the lot be wrongly 

delivered. 

12. The purchasers, if more than one, shall be jointly and severally bound by these Terms 

and Conditions, and shall jointly and severally carry out and perform same. 

13. Any person who advances a bid on a lot shall do so on the expressed condition and 

understanding that should that person’s bid be the higest bid , then that person will be held 

personally liable for the price so agreed upon, regardless of the fact that that person may be 

acting on behalf of another party, either disclosed or undisclosed to the vendor or the auctioneer, 

provided however, that this condition shall not in any way negate the vendor’s right to claim 

against any principle and in such case the bidders’ liability shall be construed to be by way of 

guarantee. 

14. The auctioneer may should it think fit, make arrangements on a purchaser’s behalf for 

the feeding, watering, trucking, shipping of and general attendance to any lot after sale but no 

responsibility will be accepted by the auctioneer and all such services shall be at the purchaser’s 

risk and expence.

15. No lot will be delivered until the sales invoice has been checked and signed by the 

purchaser or his duly authorised representative. 

16. (a) Each lot in all cases shall be sold with all faults, if any, and excepting those conditions 

and warranties implied by the trade Practices Act or any applicable State legislation which cannot be 

contractually excluded and excepting conditions and warranties expressly contained in these Terms 

and Conditions of Sale, any express or implied condition, statement or warranty, statutory or otherwise, 

is hereby excluded. The auctioneer is not liable in respect of any error, misdescription or omission in 

any particulars appearing or stated regarding the descriptions or pedigrees of any lot offered for sale 

and no such error, misdescription or omission shall entitle the purchaser to annul the sale or reject the 

lot or claim any compensation, damage or abatement in price. 

(b) Each lot will be sold subject to passing all veterinary tests required by the law of the State 

or country to which the purchaser intends to transport that particular lot, such tests to be undertaken 

at the purchaser’s expense and concluded immediately following the sale. In the event of a lot failing to 

pass these tests, the sale shall be null and void, any purchase moneys paid by the purchaser shall be 

refunded and property in the lot shall revert to or remain with the vendor. 

17. GUARANTEES OF FERTILITY:- 

17.1 BULLS. Save and except for calves at foot, all bulls are guaranteed breeders and to so prove 

within 6 months of the date of sale or by reaching the age of 24 months whichever date be the later. 

17.2 FEMALES. Save and except for female calves at foot, all females are guaranteed to be 

in calf or go into calf within six months of the date of sale or by the age of 30 months whichever 

date shall be the later. A positive pregnancy testes certified by a qualified vetinarian surgeon shall be 

suffecient evidence that the animals is in calf. 

17.3 Claims under Clauses 17.1 and 17.2 guarantees of fertility shall be made to the vendor 

within six months from the date of sale or prior to the animal entering a quarrentine area other 

than on the vendor’s property. 

17.3.1 All claims must be accompanied by a vetinary certificate issued by a registered 

veterinarian in accordance with the guidelines established by the Aust Association of Cattle 

Veterinarians which shall clearly identify the basis of the claim. 

17.3.2 Infertility resulting from injury or disease occurring after the sale shall not be covered by this 

guarantee. 

17.3.3 The vendor retains the right to have the animal placed on a property nominated by him or 

returned to his own property for further assessment of fertility for a period not exceeding six months. In 

the vent of the animal being proven fertile within the period such status shall be confirmed by a certificate 

issued by a registered veterinarian in accordance with the guidelines established by the Australian 

Association of Cattle Veterinarians and costs incurred shall be borne by the purchaser. In the event of the 

animal not being proven fertile within the period the costs incurred shall be borne by the vendor. 

in the conditions of sale, the liability of a vendor in respect of claims relating to fertility shall not 

exceed the purchase price of the animal(s) or to provide mutually agreed upon replacement animals. 

17.5 REFUNDS. In the event of a claim being substantiated and the purchase price being 

refunded, the animal/s shall automatically become the property of the vendor and be returned to 

him or disposed of according to his instructions at his expense. 

17.6 This guarantee shall be voided by the purchaser if:- 

(i) In poor physical condition or with any injury; 

(ii) Tests carried out on behalf of the vendor within fourteen days of such return proved 

positive to any diseases which may affect the animals fertility or ability to breed 

naturally; or 

(iii) The purchaser has collected and stored semen from a bull or embryos from a 

female.

17.7 Dispute shall be resolved by the vendor and the purchaser and the auctioneer, while 

he will use his best endeavours to assist, shall have no liability or responsibility in that 

regard. In the event that a lot is alleged or proved not to be a breeder, the purchaser shall 

nevertheless be obliged to pay the auctioneer the full purchase price and any other monies or 

interest payable by the purchaser in accordance with these Terms and Conditions. 

18 (a) Each lot shall be at the risk of the vendor in respect of any damage or injury, 

whether by disease, accident or otherwise, for the period that the lot be in the custody of the 

auctioneer, PROVIDED THAT the auctioneer, its servants, agents and employees shall use all 

reasonable care to protect and control the lot while it is in the auctioneer’s custody AND 

PROVIDED THAT when a lot has been sold, it shall be at the risk of the purchaser in all 

respects. 

(b) If any vendor brings to the sale premises any lot which is dangerous, or 

infected with any disease, that vendor shall be liable for an injury, damages, costs, losses or 

expenses which the auctioneer may sustain, incur or be put to either directly or indirectly as a 

result of the vendor so doing. The auctioneer reserves the right, at its absolute discretion, to 

exclude from the sale, or put out of the sale venue or dispose of, any lot which in its opinion 

shows signs of any disease, whether infectious, contagious or not, or of any serious fault or of 

being dangerous. 

19. DELIVERY – Except at the discretion of the auctioneer no lot shall be delivered to the 

purchaser unless payment of the purchase money together with any additional charges 

incurred including those expenses incurred by the auctioneer pursuant to Condition 14 

hereof, is first made by the purchase to the auctioneer. Release of lots may be withheld by the 

auctioneer until personal cheques are cleared. 

20. In these Conditions:- 

(a) References to “Auctioneer” shall be taken to mean as the context so admits, the 

selling agent or any member, subsidiary or related corporation or body, officer, agent 

or employee thereof, autherised by the vendor to conduct the sale of the lot; 

(b) “Purchaser” shall have the meaning ascribed to it in Condition 1; 

(c) “Vendor” shall mean the person or corporation upon whose account lots are 

offered for sale and where a stud or farm is named shall mean the proprietor of that 

stud or farm; 

(d) “Lot” shall be taken to mean the animal offered for sale and/or sold by the 

auctioneer on behalf of a vendor.

provide all information without responsibility and give no guarantee whatsoever as to its
